Is it worth playing on survival difficulty if I plan to play on very hard or whatever? I'm not sure how the difficulty works, this is for my second play through. I mainly want to up the difficulty to increase legendary spawns, and if survival difficulty doesn't effect legendary spawns or loot rates I'm not gonna bother
Man it sure is fun when your settlement takes like a month of in game time to go from 80 to 90, then just randomly decides to drop back in like a day, for no discernible reason
Oberland station is such a shockingly terrible settlement location I hate it with every fiber of my being. Fucking Preston sent me to it on a "Clearing the Way" mission so instead of talking to the settlers I murdered them, then wiped the settlement out of existence by using the "scrapall" command in the console. Just a workshop bench and bare earth now.
Looking forward to Preston's reaction to this one.

Gah this games atmosphere is so great sometimes. Anybody been to the retirement home?
i speech check and the robots let me in and give me a room. I'm looking around, find all the usual sad and creepy stuff, skeletons still in wheel chairs, trapped under bookshelves. Then when I'm on the second floor I suddenly hear one of the mr handys shout out "Oh fantastic more guests have arrived!" I'm momentarily confused, then I hear synths reply "eliminate" and they're pouring into the lobby, opening fire on the cheerful mr handys and slaughtering them.
So damn brilliant and engaging. Also all the unique stuff in each room, like the elderly sea captain with all model ships, and the old military dude who was ironing his fatigues. The environmental stories are top notch
I also love the companion dialogue that's frequently unique to the setting. Macready said "I wonder if these poor folks died of old age or when the rads hit"
Sided with the Institute, killed the Railroad and blew up the Prydwyn or whatever it's called. Unfortunately, I never got to loot Elder Maxson. He was standing on a building when I killed him, and before I could find his corpse the synth finished triggering Liberty Prime and I got teleported away.
I'm looking through the wreckage and not seeing his corpse. I really wanted that gatling laser of his but I can't find it!

Except, unfortunately, if you advance far enough in the game....
All synths become friendly to you. It's like the main plot actually BREAKS some of the sequences they wrote for the wasteland.
Also
WHY THE HELL WERE THE SYNTHS INVADING THE RETIREMENT HOME?
My issue with Oberland Station was that it's boring and it has a dilapidated building in the middle that you can't do anything about.
Building a concrete wall around it and building a single skyscraper ringed in missile turrets worked pretty well but like I said, boring
I am addicted to the power of the scrap everything mod.
That stupid waste of space tower that manages to take up half the place while providing no actual living space? Completely and utterly gone.
Sunshine Tidings Co-op got similarly leveled with the scrapall command. The collection of impossible to defend ramshackle buildings was replaced by a single large square compound that houses an indoor garden.
-edit-
You do have to be careful, as injudicious use of scrap everything combined with scrapall in the console can leave your settlements devoid of character. For example, I left the big screen and projector buildings at the drive-in alone, because otherwise it just isn't the drive in. That means no "scrapall" command, I had to run around manually scrapping all the garbage which takes a long time.
But certain settlements are so poorly laid out and miserable to try to defend that they really deserve to be turbonuked.

Doesn't work for oberland.
It does if you use the console commands I posted earlier you can. Same for Tenpines Bluff, another settlement that is possibly better off being abandoned entirely.
Also works for Abernathy, which some people dislike as well. Though personally I'm fine with it, it has a huge build area. The downhill slope makes building an extensive wall around it annoying, but not impossible. You can grow asstons of adhesive crops there, or turn it into a major scavenging farm.
Yeah, the Abernathy build area is nice and big so it at least gives you some room to play around. Like so:
Sadly, the AI are too stupid to use the bridges so they just warp to the ground. I even put a bed right next to the guard post but he still teleports away.

Abernathy quietly became one of my biggest settlements. I don't know how, I neglected the hell out of it, and then there were just 20 people hanging out. I guess they really like tatos.
Huh, I've never managed to get those bridges to work for me. They always show up red regardless of placement. It doesn't help that the camera view doesn't allow you to see the whole thing. I have the same issue with those large military structures. Can't see the ends, always red. Can't even drop it somewhere and then move it into place with modpos.
So how do the junkyard gates work in your settlements? Can traders get through and enemies can't? Or will it block traders? Or can just anyone or anything open it?

They need solid ground for the entire length to be placed. I used a bunch of shack flooring along the desired path to allow placement and then removed them after. The camera view is definitely annoying but once you get it placed initially it becomes much easier to tweak.

Walls with a few gates at the points where provisoners and traders enter your settlements are incredibly effective during settlement defense. Enemies typically spawn outside your walls and this forces them to circle looking for a way in, all the while they are being shot up by your turrets. Generally a settlement where I have built walls sees raiders dead before they ever manage to get in through a gate.

The fact that every single settler will run outside the gate to fight the raiders before they even get halfway around doesn't help much though. This is the main reason I disabled settlement attacks entirely. Group combat AI in this game is garbage.

I have to give credit to the raider group that brought rocket launchers and a guy in raider power armor to assault one of my settlements. They died horribly to the turret towers. but they still managed to knock a few out of commission. I can now imagine a similar group being the reason for the failed defense notices whenever I don't show up in time. Thank you dead well equipped raiders.

It is so easy to get lost (not map lost) in this game. I rolled up a PER/AGI build for sniping and it certainly makes everything feel different. Once I got a scoped rifle I
took down the power plant for Tenpines. Clearing the outside was insanely easier by shooting raiders from farther away than they could even see me. Also using a 'bug' to dispatch many of the interior guys (aggro, load back into wasteland, everyone who was shooting at you loads outside with you, molotov, $$$).
I also found a bunch of new areas just wandering around. Found a pond with some raiders in the sewers, found Big Jim (wrench with chance to cripple legs).
Killed a Yao Guai. Approached Diamond City from the West and ended up killing a few super mutants and a legendary Mr Handy.
I actually killed a few legendaries last night and got mostly mediocre gear. Got a pipe pistol with no ammo limit, an arm that you take 15% less damage when standing and not moving, a leg piece that increases the sweet spot on lockpicking (very keeping).
Anyways...much wandering, got murdered by Swan once trying to find the Railroad.
Fun times.

They are, but it's messy and annoying to have to deal with. I built this fancy defensive wall and automated system to deal with attackers, then they garbage it all up by just rushing outside and shooting their little shit pipe guns at point blank range.
At least with attacks disabled I can still build the defenses and have everything look nice but avoid the unpleasantness of the actual bad implementation of these mechanics.
At this point, I'm at least 80% certain that the GECK release is waiting on Bethesda's latest brilliant scheme to monetize other people donating unpaid labor to fix their broken game.
I'm 80% certain that the GECK release is waiting on the usual bugfixing and tweaking and whateverthefuck Bethsoft does between the game's release and the release of the mod tools.
It took two months from Fallout 3's release for the GECK to hit, and three for Skyrim's.
FO4's will hit before too long.
