@Invictus what event was last night that you were talking about on vent? i'd like to try and find the recording of it and see at least the finals. i've been slowly transitioning into just watching everything after the fact for a lot of games. real life (and the NFL) are making it awkward to try and watch streams.

It's called King in the North season 3. The VODs for the whole tournament are here; unfortunately they dont' have them separated out so you'll just have to search through the big VOD. If the finals are all you care about, they start at 7:04:30. It starts with game 2, but that's because one player starts with a one-game advantage because the tournament is double elimination and they came out of the winner's bracket.

that's interesting. why didn't they just do the standard bracket reset format for double-elim? as in play best-of-X and if the loser bracket finalist wins then you do another best-of-X

When people have done this in the past, it's usually been for time reasons where there are worries about the venue closing. In this case, it was in a theater where the commentators mentioned that their reserved time was ending soon, so I imagine that's why.

this mutator is actually kinda difficult. almost got it on the first try as karax + vorazun, but we missed it with 4 robots in the bank. second try as kerrigan + abathur did not go well at all. this time around we somehow activated the hybrids early and they pretty much just steamrolled us. i had thought i could get to broodlords to keep them at a distance when they went off but that didn't work. maybe artanis would work with guardian shell? i only have him at level 11 so i am not sure he can even really compete.
Finally managed to beat the mutator yesterday, but on normal because I have been trying to level Artanis. I feel as though he is close to if not entirely required for this one. You can survive a nuke taking out your army, but I doubt any level can sustain multiple nukes. Additionally since they go off immediately you can't try to destroy the hybrid then get out of the blast radius. I was thinking you could maybe use say some zealots or lings or something to keep them at a distance then pelt them with tempests or guardians but that takes forever and later on there are literal swarms if hybrid.
I guess is you can pump out of a ton of damage or chain stuns to keep things from ever mutating to hybird? Problem is once one does then kiss your army good ye and you may or may not be able to recover. Also good luck if one ever sneaks to your base as it will naturally blow a giant hole in it and possibly demolish your economy.
Since I have been mostly playing my commanders that are at mastery level I forgot how much of a slog the leveling process is. Was going to slap down the cash for abathur and alarak but I don't really want to spend the next few months leveling them up only to have people leave because I am not level <arbitrarily large number>
Mutator co-op is really fun. Me and my friend have managed to beat every week on Brutal no less.
This one... it is certainly one of the hardest yet. I love such high difficulty levels: picking apart and figuring out the strategy to defeat unfair combinations is what makes the mode so good. Yet as they push the difficulty up I feel like a number of commanders can be left behind. Certainly some commanders just get screwed by certain combinations. Kerrigan is just terrible at this one for instance. She has very weak alpha-strike abilities and no resilience against nukes. These facts, combined with the slow leveling, makes it difficult to compete sometimes.
This mutator is no joke. To win the war, you must never fight a battle. The enemy must be utterly overwhelmed or destroyed before they can even attack... otherwise things can spiral out of control near instantly. Thus masters of long range combat and commanders who excel at picking unfair fights like Karax and Vorazun are pretty much critical. If you have great micro+macro skill a good Raynor who uses mass spider mines can nearly solo the challenge... it's really crazy.
I was so... so close to winning with Swann. I have a level 15 Swann and he's actually pretty great at this map once he gets a nice critical mass of Siege Tanks:
The Hercules can transport tanks IN siege mode so you can quickly move them away from nuclear hybrid while keeping up damage and safety.
Thors and Hercules can actually take a nuclear blast and survive as long as they're not dead-center.
If siege-tanks/Thors do die from a nuke you can activate the Immortality Protocol and have them re-build themselves mid-battle.
That being said there are easier commanders to win with, almost certainly, but Swann is my underdog and I love him.
As for my near victory: we made it to the final objective and the bots were returning. My 200/200 Mech army was valiantly battling the final wave. Countless units were being nuked and re-building themselves after the blasts. Even though I was just about done mopping up the enemy forces the remaining hybrid detonated and the splash damage was enough to destroy the final bot which failed the objective. To stumble... only 20 seconds from victory... was truly heartrending. If only I had pushed the battle lines further from the objective...
what about karax makes you say he is useful here? while he does get a lot of bombardment abilities his units themselves arent great. most are relatively short range and warping in static defenses isn't great here. i guess the stun on orbital strike so you can kite?
Karax is good to prevent stray broodlings from spiralizing into hybrids.
Makes sense I guess. I completed the mutator on hard as Artanis with a Karax. Repair beam on tempests is fun. That being said hard is unbelievably easier than brutal.
I had been carefully avoiding this thread till I could watch the KeSPA cup VODs. Neeb might have the best PvP in the world. He looked on another level than Stats, and he destroyed Zest and Trap.

Played Co-Op for the first time last night! It's fun and interesting, but coordination with the other player hasn't really worked in my experience. It was fine in the Rak'Shir mission where you could wait forever, but in the Rohana Cap 5 points mission, that's a taller order. How have you done in Co-Op w/ randos?
May be outside the scope of the thread but anyone know of starcraft lore resources? As in details about protoss and zerg society/hierarchy post lotv? There aren't any pen and paper sc rpgs are there?
Are they canon? Or is it a star wars Eu situation? I honestly don't know for starcraft. I mean ideally it would just be a graphical layout rather than a novel to find a single piece of information. But I just preordered the new SC book so we will see

they are canon. All of the Blizzard books are, for all their properties.

Playing on hard usually isn't too big of a deal? You can usually just early exp and roll with it, granted your partner isn't a total dunce? It's more knowing your commander's build and prioritize according to it, I think.
Though I'll have to say that some race AIs will put up a fierce fight, or maybe they've tuned up the AI in the last few months...? I remember I could more or less singleplay coop mission on hard back in spring, but when I played with a buddy this weekend we got totally rolled by a zerg on that Void Launch thing...

Some of the new mutators are borderline hilariously unforgiving even on lower difficulties. For example, the latest one where only one player could damage the opposing units? If your teammate is not paying attention half your base could be shredded and then THEIR base gets torn apart because you are still recovering.
Before that the hybrid nuke one could easily spiral out of control. It's good and bad that they now require more effort.
So pro league is done? I am only just looking into it because a bunch of people on twitter are proclaiming the death of competitive sc2 on twitter.
because everything is done til blizzcon I think. that's basically all that's left
but they proclaim that every so often regardless. there was only like 2 GSLs this year, and I think 2 SSLs but maybe only one. proleague ended early but I don't think that's all that uncommon.
next year is already set up so it's not literally dead as far as I know but yeah, as viewers have gone down there are less tournaments. maybe if people weren't falling all over themselves to label it a dead game (not you) people would be more excited when it actually is on. grrrrrr.
an American one the Kespa Cup though! that's insane, wish it had generated more excitement. or maybe it did but that excitement died down since the Kespa Cup was meant as sort of a year-end thing and now not much is happening.
regardless, the game is gonna change a lot and the time off will benefit both pros and viewers who want good games once the big tourneys come back, probably late january or february.
apologies if I am missing something big but I am lik e99% sure at least the big korean stuff is done.
yeah, people love the "ded gaem" bandwagon for some reason. also SC2 is very popular to hate on in a lot of places. as in ill be watching streams of other stuff and people will randomly start bashing SC2 seemingly unprompted
i mean i only ever watched WCS stuff and was back in WoL the ign pro league. other stuff really only in passing so the loss of this isn't all that big of an impact for me. blizzard seems to be continuing so whatever
For years fans joked that StarCraft was dead. And after this week, the doomsayers may finally be close to the truth.
The StarCraft ProLeague (SPL) is no more, the Korean eSports Association (KeSPA) announced yesterday, and five of the teams competing in the league have closed their StarCraft divisions. [A] sixth team, Afreeca, is leaning towards following suit, according to Fomos. Only the ProLeague’s final champion, the Jin Air Green Wings, will continue StarCraft operation, the organization told Naver.

Although sadly I was too tired to talk with dhal while it was on
This week is the worst idea for a coop mutation ever.
Someone needs to be fired for this.
maybe it'd work if it went to first person/ground level like in WC3? but that just seems to be disastrous
edit: logged in to take a look, and the frist thing i see in the co-op channel is people flipping shit over this mutator
