The adaptive quality setting is so good I am able to set things to 3K with some high settings and getting 55-60FPS solidly, even in The Settlement/Towns. I am now a happy camper.

On what hardware? Might be useful for others to know if they are running something similar :)

Right, my bad. Running a 5700/i5-8400/16G. Everything in game set to HIGH, except for Shadows at Medium; DoF and Motion Blur have both been turned off. At 3K (3200X1800, 90% resolution scale - 2560-1440 at 100% gives a solidly stable 60) I'm not noticing a hard crash in resolution (playing from couch on 60INCH) or discernable looks, this is even having raided a monestary.

Playing at 4K/30 was good and all, but this is absolutely a "compromise" I'm willing to make. Game is so much more weighty now.

If you're in Norway and going to the Northern Peninsula you can get to that first synch spot without encountering anything if you hit the beach due south of the peak and climb up the face. You also get easy access to a cairn, which doing both of those will net you 2 skill points for about 5 minutes work.

If you do see a wolf or bear, run your ass away as they will swat you like a giant in Skyrim launching you to Cyrodil with it's club.

If you haven't already, I highly recommend turning Volumetric Clouds lower than high as well. It barely effects your moment to moment play experience but is a massive performance drain.

I do have to say some of the finishers are brutal as fuck. Like AC Odyssey was ugly, but ma dude hooked a dude in the pits, kicked him backwards and then threw two axes into him. Eivor is like "ain't no kill like overkill"

I had a curb stomp execution earlier. It was in the middle of tall grass so I couldn't see much of the animation until it zoomed in on Eivor tossing a guard face first onto a rock and stomping the hell outta his head. Felt extra brutal since I couldn't see any of the execution until the surprise stomp

Honestly, this game seems to run better at max/ultra settings in 4K than Odyssey did, on my 2080 Ti. Full HDR and everything.

I’m worried something isn’t set right?

What’s your expectation of “better”? I’m running the same setup on a 3080 and getting 45 to 55 FPS, but that doesn’t really bother me because G-Sync.

A few nights ago, I did belatedly discover that my display has to be running at 98Hz for true 10-bit HDR (after having owned it for over a year). Real HDR vs. dithered HDR seems to cost me about 3 to 5 FPS.

What's your resolution scaling at in the settings? It seemed to default to 60% for me. My 2080 Ti couldn't do 4k at 100% resolution scaling, max settings, and maintain over 60 FPS. At 1440p/100% resolution it can handle it, but not full 4K at what I consider a reasonable frame rate.

John VIII was fairly legit as 9th century popes go. Fast forward 15 years to Formosus (the only of his name, papally that means you done fucked up) and he pissed off enough people between Italy, Francia, and Constantinople that they exhumed his corpse and put it on trial.

Out of curiosity, what's the cutest animal you've killed so far?
I just got to England, and for me, it's either the arctic fox or the puffin. I kicked the fox to death from my horse, and felt really bad about it. Took three kicks, too. :bigfrown:

Something weird happened, playing on series x and for some reason the combat ai turned itself off, or maybe the stealth ai? Like enemies were running around, but none of them were noticing me or fighting back, I was very confused with that dude in the bear cave because he kinda just stumbled around instead of being a tough fight

Think I got a cue to hunt deer for that quest in an area...
...in the forest west of the legendary elk but east of the strait between Stavanger and the mainland. It was just a quick prompt and I wasn't paying close attention, but after I looked around I noticed that there were indeed a lot of bucks prancing around.

I think part of the problem is confusion on what you are suppose to kill, as I believe there are also elk on top of reindeer in Norway, and they can look a whole heck of a lot alike when your desparate to find anything that has antlers. Reindeer (aka Caribou) are one of the only species of deer where the females have antlers too, so if "buck" looks like the does running around but with antlers, it's probably not a reindeer.

I found it easier doing it in England (specifically Leicestershire), as the regular deer bucks can't be mistaken for reindeer, so it only took about 3 or 4 kills there to get the last two antlers for that hunter back home.

Question about the modern day stuff for anyone that knows the story a little better, since I've only played seven of these games for hundreds of hours over the last decade.
Is this the first time Shaun and Rebecca have been back since Layla became the protagonist? I remember they were in Syndicate during a bunch of cutscenes, but I don't remember anything with them in Origins or Odyssey.

I did my first anomaly last night and it was genuinely the first time ever when playing an assassin’s creed game, and honestly possibly the first time playing a video game ever, where I legitimately felt a real world sense of terror. It was like watching one of those dash cam videos of someone biking down a mountain or something.

Geforce experience wants to set some very odd settings for Valhalla. World details and environment textures to medium and vsync off, but clutter, depth of field, shadows, and volumetric clouds all to very high.

That'll get me worse performance and worse graphics, thanks nvidia!

HardwareUnboxed did a good video breakdown of each setting and their impact on the game. With that advice, I'm running at 60% 4k at 60 FPS on a 1080 GTX.

Having played all AC base games, it appears the answer is yes, but I have no idea why and/or if it’s explained—hoping it will be in Valhalla, unless it’s one of those “oh you needed to play all the DLC from the previous game and/or buy this supplemental graphic novel to understand what happened” deals

I haven't played an ac since like brotherhood I think? But this one came with my GPU.

so uh, looks like there's been a lot of changes. It's all gear and RPG numbers and i don't have a "click button to assassinate" type of thing at least yet.

also I did what the game told we was called a "stun attack." I kicked the person in the back, cut off both their arms at once, and put my axe into their head... Stunned.

Also it feels like they've super streamlined climbing to the point of "this isn't a puzzle anymore, it's Hold Up" which is honestly kinda a bummer.

There's a couple spots where they use ice to make climbing a little more difficult than hold up, in the first area the western most gold dot comes to mind, but not many.

There's a part of me that misses the old climbing puzzles where you had to figure out the correct route to the top, but the current system does a lot to make you feel free when it comes to exploring all over the game world.

The issue I had in the past and why I disliked that particular chest was they suck at enviromental story telling so a lot of the time its guess work or luck to get through some of those old jumping puzzles. Hell sometimes I'd die in the older AC games because the controls or view fucked me.

It’s okay, they’ve just replaced “how do I climb to that” with “oh for gods sake yes I see it on the map but where’s the actual door to the secret tunnel to get to it oh goddamit it’s on the OTHER side of the mountain well shit”

    Wait... what?

So when we're leaving for England:
Two of Harald's greenshirts come up and say Eivor killed some soldiers nearby. And Eivor says yeah they talked shit and I killed them over it. Then they demand 50 silver for each death.

... but that never happened? When did that happen? One dude greeted her at the dock and then we went to her brother's rally and then we're here leaving. She didn't kill anyone.
