Virtual Hydlide? Really? REALLY?
I somehow forgot Panzer Dragoon was from the Saturn though, I had mentally shifted it on to the Dreamcast.

virtual hydlide is one of the worst games ever made
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Well, my interest in that just dried up. Going down the new Shining Force path, I see.
I've been hearing this sentiment a lot today and I'm not sure what exactly the problem is. Maybe it's just me in that I've never played any of these other games that have a similar combat system to this new style, but at first glance, I'm fine with it.

Yeah uh
Long running series + rarely gets localized + known for a certain gameplay style + sudden complete gameplay change is a pretty understandable recipe for disappointment.
I picked up Sonic Generations recently. That game's really fun, even if some of the bosses weren't great. I like that you can unlock old music to use in the levels.
I'm not that surprised that fans of a series are upset that the gameplay component of the new game is an entirely different genre than the old games.
I didn't play any of the old games either and I'm a bit disappointed, even though the gameplay itself actually looks pretty cool.
But I am one of those fans of the series. I was playing it on the Saturn in the late 90s before it was even a series. While it is known for being turn-based combat, that’s not the whole game or even the bulk of the game. It’s part of the game, supporting the character-based part. Now, for those who’ve never played it but have only heard of it, the combat portions are probably the only understandable parts because everything else is in Japanese so it tends to get skipped over, so this seems like changing the entire core, and it’s not quite that extreme. I’m open to trying this style out.
Was at work earlier so I couldn't check, but just got home and looked over some of my Twitch videos on Sakura Taisen 2. It looks like the battle portions take up around 1/5th to 2/5ths of the total game time per chapter, more or less depending on the chapter.
I bought a PS2 for the newly revived Shining Force and boy was I disappointed.
Because of various reasons I did not play past the part one of Shining Force 3 that came to the US. So about the time I got a ebay account pre 9/11 I thought I would go look if I could get the whole game even if it was in Japanese
Then years later in about 2010? I remembered that fruitless search and saw it was in the DS and was I ever disappointed in it

both of which are very good, in no small part thanks to matt & liam's experience working in game qa, and them being genuinely sympathetic to the unreasonable task that sega management dumped on the dev team

Sega seem like they're really good at undermining Sonic games.

it's downright uncanny how good they are at sabotaging their games and that they've keep trying to make new ones for so long
the only explanation I can think of is that they're still reliable sellers even after being the butt of a joke about terrible video games for 20 years

Sonic games sell great, and there's a good one just often enough to keep the fans around.
Also honestly most of the "bad" ones are just kinda subpar, and certainly not crappy enough to displease the kids that make up a big chunk of the audience.

The bad ones also often dip into "so bad they're good" territory.
I really enjoyed that LP. It's nice how they're always taking the view of "what was the game trying to do" "how could this have been improved if there was more time available", and it's clear they're having fun even when the game is doing some seriously stupid or frustrating shit. It helps that Liam is the kinda guy who usually looks on the bright side. "It's Fine". So when he actually gets frustrated you know it's bad.
Also I enjoyed how they got genuinely invested in Shadow the Hedgehog's story, which is weirdly so much better then the other two characters'.
On the final boss: "What can you even say when the boss is so obviously unfinished? They know. They know it's bad."

To be fair every Hylide game is one of the worst games ever made.
Which is why I can't believe there hasn't been a successful kickstarter campaign for it yet.

The triumvirate of Weird Hydlide Fans doesn't have that kind of money.

I don't think very many other publishers except maybe Devolver Digital could get away with some of the things the Sonic Twitter account posts.
