My first response to that combat video is how freaking long it takes for Sonic to be able to kill anything.

I don't know why it would be, but I really hope that slow piano music is just a placeholder for the actual upbeat music. Everything is so slow in that video I got bored watching Sonic fight one enemy.

I feel like they just copy pasted Breath of the Wild and put Sonic and a couple robots in it without thinking at all about how to make it more like a Sonic game.

At first I thought the eyeball robot was a boss and accepted that it would be a little slow but no, that's an overworld enemy, why would that take 3-4 cycles to kill one overworld enemy?

Like, enemies are supposed to pop like balloons in Sonic games, only bosses should take multiple hits... maybe you need to like, use a specific attack, but it should all be fast kills. Hell, enemies are usually just slightly hazardous platforms in the classic games!

As I watched the first 30 seconds I realized that the next two videos they'll show will be the Upgrades Video and the Loot Video

This is also a terrible way to present all of this. Like, was this a badly thought out deal with IGN, was there supposed to be a big trailer out first that got bumped, how could you think "slow sad piano music and out-of-context gameplay footage with zero commentary" was how you show all this for the first time

I remembering back to the first trailer put out for Sonic Adventure, nearly a quarter of a century ago.

(Apologies for potato quality, it's the only one I could find)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5k9CgkWRg8

I had this trailer on a disc from Dreamcast magazine I think.

Regardless, look at the difference. Sonic Adventure is blasting Open Your Heart while showing cutscenes, running through levels, snowboarding, playing as Knuckles, fighting bosses, the new homing attack and lightspeed dash, set pieces like the killer whale, many varied locations, playing as Amy, playing as new character Gamma, various other characters and NPCs, and showing off their water tech. Not to mention the new designs for Sonic, Robotnik, and Amy. This was a hype trailer for Sonic's big 3D debut.

Sonic Frontier has Sonic wandering around a mostly empty field and whaling on nondescript enemies, all set to the same piano music. It does show off some new moves and it's graphics, but beyond that the presentation leaves a lot to be desired.

    • Silpheed (Mega CD)
    • Shining Force CD (Mega CD)

Also not for this game in particular but I wish art directors looked at like… a few… photos of landscapes before making their open world game. I want a game to start in one of these places instead of Vague Grass Area.

the specific aping of the tone of BotW just makes me think of a micromanaging boss going "nintendo did it like this, make it quiet with the tiny piano sounds, make the world feel the same way" etc.

That choice to go for the plinky ponky empty space between notes thing really aggravates me for some reason. It was a choice made with intent by the music producer for Breath of the Wild, for better or worse, to suit that exact game. You can’t use it for a totally different game, especially one about a speedy lil’ dude.

Even if they’d just chosen a different instrument. Like, I typed in ‘sonic violin’ into Google and got what I think would be a better path to go down if you really want to lose arguably the best thing about the franchise.

I will never understand why they continue to insist that Sonic collect rings in 3D and have them all fly out of you pinata style when you get hit.

Like, even mario changed to using a health system when it got to 3D. How the absolute balls are you gonna have that system in an open world RPG?

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

  • TheySlashThemTheySlashThem Registered User regular
I forget where it started but they've actually made a massive concession to the health system in the last several 3d games - you only lose SOME of your rings when you get hit

    LBD_Nytetrayn
  • Endless_SerpentsEndless_Serpents Registered User regular
Rings are a good mechanic, genuinely, in a linear level. It’s a record of how neatly you complete a level. A perfect run along the best route should earn you the most coins.

Plus the whole piñata thing means you’re practically invincible, getting hit wastes time and rings, but you can at least survive until the end in most cases.

In an open world I just don’t get what they’re for. But neither do the developers.

I'd argue that an approach akin to how mario odyssey treats coins would work best

they just need to come up with something good to spend rings on

and by come up with something I mean bring back the fucking chao garden

The Chao garden and the entirety of the Yakuza series proves you can go very far by letting somebody bolt a passion project minigame or twelve into a totally different game as a side activity.

Yeah, just put in some Yakuza property games and mini games to spend rings on, you lose some rings when you die (a la odyssey) and have a standard health bar or one that at least makes sense for a sonic type game

Shadow is OK if ya liked Sonic Heroes at all. Very much a sequel to that. Think the branching storyline concept was fairly ambitious, worked a lot better than later morality systems in stuff like inFamous...

And of course the soundtrack is a fuckin' bop, it's like Heroes with the guitars turned up and everything lowered a few octaves:

    the basic gameplay was fun

but when I realized that shadow doubled down on heroes's worst ideas- making you redo identical content several times to see the true ending, and making you hunt for widgets in levels that constantly push you forward with a camera that actively fights against exploration- I was out.
