Micro SD Cards

So, I heard a rumor that 2 gig micro-SD cards are very unreliable, and have a tendency to get corrupted or stop working.

Is this true? Should I just get a 1 gig from newegg for my new phone, or go for the 2 gig?

side question: where can I find the codec sound so I can turn it into a ringtone?

My brother's been using the same micro-SD 2gig card in his SK3 for the last 5 months without any stability issues.

I've got a 2 gig Kingston for my DS. I've had no problems at all.

I've had it for about 3-4 months.

2 gig cards generally have slower access times, but unless you're using it for DS homebrew or something you probably won't be able to tell.

If you end up with a pirated card off of eBay, yeah, you'll have problems. Buy one the next time Fry's has a 2GB one for $35 and you'll just have to deal with slow access times (not a concern for MP3 and ringtones). Me? I just loaded up on 1GB Kingston ones from Buy.com a few days ago ($5 after rebate, two per address). Fry's has $15 Patriot 1GB MicroSD + MiniSD adapter + SD adapter (unsure whether the SD adapter adapts mini or microSD, but the other adapter means that it doesn't matter).

Actually there has been quite a few complaints about >1GB microSD cards a few months back, but it was mostly related to the actual device itself not being able to address more than 1GB correctly. I would check to see if the phone has a firmware problem with large microSD cards or is incompatible with certain manufacturers.

As for your codec ringtones, take your pick:

    MGS Codec: http://unangelic.org/stupidlogic/uploads/codec.wav
    MGS3 Codec: http://rapidshare.com/files/27272701/MGS3codec.mp3.html

Can you believe the size of these memory cards? It's totally unreal. Who ever would have thought that they'd get two gigs of storage into a card the size of your fingernail? My first hard drive didn't have 1/200ths that much storage, and it was about two hundred times larger!

I'm new at this phone business, so I'm glad this topic came up.

I'm about to buy a MicroSD card for my new phone (old one couldnt do shit). I want to put some music on it. Do I need to get some kind device to transfer that, since my laptop doesn't have a MicroSD slot of any kind? Or can I do that kind of transfer via Bluetooth?

Whether you can transfer by Bluetooth depends on the phone, but most microSD cards come with an adapter to make it fit in a standard SD slot, if you've got one of those. If you don't have one of those either, you can get an SD card reader/writer for a few bucks at Newegg or similar sites.

I vouch for this man. After I got my phone, I updated the firmware. The update actually addressed this exact subject, adding support to 2 gigs. I have yet to get a 2 gig card though...don't exactly need a mass media device aside from my flash key or an mp3 player.

I have the codec as my ringtone too. Might check those out, since mine frankly sounds a bit thin.

I followed the link in my brother's email that says "$4.95 after $5 rebate" but I can't find any mention of it after following it. The Buy.com website doesn't seem to have a way to look up old rebates either. He's got it printed somewhere, so I'll take a look when I can. There's no rebate on the Fry's one, though it is a couple bucks more expensive online (search outpost.com for 5162826 or grab it in-store).

Also, thanks for the MGS Codec!

Why not? As long as we're not using excessive amounts of copyright materials, it isn't any different than a DJ "sampling". Hell, they get away with taking 30 second clips from songs, this isn't anywhere near that bad. Not to mention, it's for personal (not profit) use.

I dont know if I originally came here with my problem, but i had gotten a 2gig (sandisk) one for homebrew on my DSlite, and the line of thinking was that if i get the ftp software on there, i load up the software and can move all my files by the homebrew ftp program. 5 minutes after i open the sd card and run the ftp program, crash, card dies. Lets just say after a RMA to sandisk i wont mess with file manipulation homebrew software anymore.

TL;DR: 1st card died in 5 minutes, but i cant tell if it was unreliable or the software borked it. Got another, it has worked fine for probably 6 months.

There was a ringtone thread at somepoint. Actually I think it was a .midi and .wav sound bit from videogames, but then again they had lists of ways to send e-mail's to your cell phone to get said midis and wavs from teh internets. Its long gone tho but it helped me get many mario/zelda/FF clips onto my phone.

    Sweet, sweet "HEY! LISTEN!" action!

Not very good quality, not the greatest "mix" either, but it's all I could find. That link will only stay up for 7 days, so someone might want to rehost.

Also, this is pretty much everything mario & zelda related:

Grabbed the mario OneUp sound to use as a text message received :-)

I assure you it wasn't the software. Sandisk cards are notoriously shitty. I've got a Kingston MicroSD and I've been using DSFTP for a lot of stuff now because I don't want to risk losing a card the size of my fingernail.

Besides, if you can't even reformat the card to get it to work, it was a defective card, no matter what software you've used with it.

Thats what I figured personally, but then I still got to slap myself for messing with homebrew software thats meant to do file transfer like that and not expect something like that if the program crashes.

Nonetheless, even if the software is deliberately malicious it should never screw up the card so bad it can't be reformatted. If the card can't be reformatted then it's the card that's defective, end of story.

Sorry, but this is incorrect. Repeated reads and writes will kill flash memory. It's why they have a rated number of rewrites. I've killed two Memory Stick Pro Duo cards by following PSP homebrew instructions that say things to the effect of "Your PSP is not locked up. DO NOT TURN OF YOUR PSP OR YOU WILL BE SORRY!" and then subsequently leaving them running overnight (I knew something was wrong, but each time the program had just enough of a "do NOT turn off the power!" scare-factor to make me believe that it was the best choice. Besides, a rapidly blinking access light surely indicates that it's not locked up, right? RIGHT? This has happened with different applications. The third one that I encountered like this probably would have done it again if I hadn't learned my lesson from the last two.
