I actually want it to be a port / deluxe edition of 4 since that means all of the characters will be back, whereas a completely new game would likely mean a reduced roster.
Honestly a brand new game sounds worse to me than a port. I have literally no complaints with SSB4's gameplay and I want them to preserve the whole cast. Maybe delete a few Fire Emblem characters, just out of principle. Really I just want as many new characters as possible, and better netcode, that's it.

I wouldn't mind new stages, items, and modes, but those could easily be added on top of Smash 4. Maybe what I really want is a Smash 4.5.
So... just the fact that it's Breath of the Wild Link in the trailer makes me feel like we're in for a significant revision, even if they used Smash 4 as a base. As for the short announce-release cycle, that's been Nintendo's MO for a while now. They've been bitten by overhyping their games due to thin release schedules in the past, so I suspect they're keeping the hype cycle shorter both because they want to and because they can.

By the way, a thing I noticed when I was watching this - the smash 4 reveals made the logo by making the cross out of flame, now it's the empty space and everything else is the fire

I'm not really even a huge smash fan. I had it on WiiU plus the DLC but it was mostly because I knew my roomates at the time would be into it. I'm pretty intrested to see if this is brand new or deluxe. I need Shovel Knight. He was made to be in Smash dammit.
This would prob be the only case where I would say a deluxe port is extremely justified. Everything about the last smash was borderline perfection imo with the exception of no story mode.

I half suspect that the delays for the online service were to launch alongside Smash.
I suspect we'll see at least Inklings, Wolf, and Ice Climbers in the game. Maybe Pichu since it seems like Sakurai really made an effort to get everyone back.
Other than that, maybe someone like Rex from XC2? Let him switch weapons to differentiate him from Shulk (and the many swordsfolk in the game as it is). Isaac from Golden Sun is that one eternal choice, but if Duck Hunt managed to get in before him...

I think "well maintained servers that can handle online play like every other console" is justification enough. Smash is just the shining golden godgame to show off their new servers and (hopefully) good netcode.

It might be aces and smash online could still be terrible, that’s the problem. Online games seem smooth or not more or less based on how well the netcode is able to cheat, and smash is a game type that is very difficult to cheat on, compared to like an FPS or a racing game.

All I want for a new character is Toad. I'd take Captain Toad as well. Every other character is just gravy after Toad finally gets his time to shine.
Decloning characters should also take priority, especially Ganondorf. Or, if they want to keep him mostly the same due to familiarity with the character, then make a variant Ganondorf with a new moveset. Hyrule Warriors style Ganondorf with that character design and the dual swords? I want it. I want it so bad.
New characters are almost going to have to be deep dives by definition, since the last Smash more or less covered all the major bases. I'm trying to think of big ones that aren't already in:
Waluigi
Ridley
Tingle
Another Pokemon, maybe a grass starter assuming Charizard and Greninja are still in
Dillon (he's been in three games!)
Somebody from Arms
Captain Toad? (His thing is he isn't a fighter, but Sakurai finds a way)
Somebody else from Punch-Out?
I'm guessing we'll get some more third-party stuff as well -- given how well Switch is doing, I'm sure Nintendo's fielding loads of requests.
