Give your settlers better guns! Mine annihilated their attackers thanks to laser rifles and 308 combat rifles

I don't really care enough about settlers to go around finding nice guns for them. However, whenever there is an invasion, I do make sure to pick up all the guns from the attackers and distribute them. So at least if they get attacked twice my settlers will be properly armed.

I view my settlers as something to sponge bullets while my turrets do their job.

It took two months from Fallout 3's release for the GECK to hit, and three for Skyrim's.

FO4's will hit before too long.

I suppose I just don't quite believe that Bethesda has accepted that they can't get free money for other people's work, without putting in any more effort or oversight of their own (to curate, support, etc). It's just too alluring (also completely wrong, but).

they just get the free money up front by making their games even buggier/less feature filled and telling the community to fix it.

Yeah, they could make the buggiest game ever, but as long as there's a decent game under the bugs the community will always save their ass.

I don't think this means they're lazy or resting on their laurels or whatever so much as they call the game finished 6 months to a year before it probably should have been.

Yes, but under the plan they tried to sell us with Skyrim, they get to charge for the unfinished game and take a cut off the top for other people's attempts to fix it! They're getting paid twice!

    odd

iirc once you use it you can't even cancel out before picking something. I remember restarting at one point because of that because I wasn't sure which one I wanted to use it on and picking the wrong one.

More than likely after picking it up you hit another key and selected a point of strength (top of the list unless you already have 10 strength) instantly before the pop-up window even showed. I have definitely had that happen before.

Item duplication with Dogmeat isn't that hard. The hard part is not abusing it *too* much.

    lol.

I started giving myself local leader for free as soon as I discovered the "scrapall" command.

I'm not going to forego the use of an enormously timesaving thing like that because someone at Bethesda thought that the ability to temporarily store crafting stations should be gated behind level 20, two perks, and a minimum charisma score.

    efffffff that

(I don't start building actual shops until later in the game anyway, way past level 20 before I even start to think about it)

For what it's worth, I have manually hunted through Sanctuary and manually scrapped all the shit at least 3 times now. I feel like I've spent enough hours of my life doing that.

Now when I start a new game I have "scrap everything" mod disabled, and I use the scrapall command at Sanctuary and Red Rocket, then I savequit and re-enable "scrap everything".

But I don't care to lose my crafting stations doing that, and for some reason you need local leader rank 2 just to store crafting stations, not just fabricate brand new ones. That's dumb so I ignore it. Cheating has no relevance to me in a Bethesda game. I play how I will, without regard to limitations the designers conceived of.

I was trying to create a minigun turret for settlement defense and it somehow ended up as the floating head. It was so broken that for combat, the head floated over and tried to punch the enemy with invisible arms.

The actual working version seems much less amusing by comparison.

I finally had some luck placing one of the huge military style fortress-walls from the homemaker mod today.

The trick was going into no-clip mode and floating pretty high up and then positioning the wall from a birds eye view. It wasn't hard to get it to pop green for me from that perspective. Once it was actually placed, I could grab it from the side edge and move it around and that is *MUCH* easier to manipulate than when you initially pull it from the menu, where you're locked into having grabbed it right in the middle and can't spin it or even see anything other than this giant (red outlined) metal thing 2 feet in front of your face.

They aren't really functionally any different than building a wall out of shack parts with some roof pieces to stick turrets on, but they look a hundred times better.

I've been having fun with console command assisted settlement building tonight.

I powered the lights in a four story structure by using power generators and conduits embedded in the concrete foundations with judicious use of the no-clip command. For the roof I brought power for lights to the upper floors without creating too much of an eyesore by using power pylons which I then shrunk down to teeny-tiny little widgets with setscale commands.

I completed the privet hedge around the back part of Sanctuary with actual privet hedge pieces, moved into position via modpos commands to create a contiguous wall of privet hedge, which does in fact make for a perfectly good wall when it isn't broken up by convenient raider access points at regular intervals.

For the part of the settlement that doesn't have much of a natural wall I used Covenant-style concrete walls, and for the sections where the wall meets one of the old houses I moved the walls into position with setpos commands, so the concrete walls are actually embedded into the pre-existing structures of the abandoned houses, which makes them part of the wall and saves concrete, without leaving a gap.

Tiny power pylons, so cute and not huge, ugly, and omnipresent.

    2016-01-14_00004.jpg

The house I built. I'm not through decorating but you get the idea. It turned out very clean and modern looking.

    2016-01-14_00005.jpg

This is that military style fortress that I managed to place for the first time tonight. I call it the great wall of fuck you.

    th_2016-01-14_00008.jpg

This is the kill zone created by the opening between the great wall of fuck you, and my residential building. Tested against a spawn of 10 alpha deathclaws. The deathclaws had an exceedingly bad last 20 seconds of life.

    th_2016-01-14_00003.jpg

Privet hedge wall. Doesn't look so great from above, and I did a nicer job with the same thing in a different settlement the other day but this works as proof of concept.

    th_2016-01-14_00007.jpg

Covenant wall embedded directly into a pre-existing house/ruin. The house has all kinds of openings that can be fired through (by me) but is impassable otherwise.

If you join the Institute and side with them you get the swanky gray colored Institute walls and such. However, the homemaker mod I'm using adds some to that, including the multilevel walls which are like a normal wall, but have an extra little bit at the top so there is no gap when creating multi story buildings. I think some of the window pieces are also added by homemaker.

A lot of the little decorating things (which you can't see especially well in those photos) are added by homemaker.

All of the wall stuff is added by mods. The military fort, the covenant style walls, and the privet hedges.

    -edit-

Also if you add a bar or restaurant shopkeeper to your settlement and some tables and chairs nearby your settlers will hang out there in the evenings instead of gathering in the middle of town to mill about staring at their feet.

I've gotten to level 23, got midway through the main quest, did a lot of minutemen stuff.

Kind of want to go back to New Vegas.

I miss the weapon variety, the characters, the aesthetic, the more interesting setting and factions.

I even found exploring the Capital Wasteland in Fallout 3 more fun than exploring the Commonwealth in Fallout 4. Everything feels so small.

Really hope Obsidian gets another swing at Fallout.

Pens and pencils aren't actually weightless, the weight is just so low that it gets rounded to zero. Folders and burnt magazines do weight 0 though, and are essentially bottlecaps (weightless, 1 cap value).

Yeah, it is simple. The timing takes a few tries to get down, but once you see it it's easy.

Set item on ground, make sure dogmeat is far enough away from the object that he has to move to pick it up, and cannot just immediately grab it from where he is standing.

You back up far enough from the item that when you activate dogmeat and then activate the item the cursor says "tell dogmeat to get it" and not overridden by your own pick-up option if you are in range.

Tell dogmeat to grab it, then move close enough to the item that you can pick it up too. Dogmeat approaches the item. Right before he picks it up he does a little thing where he kind of stops and stands. You'll know it when you see it. At that moment is when you pick up the item. If you did it correctly, dogmeat will already be picking it up too, and you will have the item in your inventory, and he'll walk over and drop the same item on the ground.

You pick it up, then drop both special books on the ground and pick them both up. One of them will give you the stat bonus.

If you wish to repeat, you drop one of the special books and go again. You only need to drop one, and it doesn't matter which one.
