I bought this the week it came out but have only got around to playing it now because reasons.
Early game spoilers.
The whole opening with Toriel is so good, holy shit. Just the way she is clearly delighted to finally have someone to talk to and care for (though I got the idea from the boarded up room that you're not the first kid she's taken care of, not sure if it's supposed to mean she's lost a child of her own or what), and her desperate attempts to keep you there when you start insisting that no, you need to go now. And that fight was one of the more stress inducing fight of any RPG I've ever played, even though you don't really do anything and she seems to be deliberately avoiding you with her attacks. It honestly reminded me of some of my arguments I've had with my mom, who, after losing her dad and brother to cancer within the past year, has become understandably clingy when it comes to family and gets very emotional over pretty much anything.
And then it goes from that tense, emotional fight to that smug asshole flower taunting you about how you won't be able to keep this up and the splash title screen and oh my gosh this game is good.
I'm a bit further along now (just finished the Papyrus fight and follow up date, which was possibly the funniest thing I've seen in a videogame since I honestly can't remember) and I love how well these dumb characters get developed through repeated actions and gags. Like, you could kind of tell what Papyrus's deal was when you first met, but then the game takes it's time to really establish that this guy is huge lonely dork and it does it in such a natural way that you never really see in game stories.
I'm also loving how combat is a puzzle to figure out the peaceful solution, and how well it uses repetition (both through repeated actions and even repeated encounters) to drive home how hard nonviolence is and how contrary it is to the common "gamer" mindset.
I'm probably going to peace out of this thread because the internet is a minefield, but damn this game is good and I wish I'd played it earlier.
please keep us posted on your progress!
we love watching/hearing about people's initial experiences with the game
This is why I'm hooked on Let's Plays of this game. You can only experience this game for the first time once, but seeing others do the same feels close.
whenever my sister watches me play a game, she says to me
'why are they always so violent'
'why is it always fighting'
today is my birthday
tomorrow please look forward to stream of My Sister Plays Undertale
We're about to start~ I'm blue_twitch
Let's see how long her patience lasts~

Fought mega flowey which was... 'interesting.' Got a hint from Flowey as to what I'd missed, which was helpful! I hadn't killed anyone, but apparently I'd missed going back and befriending Udyne (thus missing out on Alphys and the True Lab). The lab was... something, all right.
Got the 'true ending,' and bothered to walk all the way back to the beginning of the game on a whim. Poor Asriel.
Still kinda compiling my thoughts on the game, but it's a strong contender for my game of the year. Read up a bit on the 'genocide' run. It's... pretty fucked up!!

you actually can't befriend alphys until you've beaten the game. it's to be sure players see the neutral ending at least once before getting the true ending, even if they go pacifist from the start.

Oh! That's neat, thanks for pointing it out.
I do like how the game plays with videogame conventions, although the reason I came in to ask about the crash instead of restarting the game was that I'd had a few game crashes before so I was pretty confused. I also REALLY didn't want to do that Asgore fight again, because I am garbage at several of his bullet hell patterns, so I was kind of seeking reassurance that I wouldn't have to completely restart that section.
I just started the twitch. There's no way you can just rewind to the start of a twitch and catch up as it goes, is there?
ah, i don't have the past broadcasts so I'm afraid not thx for stopping by though
Ah, np.
I didn't freaking believe she'd kill Papyrus ... after he spared her. That's just harsh. And this from the woman who didn't like fighting in games?
Hahaha, seemingly no moral opposition to the violence after all, seeing it all in action just stresses her out~
I thought that whole sequence was amazing tho
"oh i can spare him....but then...he'd want to go on that date......"*moves from mercy to fight*
how was audio btw
Tangentially related to that, in Mass Effect
This is exactly why I let Kaiden die
"Oh I could save him or Ashley... Ashley's a racist and I don't like her BUT Kaiden awkwardly asked me out that one time OH GOD HE WILL BE A ROMANCE OPTION FOREVER MAYBE"

When you get an error in this game, you get a much more entertaining result.
What's the music that plays during Asgore's fight in the neutral ending? It's AWESOME. I actually ended up dying a full 17-ish times to him as I was convinced that multiple deaths was the way to get him to stop fighting. This was due to the slightly altered text every time you enter into his battle ("he nods _____"). Ended up having to look up that you have to actually attack him. It was the first attack I'd done in the game, other than the odd bomb defusing section.

"You tell Asgore he's killed you too many times to count.
He nods grievously."
In my defense, the weapon I had at the time had some weird mechanics, I had to go back and get the one in the bedroom when I finally decided dying a billion times was not the solution.

What weapon? I had on the heart locket thinking it would play into it somehow, then switched back to the dirty apron for healing power when it became clear that it didn't have any impact.
Or are ya talking about the knife thing? I never picked that up. Does it have a special effect?

Knife thing, yeah - no special effect, but just one hit reticle thingy, I was using the book before that and it had a weird two or three reticle thing I could never get to work right. The knife was simple and had enough damage for me to finish the fight in one or two gos once I picked it up.

yeah, the knife if just the best weapon at being an actual weapon, as opposed to all the ones you equip for the side effects

For the book, just treat it as three attacks, and hit each one as it passes the reticle.

Metatron spoilers:
You don't need to attack in the bomb defuse section.
In fact you don't need to do anything in the bomb defuse section.
In fact, in every Metatron section bar the final fight, you can just do nothing although it sadly doesn't seem to affect the overall Alphys story though.
it surprises me how many people don't get the knife
i mean even if youre not killing anyone might be useful
Hell, the description says it's good for cutting vines. Like if you've made it that far and aren't suspicious of Flowey coming back for round two? Dang pick up that knife kid.
Yes but you must both hit and have the bomb in the defusal zone.
... although hitting doesn't necessarily mean center of the screen as I was thinking when I messed with this.
Two semi thoughtful posts and then right into spider fucking should put me on par with most Undertale fans, right?

But doesn't the ACT command defuse the bomb without needing to fight it? Why would someone fight it, especially when Aplhys tells you about the ACT commmand?

Does anyone else choke up just hearing that song? (TBH, I actually straight up started crying). Is there something wrong with me (I mean more than usually)?
I mean yeah, but it also played when I was driving home from the funeral of my friend's mother so it'll forever be associated with that.
To be honest, I'm well aware that I have some emotional problems (that I'm working on) but I was REALLY astonished how close to home (ie. those problems) Undertale hit. This used to happen during movie endings at times but would subside after an hour or so. For Undertale it looks like it's gonna be weeks until I shake off.
This fucking game, man.

@BlueBlue, make sure your sister knows that resetting is an option. Like, don't pressure her to use it, just let her know she can.
