Watched the Sonic 2 movie over the weekend and it was a hoot. Looking forward to the 3rd. Given the initially outrageous but ultimately fantastic voice casting of Idris Elba as Knuckles, who do we think Shadow is gonna be?
I'm voting Nicolas Cage
Keanu Reeves
Ehh, giving his performance in Toy Story 4, I don't think he's really up for voice acting. To my memory, there was nothing really notable about his voice work in that movie that would set him apart from anyone else doing that role. Whereas it feels someone doing Knuckles other than Elba would be very noticeable.
He did good enough in Cyberpunk, though he really just has to play a narcissistic tool for the most part.
Although honestly, "PG-rated Johnny Silverhand" would work for Shadow's voice tone.
Jensen Ackles would be a solid pick.
Shit, I just realized we'll never get that formerly-inevitable Lance Reddick-voiced Sonic character now.
I mean it makes perfect sense, Angry Birds is a complex physics based game that isn’t incredibly easy to reproduce, and Rovio are at the height of their relevance. No, I kid, they’ve made some others games, such as… let me google… ah yes, one of those games where you shoot a ball at some other balls and if they’re the same they both disappear.
I guess it must be for their knowledge of mobile games, and then Sega will make some mobile games with their own crews.

The IP and movies are most likely what they really want I doubt anyone remembers the games anymore
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
a whole ton of confidential 1996-97 documents (272 pages worth) from Sega of America just dropped out of nowhere onto SegaRetro, the big Sega wiki
Really crazy stuff, including marketing plans and suggestions, internal emails from executives like Tom Kalinske, comparisons between Saturn and PlayStation, release calendars, and more. I don't know if I can link the document here but folks have dug out some interesting stuff:
The remaining major notes are emails of Kalinske wanting to sell the Saturn at $149 with a packed-in modem, so they could undercut PSX and change gears for Sega by treating them as futuristic and online-forward. Sounds mighty familiar..
oh yeah, 90s SOA and SOJ were super dysfunctional and either led to or didn't help many of sega's business plan problems

I'm honestly wowed by Sonic Frontiers
it legitimately makes Sonic, the character, feel Cool
not Snarky, or Edgy, or With 'Tude, but just Cool
I never, ever, ever thought I would see Sonic the Hedgehog deliver a line and genuinely think "that was freakin' cool"
it's a mix of the actual characterization they give him in the game, the interactions he has with the others, and how it's reflected in the gameplay
for the first time I feel like I fucking get Sonic, and that's wild
I don't think every Sonic game from now on needs to be as dramatic and self-serious as Frontiers, not at all - but it shows that at its core, Sonic has something authentically appealing to him - something I never really understood before but assumed was just forever beyond my conception

Finished the Final Horizon DLC this morning. I got mixed feelings - the new ending was delicious, loved it. But man, structurally that whole thing felt jank as hell. Definitely feels like a tiny skeleton crew was left to work on it unsupervised.
There's some weird oversights, like the Jukebox not being available, meaning playing as the 3 new characters forces you to hear their fairly short themes on loop for hours, as they don't get distinct music for each area of the island... not to mention swapping between them seems to be restricted to talking to an NPC in a difficult to reach location rather than a simple menu option? Why!?
Yeah I'm partly through it and it's got some real fun stuff and also some bits that are either a response to people thinking Frontiers was too easy or just too janky to do.
I also kept thinking I'd get the ability to freely switch characters later until a random loading screen tool-tip mentioned switching so now I have to figure out how to actually do it.

The footage starting at 1:11 is interesting, as it was previously part of a leak that came out of Sega about 6 or so months ago, featuring three games: unreleased early footage of Sonic Frontiers, the clip of Yukari's big new move, and this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pvn4f-AVZk
For a logn time people were debating if any of that was real, with some claiming that it was fanmade. now that we know the Persona footage is real...
Sonic Superstars apparently broke street date in some places, so there are spoilers out there.
The new character Trip is a playable character, but doesn't seem to be in the main story. Instead she has her own story like Knuckles in Sonic & Knuckles where it takes place after the main story and she goes through all the zones that have been modified for her.
She doesn't wear her helmet when playable (unless that's an option somewhere since I think this game has alternate costumes) and instead of curling into a ball, she curls into a large ring like Vector did back in Knuckles Chaotix. While in ring form, she can roll up vertical walls and stuff because of her spikes.
Fang does not seem to be playable.

Sonic Superstars is very fun, but also I can't stop thinking "wow this definitely started life as Sonic 4: Episode 3"
The soundtrack is even using the same sound font, it's wild.
Huh apparently sega has been submitting builds for steam verification that do not have the DRM of the actual retail version they put on the store after approval, which is fucking with the store page listing 3rd party DRM requirements and internet connection requirements (denuvo in this case)
hard to say if that's just an oversight on sega's part or actively trying to hide it, seems pretty dumb of them if it was on purpose though on account of how easily caught that is and how mad people will get about the appearance of malfeasance
I got the physical Switch version, thinking to myself that I'd be fine in terms of the required storage; the game is 4 gigs and I had about 1.2 free on both system memory and flash card. The game wanted to update (because there's always a day-1 update) and the update data was 3.3 gigs. Fortunately I had two very large games that I'm probably not going to play again (World of Final Fantasy Maxima and Yooka-Laylee) to sacrifice for space, but dang. Almost beat the whole point of getting the physical version in the first place.
Anyway, I'm enjoying the game so far (played the first two Zones). I think the only thing you use the Medals for is to buy robot parts for the competitive mode, but I can't help throwing myself into every mini-game to get more of them anyway. ... if you have the same compulsion, I hope you like Sonic 1's Special Stages. You'll be playing a lot of them.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

Sega just bought the Angry Birds creators, Rovio, for approximately $776 million dollars

Seems like a perfect fit for Sega.
Hard Drive making some normies Google some stuff today.
the union name is a pun on the old UK marketing slogan lol

Sega: we know who makes up the Sonic fandom, you fucking freaks you
Like Robotnik, she got a rather big redesign going into Sonic Adventure.
Apparently you'll be able to get a Modern Amy skin by subscribing to a Sonic Newsletter or something.
I didn't expect a Cosmic Smash revival today, that's for sure

No communication between SoA and SoJ.

A trailer for Persona 3 Reload featuring one of the game's party members came out a few days ago
