I just don't imagine it doing well. I mean, yeah, sure, the last one made money. But it also released 6 years ago when 3D was a neat new novelty thing, and now it ain't.
I'm mostly interested to see how an Avatar sequel does now that 3D isn't a big magical thing anymore
Because despite the fact that the movie was four hours long and made all the money I couldn't tell you anything substantive about that film if you held a gun to my head
Luke Skywalker is a household name
Lieutenant McWhoosits and Blue Cat Lady are not

Hopefully this time around James Cameron will hire scriptwriterS.

People still fork out tons of money to see Transformers every couple years
People will turn out to see Cameron flicks in spades because he's well known for turning out some really good stuff. People fucking loved Avatar, and not just because of the 3D. His experience in directing sequels is also above average, giving us Aliens and Judgement Day.

It's still a big thing. It's just bad because the production houses are riding on the wave of people expecting 3D to be good after Avatar, and they decide to do it in post-production rather than pay out for the equipment to shoot in 3D.
It isn't going away because the movie companies can charge movie-goers larger fees for 3D and they can charge theaters twice for each movie (once for the standard and once for the 3D).

I don't think an avatar sequel will do as well as the original
but it doesn't have to, it will still do just fine
which is a goddamn shame because that movie was garbage

People saw Avatar because it was advertised as this amazing 3D experience and you HAVE to see it. Very few people know or care who directs what and what that means.

Tons of people care! This is a demonstrable fact! If it didn't matter, you would not have movies being marketed on 'from the person who brought you X'.

I saw Avatar once, and that was enough. If I were to ever watch it again, I'd have to turn it off after the destruction of Hometree, that way I can pretend it has a happy ending.

Probably won't see either of those till after Episode 8 - doing anything that takes place before TFA wouldn't make much sense, doing anything after would probably spoil some of the plot for 8.
Rey has probably gotten into her fair share of trouble growing up on Jakku so I'm hoping for a short three issue mini series or something along those lines.

Ah yes, the typical "destruction of the native people's home and way of life" happy ending. You can have them raise the american flag at the end.

i think you would. how do i know this?
"from the studio that brought you Ice Age!"
Maybe not the best example, since the Ice Age series is actually a very successful childrens series. It's made nearly 3 billion dollars across 4 films. That's exceptional for a film that is pretty laser focused on young children.

Of all the transgressions of Avatar, the thing that still bugs me the most is that they could not come up with something better than "unobtainium". What, was "hardtofindinite" taken?

Also, people definitely loved Avatar for more than just the 'wow' visuals. Highly visual movies tend to have huge starts then fizzle out quickly. With the money Avatar made, an awful lot of people had to go see it multiple times.

Big part of the success of Avatar seemed to be derived from how it was promoted as some sort of technical marvel and everybody went nuts for 3D.
Now that we're past that and actually have to look at the story and characters, I expect Avatar II to do well but it's definitely not going to the be the first one all over again.

Is that better or worse than the white guy swooping in to combine his whiteness with the native's knowledge - which he absorbs in a week - so that he can rise up and be the best of them because white

Wait, I take it back.
The worst thing about Avatar was when it basically turned an episode of Bones (which I'm not sure why I keep watching that show in the first place) into an hour long wankfest commercial for the movie.

I know that 2 years is totally reasonable for the scope, budget and care that will likely be put into that movie
But damn if I'm not thinking "BUT I WANT IT NOOOOOOOOOOOW"
Although it will probably make for a better movie.
I'd absolutely believe it. You cannot afford a dip in quality after Abrams salvaged the franchise.
And it's probably schadenfreude but I'd be quite giddy to see Star Wars smoke out an Avatar sequel
...
Why?
They are making three Avatar sequels
Because it made an insane amount of money
A license to print money is a license to print money, man.

I never saw it in theaters because 3d hurts my eyes.
I bought some of those 2d glasses to take to the theater in case I can't get into a 2d showing.
Yeah me too. What was the original schedule?
Here's a synopsis.

It was not invented for the movie. It's a reference to old science fiction parlance, which was itself a reference to 1950s aerospace engineering.
