Aw yiss, very happy it is indeed sticking to the 'modern' formula of Generations. Some refinements to the 'classic' half along with it apparently having a story and setting beyond "look at these old levels you liked!" could make it an excellent sequel to one of my favourite games.
Maybe they'll even throw in Boom Sonic as a third, "Adventure" style of gameplay?

Sonic Team has an annoying habit of reinventing the wheel when it comes to Sonic gameplay, rather than iterate they'll just throw everything in the trash and start from scratch each time. It is heartening that it "looks like an existing Sonic game" because the existing Sonic game it looks like is both radical and tubular, and in the five and a half years since that one came out we have had some exceptionally poor replacements for it.

In the ancient age of a few years back ('round about the time Sonic Heroes was the new thing), the Sonic Cycle was a mildly popular internet meme regarding Sonic games, which described how events played out every time a Sonic game was in development.
A Sonic game is announced, and looks good in initial screenshots. Fans are hyped, excited to see the series get a good entry again.
More information is revealed, we start to see elements the fans don't want, people get worried.
The game is released, people hate it, and swear to never be fooled again
