It's been such a long time I forgot the car character was trans. I just assumed she was leading her to the boy's wing to say something like "Now you're here with the rest of the animals."
i haven't kept up with DOA enough to know whether the character was trans or not
Carla is a version of Ultracar from Shortpacked. Ultracar was a sentient car who got a humanoid robot body, making her a trans-humanoid. In DoA she is just trans. I think the only reference in DoA itself was when she thought the penis drawn on her door was a hate-crime. There might have been one other, but it was very easy to miss (and forget apparently).

I checked the previous strips tagged with Carla's previous appearances and they only hint at her status such as her having her own room and not being part of a local roller derby team for 'a reason'. What's going on now will probably be the first time the comic spells it out for the reader.

I haven't read it but I think I remember somebody saying that the character in shortpacked was a car, then turned into a person, but didn't identify with the gender of their human body? or something like that. loathe as I am to defend the DOAverse's storytelling it seems like that character being trans has precedent at least.
If I'm remembering Shortpacked correctly, Ultracar towards the end was having a crisis of identity from all the other smart cars based on the design and Joe, her creator, asked if Ultracar wanted a new body and if so would it be male or female. So it was less about a car becoming humanoid and more a car with no concept of gender identity trying to determine which they identified with.
I may be totally off on this one and I'm not archive diving to find out, but that's what I remember.

I, for one, am insanely excited to see how ol' hamhands handles this nascent plotline.
I don't think Willis is trying to make a cheeky joke or any sort of real comparison, there
I am just going off what I see posted here so I honestly have no idea about what he's trying to do, it was just voiced as a comparable thing and I thought that was weird
Oh, I wasn't trying to stab at you or anything. Willis might have inspired off the Ultra Car arc, and realized that "Hey, maybe it would be a good idea to have a trans woman in this"
he's a pretty legit dude, and this is way less barfworthy inclusion than most major television show and movies

If there wasn't a snide remark from Mary in a previous strip I would guess that Mary doesn't know about Carla. I can't remember the snide remark, it wasn't really trans specific, I think it might have been "why does she get a room to herself?" Something like that.

Transphobia is the fear of people who are transitional?
With homophobia and transphobia, you kind of have to look beyond the literal definition of "phobia." It's not like agoraphobia or arachnophobia.
It's more of a descriptor of a pattern of behavior that indicates the "phobic" person does not respect or recognize sexual orientations or gender expressions outside of heterosexual cisgender. And also a big dose of irrational fear.

Lets say I made a game and through hints and diary entries, let the player know that the player character had transitioned from male to female. Say I did not insert a single direct mention of it in the entire game, not a single person having a problem with it, none of their enemies mocking them for it, and not having a single oops moment where it gets revealed in public. Everyone knows about this character, no one cares, this character knows both of those facts.
Would this be considered a "good" representation in gaming of a trans character?

It likely would. Although you can never be certain since you aren't perfect and neither are your players.

Beauty is the eye of the beholder.
My plan B was to have them (unseen by the viewer) get caught in the blast of an artillery shell, they get regenerated by the magic powers of their commander but default back to their original chemical makeup. The entire game is them dealing with shell shock, everyone asking if they're okay, how are they holding up, etc. etc., all the shit you don't want to hear when you're seriously injured.
Final cutscene after the campaign is them back to normal, fixing their hair in the mirror, dressing in a new uniform and attending a debrief, and standing account for their actions in the game.
This happened to me on the walk back from work nearly a year ago
Only it was two people a car and a baseball bat
They roll up on me one gets out with the bat runs at me and begins to swing when I disarm him
It's scary to know it was a muscle memory.
I take the bat from one watch as he falls on his ass and ask would he like to try again offering the bat
The one in the car peels out with the door open his friend realizing what is going on runs after him in fear
I really thought it was just sad they attempted to jump me because they had nothing better to do

The idea of a sentient car becoming humanoid being comparable to being trans rubs me the wrong way something fierce

oh okay
that's no call for mary doing what she did
but yeah, there are more than a few people I personally find to be the worst in doa, gender and sexual identity non-withstanding

North World: Epic of Conrad ran as a webcomic in 2007-2008. The original webcomic site is now down, but the comic is available on the author's website. It has also been published by Oni Press as a paperback
And I can see Mary trying to hold that over Ruth's head to get out of any sort of punishment for her remark.
