yes, most delicious things in life are just a collection of simpler ingredients

it would be weird if there were a naturally occurring element called "cheddar bay biscuit"

Mined in the deep shafts of Maine's Cheddar Bay.

    Yeah

At this point its basically a slur against anyone with a drawl

No it's a perfect synonym for a idiot redneck which Sarah Palin (whom does not speak with a drawl) most certainly is.

    Ok well

I am telling you, as a southerner, that it is very often used as a slur against people from the south and I would appreciate it if you didn't use it

It is of course your right to ignore that but its become a pretty hurtful word in the past 5 or 6 years

Y'know, I'll agree with you that it sucks to be called a hick or a redneck cause you got some twang. And I agree that it does write off a very broad group of people in a geographical location and I've made the very same argument as you have

    But if Palin isn't a hick, she's certainly a slack-jawed yokel

    i agree!

You know what this reminded me of though? I know there has been some talk of the white equivalent of BET in earlier pages, and we have that. It's called CMT. And CMT has the worst offerings of reality tv that glorify redneck stupidity at its best.

Is this a personal thing? Or is my region just weird?

Cus hick is kinda worn with pride around these parts. Hillbilly and redneck too.

Actually one of my favorite writers had a quote about it that I quite enjoy.
“Alas, then, I also am not a hillbilly. I am too educated to be a hillbilly. Like the lawyer who gives up his career to write crime novels or the doctor who gives up practicing in order to write medical novels, I forfeit my hillbilliness in order to write novels about hillbillies. It is some consolation that certain characteristics of hillbillies - fierce independence, shyness coupled with loquacity, a wry if not sardonic sense of humor - remain in my bloodstream, remain in my genes, and permit me never to forget what it is like being a hillbilly, at the same time that the deprive me of complete objectivity about hillbillies. I can’t laugh at hillbillies because I am still laughing too hard with them.”

Hick is pretty universally an insult, mostly at southerners by northerners or those from urban areas

I have definitely heard hillbilly or redneck used with pride though

I once had a guy argue at me why he wasn't a redneck, when I'd called him white trash.

Which, while it carries some overlap, is not exactly a redneck synonym.

that's a good analogy for the american south. friendly on the outside, because the threat of violence is so close to the surface.

It's a pretty lazy insult as insults go and doesn't exactly carry a lot weight behind it. 'Slur' is pretty fucking reaching.

Speaking as a dude who has basically lived in Alabama all his life.

I think American to American in America it doesnt carry much weight, but if any other nationality said it to an American it would be considered a slur. On my vacation in Europe there were a few kids from Australia who used it and made fun of the way the Americans talked in the group. I considered that offensive.

As someone who lives in small town Arkansas I think that's a slight exaggeration. It definitely exists in certain circles sure. But to say it's the general attitude is a bit much.

Now weaponizing niceties? "Well bless your heart," can be uttered with more acid than almost any insult.

I don't see how Death Wish comes into it, but New Yorkers are indeed frequently dirtbags who would sooner spit on you than give you directions to the nearest subway station.

Yeeaaaah. Like there's definitely violence in certain areas. Specifically ones around meth culture. But to say that's the norm is pretty not true. It's also generally avoidable.

You don't want to get in trouble with the long arm of the drawl.

But seriously I think hick is a fairly mild and inoffensive word. Were someone to call me a hick I'd probably laugh in their face at how lukewarm an insult it is. It's mostly just that people with strong southern drawls are stereotyped as being unintelligent/uneducated which is unfortunate but pretty separate from that one word. And I mean we don't have it as bad as folks that use AAVP.

Linguistic discrimination is still one of the biggest forms of discrimination in the US.
