To log in to Destiny for an event that I prolly wont find fun, or not to log in to Destiny for an event that I prolly wont find fun. That is the question.
Whether it is nobler to suffer the whims of Bungo's torrid matchmaking engine or to take arms in Halo 5 or Warframe and have a better time.
To face red bar opponents and meta snipers, the heartache and the thousand natural shocks that this game is heir to. 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished. To play something else, to not play Destiny... ay, there's the rub.
For in playing Halo 5 or Warframe what loot will I miss out on?
a 308 Light ghost, no doubt.

... I didnt even get a Ghost yet, so you are more likely to be missing out on 1 shader and nothing else, unless you play for a long ass time today.

Bungo will say in a week's time "lol we messed up the drop rates on the ghosts there was supposed to be a 1% chance but we accidentally made 0.01%" we'll fix it for next year.

Crimson Doubles is surprisingly fun. It's a neat twist on regular Doubles, has the format of Trials without the pressure, and it's a good excuse to dust off some of my older guns. I had a lot of success with my Summoner and was happy I still had my Tomorrow's Answer. The special ammo changes gave me a reason to try out sidearms more seriously.
It also made for a good loot haul. Tonight I got both new shaders, both new ghosts, three (great) emotes, a horn kit, and rank one in Doubles grimoire.

It's definitely something different. The first few games were kind of rough, adjusting to the no special and also the doubles mindset. It took me and Hermano a good 3-4 games before we started being pretty decent at the mode. The event itself isn't too bad and you don't even have to do it if you don't want to. It's all cosmetic stuff so really, do it if you want to try something new in PvP.
One thing I will say however, it brought out some of the worst players out there on PS4. I have 400ish games of Trials and I have never been teabagged as often in those 400 games as I have with the Crimson Doubles in a single evening. It was actually quite disappointing. I got a Bond of the Tilt out of it, which I found hilarious!
The special ammo change was quite refreshing. It made a lot of the battles much more interesting and hectic. The doubles matches are faster, so some games I don't think anyone got special ammo in the whole thing! I am definitely interested in seeing those changes in Trials. It will definitely force people to adapt. I know I pulled out my shotgun with no ammo a couple of times. That muscle memory!
Finally, Sunsingers with Voidfang Vestment is absolutely broken in this playlist. Like, if you want to go in there and do nothing but win, get your teammate to use Thorn and go Sunsinger with Voidfang / Burn grenades. It's sickeningly effective. I can see it getting tweaked / nerfed down the road, and I say this as the dude that was cackling like a madman when 2 people were burning to his grenades!

I just wish there was some "higher" incentive to actually do the mode. It's decently fun (not really any more so than any other pvp for me personally) but Once you have done the weekly (or 3), got the shaders (which is easily doable with luck in a single evening) the only reason you have to keep playing the mode is for a very slim chance at a ghost drop with a slim chance of it being 320.
I personally like having little things to work towards. IB its the ranks with some sort of guaranteed reward, trials its a shot at something good out of the gold package. With Crimson Doubles though my only consistent reward is legendary engrams that give me items I will immediately shard for marks (which I really don't need).
I dunno, don't get me wrong, the mode isn't bad I just want a little something "more", a slightly better carrot at the end.

Jrofl and I ran a few matches on the event last night and it seemed to go decently well. First match I wound up getting the Sugary Shell but it was only 311 and was INT/STR when I would have preferred a INT/DIS.
Match wise I think we only had two that we got steam-rolled on. One we did kind of blow the other team away as they just kept going the same route every time so we obliged them with kills. A couple of really close matchups and as we went I thought we were starting to gel pretty well (I absolutely sucked for the first half of the matches if not more and for that I'm so sorry ). But once we got our groove it worked pretty well for us.
Though I will admit, there were a few teabaggers and at the end of one match a guy popped special, then teabagged, then started dancing on top of our corpses.

Not sure what kind of carrot would work for me to be honest. I know I've beaten Destiny. I got all the things I could want. I don't give a crap about hitting 320. I have all the sets for all the classes. I can't be assed to finish of the last 2 swords, but I have every other exotics. Hell, most of them fully leveled up at 310+.
I just feel I played Destiny way too much and got everything done, but I just try to keep playing things even though I don't fully enjoy them. The only good time I have is in Trials (when we're not too sleepy). I don't even reaaally care about going to the Lighthouse. I just wanna shoot some mans and make jokes in chat!

I blame @squall99x for distracting me that time. Or really @Bolthorn for it. I thought we did somewhat well, and totally don't worry about your performance, I had fun, and I think you had fun as well (I hope!). I should be on later tonight (9ish EST) if you want to give it another go tonight. I need some of those sweet sweet emotes/shell/shaders.

I would but it looks like I'm probably going to be recording a podcast tonight. If things fall through though I'll be sure to pop on and hit you up with an invite.
Yeah! If you don't like a set of rolls a particular week just don't hand it in. On that note I may finally take that PDX-41 order. First roll looks decent.
I gotta actually log in to do it though UGH. why can't I do this shit from the app? Fuck Destiny.

I don't think you're allowed to blame me when I'm not even logged in.
I'm debating about trying to play some doubles for a chance at a 320 shell or just keep hoping one drops from the raid. Maybe if I don't get one on the raid tomorrow night I'll spend some time with it this weekend.

Crimson doubles is pretty fun! The broken heart buff plus last resort is downright nutso. Doctrine fires with zero recoil. Good games @Dyvim Tvar sorry I had to bail in the middle of a match.
Feel bad because I left you alone with a team of icebreakers!

They somehow got even sweatier when you left, it was actually pretty funny. I think it might be because I started dancing and then murdered one of them when he came over to pick the scraps.

I'm going to try out that Division open beta on the 19th and see how that goes. I feel like having 2-3 games that you just leapfrog content droughts with is best. I wanted to play Firewatch but apparently it's glitchy on PS4 with framerates. The only thing with those games is that it doesn't have the social aspect of Destiny, which I really like. Those Iron Banner 6 man parties are super fun because of it.
I even thought about turning WoW back on, I have so much gold in there I wouldn't even have to buy the sub with real money! That's how low I've gotten!
Raids do NOT need match-making.
-If they had it, I would never use it
-If they required it, I would never raid with randos
Destiny needs better socialization options.
If you're posting here, then you have all the social options that you need to raid. In fact, my express purpose in joining this community was to raid in Destiny - I can't begin to describe how my experiences have been enriched by the awesome people here.
Destiny could easily do the 'lower tier' version of raids that some MMO's do, to provide a way for everyone to participate in content, even if it's not the 'best' version of it. Have an easy version of Kings Fall that is matchmade, leave normal/hard alone, and have the easy version give nightfall-ish quality rewards, but not normal/hard mode drops.
This is cancer for your community. It will in its first week all but eliminate casual participation in raid communities, and you will realize how important that low level interest is for filling your hardcore raids.
Source: I helped run a community built around giving casual players access to raids in WoW, and interest dropped 80%+ after LFR was released, despite us offering access to harder content.
But the game itself was healthier. WoW lasted 10 years, Destiny is puttering to a stop in under 2.
I would argue that Destiny "puttering to a stop" is a function of content and not community.
Personal anecdote:
I am antisocial (it's not that I can't socialize, it's that social interactions are be forced to demanding for me - it does not come naturally). I don't like randoms. When WoW released LFR (Cataclysm?) I was not in a raiding guild. LFR had shiny carrots matchmaking.that I wanted (gear), but I hated most of the experiences I had in that setting. Fast forward to the next expansion (Mists), and I motivate myself to be recruited by a raiding guild between the 1st and 2nd raid content releases. I was a core member of a progression raiding guild (1st on a small server, but not bleeding edge) for 5 months - it was some of the most fun I ever had in WoW. After seeing how awesome raiding can be, it was impossible to go back to LFR (both during and after that raid group collapsed). I quit the game shortly after (not because of the raid group disbanding, but because of the direction of the game).
Destiny raiding is as good or better than WoW raiding ever was for me. I am vehemently against Bungie (in my opinion) wasting resource on a watered-down raid experience with match-making when there is high-octane awesome that's already there.
That's great that you are against it because you have fun with high level raiding. Not everyone does? And its great for you that you would never use matchmaking. Some people would.
Hell, every time anyone uses DestinyLFG to group for something...that's matchmaking. Its just clumsy matchmaking that would be much better if you could do it in-game. Personally nearly all my time in Nightfalls and Trials is through LFG because I have a very odd schedule.
Wanting players to be forced to play a certain way because you enjoy it is not a very good stance.

Personally nearly all my timer in Nightfalls and Trials is through LFG.
Wanting players to be forced to play a certain way because you enjoy it is not a very good stance.
Yeah... DestinyLFG (and similar services) are just matchmaking with a middleman.

I doubt I'd use matchmaking for raids (because I already have a team ready each week, most people dont have that), I consider Bungie fools for not adding it in, just as an option to the existing structure.
Peoples/Bungies argument against matchmaking for everything is just some weirdly disconnected stuff, "They'd have a bad time" and "They would never get far" ... DestinyLFG is basically what Bungie failed to ever do.
And DestinyLFG works. Not all the time and its not perfect - But its trying, in contrast Bungie just goes "LOL GET SOME FRIENDS HOMIE!?" ... Which is an amateurish response for a company.
I'd probably do Nightfalls with matchmaking occasionally, the NF is basically just a glorified Weekly Heroic with some extra modifiers right now anyways.

I would hypothesize that the barrier of entry of using DestinyLFG or forums makes these PuG far better than what you find in an automated project such as WoW Looking-for-Raid.
I played WoW a lot and I used LFR some towards the middle of Mist of Pandaria. It's a crapshoot. On top of the content being laughably nerfed, people are bad. Insanely bad. 4-5 folks out of the 25 are doing all the work. Face a single wipe, 2-3 of those 4-5 folks leave the group and go away. Kill a boss and folks didn't get the drop they wanted, they drop out of the group too. It's all automated. Nobody talks. Honestly, it's a loot run where people want to go get their stuff and log out.
It's personal experience and purely anecdotal, but LFR really wasn't enjoyable. It was just something I HAD to suffer through cause it was the only way I could get loot at the time. I will also put forward that WoW has been bleeding subs very quickly and more and more ever since automated matchmaking has been put into the game. It likely has hundreds of dozen reasons for why it's been bleeding subs very quickly. I would also propose that it's likely the sub levels are remaining at what they are because people who have invested 4,6,10 years into a game are less likely to call it quits.
It'd be awesome if Bungie could implement, in-game, stuff to make it easier to create a PuG. Bulletin boards to post that you are looking for a group for X,Y,Z activity. Anything really. I'm not sure LFR and watered down content is the solution we need.

I have and will continue to state that Bungie needs better community tools, so let's not take my statements out of context, please. The fact that LFG sites exist (and arguably need to exist) is testament enough of Bungie's deficiency in that regard.
I'm stating my opinion that I enjoy what Bungie has done well to this point (raids), and that I don't want those parts of the game to change focus/implementation. Why should defending a status-quo that I like be bad? They have a habit of changing core aspects of activities without allowing options (e.g. Weekly forcing match-making, no option for solo or 2-man fireteams).

I didnt play WoW that late (stopped before Lich King) so I havent experienced LFR, but why would Destiny need to water down the raid experience for matchmaking? Fuck that, its supposed to be a tool to find a group, not a free handout of easy loot.
It would of course need to be an advanced form of matchmaking for the raid that takes actual work to create and flesh out, which Bungie does not seem interested in doing, you could just get some friends and make their job easier right?!
EDIT: Intended for people who are unfamiliar with WoW and/or LFR.
Short background:
WoW introduced LFR (Looking For Raid) as a means of allowing more casual players and non-raiders to experience their raids. Why should they (Blizzard) spend so much time on unique art assets and gear and etc etc if only the top 5% of players ever saw the end-game content?
Players are required to meet certain gear requirements (think Light Level), but then they could queue into match-making after selecting their role (tank, healer, DPS) - the system would gather players together based on these roles and create a group (i.e. fireteam) and teleport everyone to the LFR raid, which was different from the "normal" version in various key aspects.
- you can't assume voice comms, so major mechanics/call-outs need to be very obvious
- you can't assume prior knowledge of encounters/mechanics, so difficult is severely nerfed
The idea is that you could get a group of completely green players who have never seen the raid and can't communicate quickly (text chat is there), assuming they have a certain level of gear, and that you can assume within some margin that they can complete all the (nerfed) encounters.
For the most part, it was a success. Non-raiders got to see the raids, they got to collect slightly lower-than-normal-level loot, and Blizz could continue to justify their PvE end-game.
The problem, as is usually the case, is that people are people (see the Greater Internet Dickwad Theory).
- people could queue as tank and play in DPS spec
- people could intentionally sabotage raid groups in various ways (both trash and bosses)
- people would complain about the difficulty (too easy or too hard)
- people could do X, Y, or Z, etc ad infinitum

Whether it is nobler to suffer the whims of Bungo's torrid matchmaking engine or to take arms in Halo 5 or Warframe and have a better time.
To face red bar opponents and meta snipers, the heartache and the thousand natural shocks that this game is heir to. 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished. To play something else, to not play Destiny... ay, there's the rub.
For in playing Halo 5 or Warframe what loot will I miss out on?
... I didnt even get a Ghost yet, so you are more likely to be missing out on 1 shader and nothing else, unless you play for a long ass time today.
God of War, the SRL one, now this?
I just wish there was a nice glossy Candy Apple Red one.
I want to look like a midlife crisis sports car.
God of War gets shiny on some armor pieces, it's the closest you'll get I think

It also made for a good loot haul. Tonight I got both new shaders, both new ghosts, three (great) emotes, a horn kit, and rank one in Doubles grimoire.

OG Week 1 Thesan Roll here, what what~
It's definitely something different.
Match wise I think we only had two that we got steam-rolled on. One we did kind of blow the other team away as they just kept going the same route every time so we obliged them with kills. A couple of really close matchups and as we went I thought we were starting to gel pretty well (I absolutely sucked for the first half of the matches if not more and for that I'm so sorry

Feel bad because I left you alone with a team of icebreakers!

They somehow got even sweatier when you left, it was actually pretty funny. I think it might be because I started dancing and then murdered one of them when he came over to pick the scraps.
Well, if you don't get one tomorrow, I'd be down for doubles.
You can be my wingman anytime :winky:
I agree, and I have no idea what kind of carrot it could be either. I just like having little goals for myself that I can work towards. The only reason I want a 320 ghost is just so I can max out one character for the sake of saying I did it. It will, of course, have no actual effect on my game play.
