btw, as someone who doesn't even drive in real life and knows NOTHING about cars, and is playing my first racing game since I dabbled for a few hours in Forza 2 because it came free with my 360, should I just completely ignore car tuning, or are there any guides that can talk to me like I'm 5 years old?
I did a few races and opened up a second location so I just got the car buying, in game auction thing, and online play activated before I shut down for the night.
The game gave me a welcome basket of pickup trucks and an Audi and some other random stuff. Bought a Ford Focus RS and upgraded my starter Mustang GT 350R to 899.
I drove a big loop up that western road around to the north and then back east to the big city. So far I am charmed.

You can do just fine ignoring the tuning, really. It's there for the gearheads, but not essential at all if you're just playing casual.

Tuning is an important thing in the Forza Motorsports series because it is more of a sim. Horizon is quite arcade-y so you don't have to worry about tuning.
The general rules for upgrading are also different. In the motorsports series you definitely need to throw PI into upgraded tires and tire width because handling is more important. At least for me, I mostly ignore the tires and just throw ridiculous amounts of PI at power.

I think pretty much the only thing you need to worry about with tuning is if you install a race transmission, it's a good idea to go into the tuning and set the final drive so that all your gears show up on the graph. That'll get you like 80% of the way there to a good gear tune which is good enough for 99% of the time. For most cars it seems the default setting usually ends up too far on the acceleration side and the car can only make use of like 3 or 4 gears. Mostly everything else is like they've said above pretty fine-tuney and sticking with the defaults is completely fine.
Less important but still kind of ballsed up by default is the differential settings... pretty much everything on that screen is way too high by default except for the ratio of front to back on AWD cars.

i've played every forza game in history and still just ignore the tuning and just use auto upgrade. i'm in it for the fun, not the grodnardy gearness! lol
Just picked up an Xbone and Forza Horizon 3 thanks to Target's buy a console get a game promotion. So looking forward to it.

I feel like the steering in FH3 is way more wobbly and loose than FH2 or FM6. Seems like the game isn't helping you get the car straight on normal nearly as much as it has done in every other version of Forza ever. I haven't been playing the game much because of this.
What goes into programming your Drivatar? Is it just how you perform in races, or is your general dicking around driving between events also factored in?

Also in this category, the XP boost some HE cars have (like the BRZ) applies to the XP you get in each event of an online adventure, XP being how it determines who wins at the end. So if someone brings one they can't lose unless they're a total drongo.
IDK if anyone else tried putting something inappropriate on their license plate, but the voice line admonishment it gives you is pretty good. Worth listening to once. Though I did have an "OMFG" license plate in real life a dozen years ago, so I feel like it should let me...
A fun thing about doing other people's Bucket Lists (as long as they're not sadists, ebo) is you get to see what they put on their license plate since you're driving their car. I drove your car through Byron Bay with Lets Fly on the plate. I really need to come up with something better than my name for mine...
My Reliant Supervan bucket list challenge is completely doable!
Also, I posted this on my activity feed, but for those of you who aren't my friend on Xbox Live, Do a Barrel Roll!:

Emphasis mine. You may want to have a few cars for each class. Speed and handling both for track and rally. Though handling is less important for rally, gotta get those skill points!
Another thing is the core Forza group has been playing multiplayer mostly on Tuesday and Thursday nights around 8:30PM Eastern for years now. Depending on new demand, we may want to reevaluate what days we want to race.
I'm a bit on the fence about buying this for PC and have a couple of questions.
First, realizing that this is arcadey, wonder if it's arcadey like NFS is on the PC? I don't mind an arcade racer, but if I'm going to bust out my G27, I want some decent feel from the game, unlike say NFS which your steering wheel may as well be a gamepad. Thoughts on how realistic this feels with a wheel from anyone? None of the reviews I've seen so far have touched on steering wheel feel. Note, that I like the feel of PCars better than Assetto, even though AC is probably a more realistic game. And, I like both of those better than the last version of iRacing I tried (a couple years ago).
Second, I'm running an over clocked 2500k, over clocked R9 280, with 8 gigs of RAM. I know I barely hit the minimum (really close if not), but most games run really well on medium for me. Thinking that this would be a low at 1080p. How bad does low quality look?

On the first point, I think @GnomeTank has some experience running a wheel in the game. The short of it was that you may as well use a gamepad.
As for the performance...I'd suggest taking a gander at the Digital Foundry video I posted on the last page. They do comparisons between the different graphics settings.

@badpoet May as well use a gamepad is spot on. I love my Fanatec but it's just sitting there until they make a major patch (if they do), because there is no feedback or feel. That said even though I'm a cockpit-view steering wheel set-phasers-to-realism type I'm having a blast running around with my 360 controller in 3rd person view. I think this is the first game I've played something other than cockpit/hood/bumper cam. It isn't super corny like the last few NFS games I played, the underpinnings are there... they just didn't do steering wheel support, basically.
When it first launched I had my old GTX 750 and running it on medium it was a little underwhelming but I was also having framerate issues. I'd wait for the demo they say will come for PC sometime and see what you think then.

I find a wheel incredibly floaty in this game, and no amount of tweaking the settings has stiffened it up for me yet. I'm using a Thrustmaster TX base with T3PA Pro pedals.
It's playable, but if you're used to playing driving games more to the realistic end of the spectrum, it's not going to feel great. At least it doesn't for me, obviously everyone has their own preference. The way I described it before is that it feels like driving a car with no front grip all the time in the way the wheel feels.
I've been running on Low on my laptop, and I'm still having a ton of fun.

yep, I believe the thinger is -PA-, I have no idea if clubs are a thing you can search for, but if there's no way to search then (and not to throw anyone under the bus or anything) but I think adding eclibull as a friend and asking for an invite would probably be the fastest way.

I heard you need to be a certain level to join clubs on the Giant Bombcast.
What I'm wondering now is how long it takes Gamertag Changes to take effect. As part of selling my 360 to my ex-girlfriend when we broke up so I could buy a PS4, I let her keep the account on it and all the games associated, so when I booted up FH3 I was logged in as "PA Virtual On", the gamertag I set up to organize people who played the XBLA version of Virtual On.
Last night I paid $10 to change it to "PA Raiden333" and it's still not changed.

Oh good, so it's not just me. I tried a demo at X16 and that wheel and I just did NOT get along. I only got to try it with one of the dune buggies, though, but it was like it would just not stop spinning in place.
Driving one in the final game, I thought maybe it was just me or the vehicle type.
And all challenges. I don't really know how to get skill points exactly, like for the construction site bucket list challenge
Easiest way is to bunny hop off the gravel mounds, then drift into a bush to get that 1000 pt sideswipe or landscaping bonus, turn around and do it again.
Also the score you're getting doesn't multiply until you've safely let the skill point build up "time out". So if you have like a 10,000 score with a 3.2 multiplyer or something, when you let it time out and cash in it works out to like 30,000. For a while I didn't realise that the score wasn't already a multiple. But yeah I figured it out. Basically press a to wiggle and drift everywhere, smash into stuff, jump off stuff, and try not to come to a dead stop by crashing into something solid, which means you get nothing. I mean I should've realised this already but never paid attention to the different text animations for a successful or a failed skill multiplier until I did the specific challenges
So, I had the weekend off from work, racing and other obligations and played a bunch of the preview, but now that the game has actually launched, I've barely had time to play it

yeah I think it's one of those systems where it's incredibly obvious to the people who already know it to the point that it doesn't even register as a thing to explain to someone who doesn't already know it.
Speaking of not intuitive, let me take a stab at explaining the in-game Club/Guild system, since people were asking.
We have a club up, [-PA-], Penny Arcadian Racing. It's set to be Open To Friends, which either means you can freely join as long as the leader (me, Eclibull) or the Co-Leader (still working that out) have you on their friends list OR anyone in the club has you on their friends list. I have no idea which of those are true, but it's one of them.
When You Can Join: After you unlock your third festival site (the choice between the Valley and whatever you didn't choose for your second site) and gain enough fans to apply the next Upgrade, the Club tab on your pause menu will unlock. Through this, you should have a "Join A Friend's Club" option, which should give us as an option. No level requirement as far as I know.
When You Can Be Invited: If you don't want to wait for that point, you can be invited by the Club leadership at any time, though you will only be able to access this invite after opening your second festival site (the Outback or Surfer's Paradise choice) when the Social Tab unlocks and you can access Messages. For this, just send me a message on the forums or through Xbox Live (Eclibull) and, assuming the Club servers are working at the time, I will get an invite to you ASAP.
This, of course, has nothing to do with the larger Xbox Live Club system currently in Preview, which just makes all the wording for this more confusing.

Uh, I recall unlocking online well before the 3rd festival site ... Pretty sure it happened when I got the first upgrade after unlocking a second site.
Otherwise, I have a worse problem than Knight with driving cars. All I ever want to drive in Horizon is a Renault Alpine.
... But at least we're having good adventures and I'm loving the photo mode again?

The Social Tab is what they call Online, and yeah, that pops after you first unlock Surfer's or the Outback. The Club tab, unless you get invited first, is what doesn't unlock until the third. Hence not intuitive.

Like Mega Man Legends? Then check out my story, Legends of the Halcyon Era - An Adventure in the World of Mega Man Legends on TMMN and AO3!
Easiest way is to bunny hop off the gravel mounds, then drift into a bush to get that 1000 pt sideswipe or landscaping bonus, turn around and do it again.

yeah I think it's one of those systems where it's incredibly obvious to the people who already know it to the point that it doesn't even register as a thing to explain to someone who doesn't already know it.
Otherwise, I have a worse problem than Knight with driving cars. All I ever want to drive in Horizon is a Renault Alpine.
... But at least we're having good adventures and I'm loving the photo mode again?
I still wish you could get these uncompressed ...
Perhaps I can interest you in my meager selection of pins?
The Social Tab is what they call Online, and yeah, that pops after you first unlock Surfer's or the Outback. The Club tab, unless you get invited first, is what doesn't unlock until the third. Hence not intuitive.
