If you attach the north and south sides of a 2D JRPG double-sided wrapping map together, you get a tube. If you then attach the east and west sides of that tube together, you get a torus (donut).
Huh, you're right, I never thought of that. Since the circumference is the same on the outer edge as on the inner edge by the hole it's less of a donut shape and more of a tube.
For square or rectangular maps where crossing one edge loops back to the other side, the best approximation would be a torus or donut if you want to imagine a 3D shape

Yeah, but if you made a donut like that out of, say, an actually square map, you'd end up with a really... fat donut? Like, maybe I'm not properly visualizing the proportions, but it seems like things would get really tight if you go toward the inside of the loop. And there's not that many JRPGs with really elongated maps that would work on a toroid. Not to mention one side of the map would be shorter than the other...
Although a fantasy world set on a proper toroidal map where if you're on the inside of the loop you can see the earth curving up into the sky away from you would be pretty rad.
Plus the blue spheres map has a consistent horizon line, it would have a fucked up concave horizon of it was a toroid
Which is just because they're using some optical illusions to create the impression that you're running on a globe but it still makes a weird fucked up impossible shape if you think about it too hard
If you make a torus out of a square map you get some horrific distortion towards the inner hole, but space-wise that's what you get for Asteroid-likes. A "really fat donut" would give the inner hole area even less width to spread out in, since the circumference of the inner hole is now so much less than that of the outer hole!
The obvious answer, then, is that Sonic is not moving - it is the torus that is rotating beneath him, and he is always staying on top of it.
Really, though, it's just shader trickery and whatnot. You're just playing a game of Asteroid where the map is seen at an angle and some light curving is applied to the horizon.

That's a ton of 3D maps in games. Maybe less so now but especially in the early days when they had incredibly limited space to work with they'd do crazy things when building and storing maps and then sort of cheat everything to make it look 3D and normal.
Does anyone else remember Shadow Squadron? It was a 32x game so I guess that is probably why I never hear about it ever, but it was so damn good.
Apparently it was called Stellar Assault in the non-US regions.
My favorite version of the Asteroid map is the one where you have a JRPG world map that wraps around the edges like that. Especially if they then apply a globe filter to it, or give you the Mode7 horizon filter.
Seeing some of these blue sphere maps is making me irrationally angry. How is anyone supposed to figure this out on the ground at high speed? Why would you put that in the game?
blue sphere is easy though and a decent amount of them are linear or symmetrical
granted there are a few that don't make a lot of sense until you see them a couple times but most success at blue sphere is just how quickly you can figure out which one you're in
I feel like with a lot of them you can kind of get a general path that you're supposed to be taking. There are a few that don't follow this rule though (or they do follow it, but you won't get a Perfect if you do it that way).
That all goes out the window with the randomly generated ones in the Extra mode though.

THIS song I had not heard before and sounds very Sonic-y. Sounds like Crush 40 by way of All-American Rejects or something
I only know one Hoobastank song (found a reason for me to change who etc. etc.) and that's very boring, so the first song seemed more likely to be them
The Completionist is doing a Let's Play of Mania, and is doing every Blue Spheres he comes across-- and beating most of them, while the ones he messes up on still show enough aptitude for them to make me jealous.

Pat of Super Best Friends did a Mania stream, and while muddling through the regular sonic stuff his Blue Sphere game was almost flawless. I guess it's just one of those games that really clicks for some people.

Blue spheres can be pretty fun and easy with the right mindset.
Other times it's just fuck it I don't care about rings I just wan spheres
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

Because those world maps are just fucked.
My absolute favorite one of those is the one from Terraria. Because it is supposed to be our Earth, but still behaves like a map from a Final Fantasy game.
now that I think about it though hooters is a perfect fit in japan, they seem to love both western-ish mediocre sit-down chain restaurants and restaurants based on a theme of demeaning female waitstaff
Hooters doesn't seem like it would even stand out much in Japan. The paraplegic catgirl maid cafe across the street would just scoff and tell it to step up its game.

I just saw fan art of Sonic, Silver, and Shadow in the Hooters outfit. I don't even know if that's allowed to be posted on the forum.

it doesn't make them any imaginable 3D shape, it's something more like an escher painting. Or something from Portal.

I bought it for $5 in a bargain bin. My friend and I played it two player (one pilot, one gunner) and it was in that terrible-fun category for years.

That IS the Sonic Hoobastank song!

See, I had heard THIS before and thought it was the Hoobastank song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKjOJuPjiu4
This song is bad and too slow for Sonic music
Looks like it's actually by some band called Dangerkids though?

I think they mean Terranigma
Well Shining force were pretty much 2d affairs
The game got weird even for Japan
It's a lich
hooters being a multicultural touchstone makes me want to lie down tho
