Finding Nerdy Friends in Victoria

Hey guys,

Looking for some help from anyone that's familiar with Victoria BC. First, background, I've recently come out to the island to get sort of a new start in a new city. I'm a recent undergraduate and didn't have a whole lot tying me down so I thought I'd try my luck in what I've heard is one of the loveliest cities in the country. And from my short time here, I am definitely pumped to be here, it's heading into week two of January and there isn't a single flake of snow on the ground.

The problem however, is that I don't know anyone out here. Apartment hunting and finding a job to pay the bills, that's all fine. It sucks as much as it will always suck, and that's okay I've got a long fuse burning on those. But not having anyone around to just hang out with or talk to is turning out to be super lonely. many of my friend circles were formed in schools, through class, or from friends of friends. And I don't actually have any of those connections out here to branch out from. As I'm sure many can relate to here, I'm very much a nerd, and long for nerdy discussions on film or games, or graphic novels. I also don't particularly like drinking, and though I've tried a couple of bars out here, I don't drink and I don't really mix there or find it easy to relate to and get to know folks in bars. And I mean no offense to people who frequent bars, it's very much a personal preference on my half.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I have no idea how to make new friends as a new twenty something. Anyone from Victoria know of any nerdy hangouts, weekly or monthly events that go on? Any sort of groups or clubs I could check out? I'd be greatly appreciative.

Have you checked out curious comics on Johnson downtown and around the corner from them on I think broad back toward the baycenter is curious' game store. There was 14 years ago a not bad size group of rpga players that husband and I were a part of. But yeah check in curious as my info is mostly 12 years old now. Bolen books out in hillside mall may be able to steer you to current goings on.

Hope you like Vic. We loved it there and our daughter was born there. Unfortunately we are up in Powell River now but hello and welcome to the wet coast.

Meetup.com should help, it's pretty much how i made my circle of friends after moving to Dallas.

There should hopefully be some good groups you can join, like film discussion groups or board games ones. I would definately recommend branching out and joining groups that just seem interesting/fun as well.

Not sure if this is remotely within your interests, but I know there is a school up there that teaches German Longsword among other things. If you are remotely interested in sword fighting you should check it out. Lots of geeky, nerdy people to meet there.

Cool, thanks for the suggestions guys. The local games shops have met me with some cool folks, Curious Comics and Yellow Jacket up the road have been great! I'll have to check out the sites you listed too, see who else I can meet out here :)
