It seems to me that one thing the Balan team should have realized is that is if the player can handle moving a character around a 3D space and also wrangling the camera, they are probably going to be bored with the rest of the game they built.

Robotnik taking over the company would explain the games.
We’re in this cycle where a brand or celeb announces an NFT one day, the internet gets justifiably pissed, and then they cancel a day or two later.
Each time a new one tries you gotta wonder if their marketing guy is like I dunno maybe it’ll be different for us?
It is never different.

A Dungeon Keeper-esque game where you play as Robotnik and have to design crazy sci-fi lairs and armies of goofy theme-park looking robots while trying to obtain ancient magical artifacts to power your doomsday device could be fun.
I would submit that a game can be good in spite of a less-than-great control scheme.
Sure but in what ways does KAR's control scheme hamper its gameplay
The design complements it well and was built with the single button controls in mind
Could you make a more complex and deeper game if you had more buttons to work with? Sure, but then it wouldn't be kirby air ride, it'd be something else

I don't know, I don't have a dog in that hunt. I was just pointing out that shoeboxjeddy's assertion that the control scheme would've been better if it separated out some of the button assignments more, and your assertion that it was a good game, aren't mutually exclusive.
You can make a good one-button game, you just have to actually make a game with one button that is good. It's usually a terrible game design goal outside of a game jam, though. 2D sonic games just have the one button, but there are enough elements that impact how that one button works to make it fun.

Thats context sensitive though. Balan couldn't even do that

I just tried different stuff and stumbled on how to manipulate it. I never knew about its infamy until I started watching let's-plays. In hindsight, I can see why people didn't always get it, but it came as a surprise to me how big a deal it was for a lot of people.
I remember having to use a turbo controller and bubble shield to get by. I was so excited when I learned the actual way to do it because it meant I could finish the game with Tails and Knuckles.
I wasted multiple lives as a child due to time-out trying to figure out the jump timing on the damn thing. You could get somewhat close sometimes, but never make it.

Jump timing? You press up and down and the drum moves. It's a vertical swing set if that helps you visualize. At max oscillation, you aren't going to miss the jump, the trick is realizing you can directly affect what the drum is doing, which is a mechanic that you may never have noticed up until that moment.
the reason it's notorious is because there's no immediately obvious feedback that pressing up or down does anything, let alone holding them down, so people assume that the thing it does appear to respond to, jumping, is the intended way to interact with it and get stuck trying to make it bounce enough to move by timing jumps correctly

I know that now, but I didn't know that thirty years ago.

I once called my cousin long-distance, back when that was a thing, to ask about that drum.
I wonder if they weren't able to get Ben Schwartz for a more permanent position as Sonic and that's why RCS is back
