CNN: Manatees set for removal from endangered species list

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed to remove the West Indian manatee from the endangered species list and reclassify it as "threatened" after "significant improvements" in its population and habitat conditions.

The portly creatures were among the first species added to the list in 1972. There were only an estimated 1,267 manatees in Florida when the service began aerial surveys of the population in 1991. Today, there are more than 6,300 in Florida, a 500% increase in the species population in the state, the service said.

Are speedboat injuries still a big issue for manatees? I remember seeing an episode of Kratt's Kreatures back in the day where they were talking about that and showing manatees with propeller scars and it really upset young me.

I predict that they'll become an even bigger problem, now that manatees are REPRODUCING OUT OF CONTROL, AND WILL SOON TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!!

speed limits are now extremely strictly enforced in a lot of populous boating areas in florida. i would say its certainly less of a problem now than 30 years ago

i think manatees biggest challenge is they don't mate very much so it takes a long time to repopulate

So apparently this is not an actual good thing; it's been pushed through WAY WAY prematurely because boaters and fishermen are angry at all the protection zone laws. An additional 5000 manatees over 20 years is not actually enough to take them off the endangered list.

Yeah this is all kinds of bullshit. Being taken off the protection list may actually be a death sentence for the species. It wouldn't surprise me if they are wiped out within the decade.

there's more driving protection zones than manatees

a lot of manatee habitats are also open water marinas and channels with waterfront properties that will be no-wake zones for eternity

there will always be safe places for manatees

maybe but the manatees do not by default know where they are
