I decided to marathon through S3 of Arrow, and woof. I knew about a lot of the issues ahead of time but even then
Whole season spoilers
I know she's back next season/in Legends of Tomorrow, but killing off Sara was a tremendous fuck-up on multiple levels. As was keeping her death from Quentin. God, when Nyssa chewed out Laurel for keeping another secret (Oliver accepting Ra's deal) I immediately thought 'Thank you'. Then there was Ray being a creepy stalker, Laurel being a crap Canary, Quentin going off the rails and Felicity crying in almost. every. episode. There's more but those were some of the big issues I had. That DJ plot was dumb, but I kinda think that dude has a future in VA work.
There were some bright spots, Roy as Arsenal is awesome, shame he had to leave. Although I'm up for Thea joining the team (something I wouldn't have been found dead saying at the start of season 1).
I can only imagine the life of a CW writer.
"Oh, have you told Mike that the milk has gone bad?"
"No. He can never know, it would destroy him."
about roy
coulton has confirmed he will be back
as for the rest
the season was really good and really bad at the same time
It had some really great bits, particularly
Ra's who owns every scene he's in.
Fun fact: Liam Neeson almost reprised that role, but was busy with other work and couldn't make it happen.
Ray Palmer's bits are neat, but it made some sense when I heard he was supposed to be Ted Kord but DC said no so they wrote Palmer into it instead.
My main beefs with season three are as follows
- The handling of Felicity, who basically has zero agency and is tossed between boyfriends with little to no say in any of it.
- The decline in the quality of fight scenes. Like, season 3 just stopped trying to make things seem tense. Everything got kinda formulaic and predictable. I just stopped feeling like the gang was ever in any real danger. S4 hasn't really fixed this.
- The show's desperation to make everyone care about the plot with one silly drama bomb after another. WHO KILLED SARA? Wait, was it Merlyn? No! Was it Roy? NO! it was Thea! Who was being mind controlled by Merlyn! Who is now blackmailing Ollie to fight Ra's al Ghul by threatening to throw his own daughter under the bus! DUN DUNNNN
Oh shit now Ollie's going to be the new Ra's! But he doesn't want to be! Oh no, now Ra's is terrorizing the city! Oh no, now Thea is going to die! Oh no, now Ollie is turning dark side! Oh wait he's faking it. OH NO MERYLN BACKSTABS HIM.
Just
fucking stop it. Please.
And my last beef is just... Laurel. Just fuck Laurel. She's never not been the worst character in the show. Her sister was so much better, and then she got fridged to make Laurel more interesting. Bleugh.
Really?
I absolutely hated the actor who played Ra's.
Like, one of the worst parts of the whole season was that actor.
He was okay, but I wasn't exactly clamoring for more of him. He was a far less interesting antagonist than Slade or Damien Darhk.
I felt like Ra's was written well enough that, even though I was able to unequivocally hate him as a villain, I had to concede the occasional point, and he wasn't evil for evil's sake.
Also the short hier to the demon arc did a lot to demonstrate who he is and why he is the way he is, so that was neat.

He told Felicity to go tell Oliver how she really felt while she still had the chance to, because he was not given that chance. The whole episode with all the brainwashing and everything shows us that Ra's was clearly subjected to the same treatment when he was the heir. He repeatedly does not kill someone when he could have purely because there is a good, logical reason not to (as opposed to killing them because lol evil), He only laments not killing his rival due to the problems it caused his reign, and then stops Ollie with a "better" option. He's not evil for the sake of evil, he's the head of the demon, and acts in the best interest of furthering the league's goals, strength, and prosperity.

What exactly were the League's goals?
Because I never got a sense of that. Their goals seemed to be... antagonism?

Yeah that didn't make me think he was a good character. He seemed like a guy who was just going through the motions, and approached it with all the enthusiasm and emotion of a guy who was doing a 9 to 5 desk job.
That can work, Dr Doom pulls it off really well, but he does it because he thinks people are beneath him. However as soon as it's revealed that he's trying to recruit Oliver instead , and tells Oliver that he can do what he wants when he becomes Ra's it just doesn't make any sense anymore. If Ra's can do anything because he's Ra's then why does the current Ra's just go through the motions and do a bunch of stuff he clearly doesn't want to do.
I'm not a huge fan of Merlin, but Merlin seems like a better Ra's than the previous one was because he actually embraces the whole role.

My interpretation was that he was just kinda tired of this shit and wanted to hand it off, saw Oliver as the prophesied one to do it and went all in so he can finally just pass the mantel. Thing is he, does care if its in the right hands.
Honestly Merlin deserves it just on the grounds of the ridiculous Xanatos gambit running through the whole damn season. Like, holy fuck that guy could beat Batman.

The League's goals in this universe have never been adequately explained so I have no idea when a character is supposed to be acting in accordance with their agenda or not

Yeah, this was my biggest problem
They didn't really have any goals that I could tell, and they were led by the human equivalent of a wet piece of cardboard
So they just kind of felt like antagonists for the sake of antagonists

I kinda assumed that the League were manipulating the world from the shadows to their perception of the greater good, although I admit we don't really see much of that.
Ra's was ok, he was great in 'The Climb', especially that line about taking Oliver's weapons 'when he was done with them'. Although forcing Nyssa into an arranged marriage was a major dick move, on top of his existing poor treatment of her.

I dunno, I think at this point it is justified to shit on "Tony vs X". It has been kind of run into the ground lately.
I mean we don't even know if they're really fighting each other
All we have is a teaser that has them about to punch each other
Which hints at that, yeah, but there have been misleading or mostly inaccurate teasers for events before and they are obviously trying to get that Civil War buzz by plastering the image of CAPTAIN AMERICA VS. IRON MAN everywhere
But Bendis has written 4 events, 3 of which are fantastic (1 Of those probably being the single best event they've done outside of maybe Secret Wars depending on how it ends) and is also writing a pretty great, fun Iron Man book right now so I very much doubt Tony will be in the antagonistic role he is usually shoved into. And with Sam Wilson having one of the most acclaimed books in the relaunch and also being super liberal and proactive and a great hero he likely isn't going to be either.
There's a ton we don't know. I'm tired of heroes fighting each other too but just as Secret Wars only had a few tenuous connections to the original event this might just have a handful of similar themes to CW 1.
Blank while I admire your restraint
The idea that we should wait when the thing they are showing is cap and Tony punching each other seems a bit silly
Like that's what they're advertising
If you don't like that it is perfectly justified to be upset
I didn't say you can't be upset
I said we should maybe wait before shitting on event we know nothing about other than "there is a teaser image of Cap and Iron Man facing off"
If you hate that teaser that's totally fine but there are tons and tons of different ways they could tell a story based on that image and we have no idea what they are actually doing
Like I get why the gut reaction is OH GOD THEY'RE JUST DOING CIVIL WAR ALL OVER AGAIN, that is what the teaser is kind of meant to envoke, but Marvel literally just did a giant event all about revisiting old events and putting distinct spins on them so there's not a lot of reason to believe this is going to just be the same thing with a different status quo going in. Especially since Bendis is already writing Tony as extremely likeable and heroic and dashing which is already totally against one of the first event's biggest flaws.
It's not just "oh noes civil war again", it's that plus "oh noes, Tony versus other heroes....again." I like a lot of Bendis's work, this could turn out to be good. It also looks like a derivative cash-in that only exists because of the movie coming out.
It may not be, but the fact they chose the first image to release to tease the event, to be Tony and Cap punching each other doesn't fill me with hope.
I wouldn't even mind Civil War 2 coming out if it weren't for Time Runs Out happening so recently. I mean, it's a business. I get it. However, they just had Iron Man and Cap (well, Steve Rogers) fighting each other earlier this year.

The premise of the Spider-Women event got revealed via Amazon
Jess tries to take a more active role in training Silk and Gwen but they end up stuck in Gwen's universe, facing down that version of Cindy Moon who runs S.I.L.K., a Hydra or AIM equivalent.
