The part about how it always starts with just Sonic and they swear there's no other characters and then all the other characters show up is the one that always stands out to me.
Especially since they've already done it with this one, starting with just Sonic (and other Sonic), then saying the friends were in there but just in cutscenes, and now showing off a new third playable character.
I actually kind of hate that "the fans hate playing as anyone but Sonic" seems to have been accepted at the company level. I actually really like playing as other characters, when it's done well, but for the past decade, it's like they're afraid to do anything but Sonic.

In Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 playing as sonic basically meant you were playing the same character except you can't do the cool shit the other two characters could.

I liked Knuckles in Sonic and Knuckles. He had cool powers. I still look at him in that game and go, man, that's one radical echidna.

I've got nothing against generally playing as other characters but at some point at least the option of a Sonic-only game again would be nice

I liked Heroes. Was mostly interested by Chaotix's missions, since they were the only team that wasn't a difficulty selector in disguise. And as such, they had some slightly different mechanics. Mostly just centered around Espio, though. Wouldn't mind another game featuring them.

In the ancient age of a few years back ('round about the time Sonic Heroes was the new thing), the Sonic Cycle was a mildly popular internet meme regarding Sonic games, which described how events played out every time a Sonic game was in development.
A Sonic game is announced, and looks good in initial screenshots. Fans are hyped, excited to see the series get a good entry again.
More information is revealed, we start to see elements the fans don't want, people get worried.

It's full of characters no one cares about, like Birdo, Kiddie Kong from DKC 3, Big the Cat, and the Daytona Car from Fighting Vipers.
