Assist trophies have a lot of potential characters to choose from. But I'd rather see more big time third party characters than more deeply obscure Nintendo characters. The floodgates are open now.
Travis Touchdown is pretty damn likely to be a new 3rd party rep. I'd be totally down for a beam katana otaku asshole fighting against literal blue-haired anime bros.
I'd love to get Snake back, but I'm not getting my hopes up -- I think he showed up in Brawl because Sakurai and Kojima were friendly, and Kojima was rather famously fucked over by Konami.

Y'know recently CDProjekt floated the idea to their fans of Geralt appearing in another Dev's game. Most people, myself included, assumed Soul Caliber. However that Tweet was posted like a day or two before the Nintendo Direct. Coincidence?!
Yeah probably, but I'd be totally on board with Geralt being in Smash.
edit- Heh, here was the message
"What if Geralt was going to step out of the @witchergame for the very first time to make an appearance in one of the upcoming games later this year?"

I still feel weird about characters who have never been on a Nintendo platform making the cut. Although Cloud basically slipped in on a technicality. But either way, Geralt is too dark a character for the tone of the game IMO.

if the name is Super Smash Bros for Switch (working title) then doesn't that indicate that it's a brand new game? When a game is ported to Switch they don't give it a "working title", it either has the same name as the original game or they add HD or Deluxe at the end like with MK8.
Further evidence: If it was a smash 4 port wouldn't the copyright at the end be the same as for Smash 4? It's not, it has a new one.

I'm expecting it to be a "new" game - enough is changed that it's not really a port anymore, but they're not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater either. Much like Splatoon 2.

Yeah I was thinking a Splatoon 2 situation might also be whats happening, which I'm totally cool with.
I wonder if the Inkling will maybe take a page from Mega Man's book and have a basic projectile attack as a jab attack that can be performed while standing or walking forward.
I could see Squid form being a Meta Knight-esque concealed movement ability that lets them get out of the current area quickly.
Recovery is gonna be either Super Jump+Splashdown, or the Inkjet.

Nah. First off, the technical names of the previous Smash were "Super Smash Bros. for 3DS" and "Super Smash Bros. for Wii U." The new one pretty much has to have a new name. Plus, the different names didn't stop the previous Smashes from being the same platform.
As for the copyrights, the copyrights that show up on trailers in the past are defined by who is in that particular trailer or previous trailers. It's missing the various Pokemon copyrights, and barring Reggie storming into Game Freak and peeing on every computer he can find Pokemon are definitely going to be in the next Smash.
My bet's on a modified Smash 4 with loads of new stuff. But we'll find out.

Wouldn't be Inklings if they didn't have a ground-painting mechanic to enable squid form IMO. Any ink-based attack near the ground could paint the area which allows them to move quickly or dodge while fighting there, but is no good for aerial combat.

Translated from Sakurai's Tweet.
"While we haven't gotten to the point where we can announce the game's title, I've been working on the title in silence day after day. Please look forward to new information and when the title goes on sale!! "
Yeah, makes me lean towards "new title".

That seems a bit complex for a main mechanic and would be very stage-dependent. But we'll see.

My point is that if it really was a straight up port then it would surely follow the naming conventions of the previous two games ( as in Smash for 3DS and Smash for WiiU). The fact that it's still untitled leads me to believe that it's not a straight up port.

The copyright at the end of the trailer was for the game itself.

Or they're thinking of a completely new title for the port. Plenty of ports have new names.

The Pokemon copyrights are always on the game itself.
I am 60/40 on it being a new game vs a port. There's just enough bits of evidence that it might be a new game. And if it were a port, I can't see any reason being coy about it.
Mario Kart was a game that should have been new, but was a port. Splatoon was a game that should have been a port, but was new.
So who bloodly knows. I hope it's new, but if it's not then I hope there's enough new stuff to be excited about.

Because smash is more important and speculation drives word of mouth hype.

It could be a case of Nintendo still not understanding the mass popularity of a given thing, like the gamecube adapter or the NES/SNES minis. However, I agree. I think in a direct full of ports, to not just come right out and call it a port would be silly. I'm leaning towards new game.
Switch has a lot of enhanced ports so it makes sense for smash to be, therefore it is one
And since they’re not saying it is, they’re being cagey
That aside this is the shortest smash turnaround time since 64->melee (~3,6,6 years to 4) and it seems even shorter since smash 4 was supported by dlc, so, it's like it finished coming out 2 years ago
Otoh they make one per console so who's to say they even needed that long for any of them, and the time difference could just be a symptom of the shorter wiiu generation

On the contrary, I'd say Nintendo knows exactly how popular Smash is and will string us along mercilessly until pretty much the entire Switch audience is "shut up and take my money" whether it's a port or not. I mean, literally the only thing we know about this Smash so far is "the Squid Kids are in it."
I'd be fine with a port as the core of the game. Make a few balance changes, put a few new characters and stages in there, and maybe add in smash run and I think that's a pretty strong entry.
Hopefully the gamecube controller adapter is compatible.

It already is! You can play Brawlout with a Gamecube controller on Switch right now.
Hah, I just realized. The time between the announcement of this game and its release will be about half that of the last Smash (assuming it doesn't get delayed).
Assuming Sakurai/Nintendo want to do the same drip-feed of information during that time we could be in for more Smash info pretty much every month. Or more.
