Man its so great but weird that Bowie likes "new" stuff instead of getting trapped in his youth like a lot of people do. Although not surprising really.
...You don't think anybody should be tributing Bowie? That's kind of silly.
I tend to prefer montage tributes - artists' work speaking for itself. I don't think I know of a single cover-based tribute that I actually enjoyed. Just ain't my cup of tea.
A cover tribute to Bowie should be like 8 songs and have the most disparate collection of groups and genres imaginable, just to highlight what a wide range he covered
I wanna see like, St. Vincent, The Replacements, Janelle Monae, Boards of Canada, Kendrick Lamar, and Ministry up there

StraightziHere we may reign secure, and in my choice,To reign is worth ambition though in HellRegistered Userregular
Everyone who ever did any sort of duet or collaboration with Bowie comes on stage and does their part of the song
Y'know, Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, Trent Reznor
Nobody does Bowie's part
No replacement, no tribute, just one big aching hole
I used to be all indignant about Lady Gaga and always would say "She's just ripping off David Bowie!" to everyone.
But then I saw her interviewed and she was like "Im just doing what David Bowie did." and was kind of surprised that she totally admitted it and heaped praise on him for allowing her to do this by breaking down those barriers. So now I'm fine with her.
In reality though, it should be Seu Jorge. Bowie loved those covers. He said:
"Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese, I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.”

Do they have to be dead to qualify? Because the cover of Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy center honors by heart is the best version of Stairway

That's just a cover, to me. A damn fine one (I've seen Heart do it live, and it slayed), but it feels different than a tribute to a dead person, for a reason I can't fully articulate. Maybe it's that, to me, a cover is, "I like this song, and I'm gonna put my own spin on it." Performing a cover as a tribute feels - to me, and it's just my own weird hangup - like someone going, "I like this song, and I'm gonna put such a good spin on it that it honors the dead." It strikes me as oddly self-aggrandizing and focus-pulling.
But I'm likely in the minority on that, and that's fine. I ain't gonna judge anybody who's into 'em, they're just not my jam.

Today, I'm really into Low.
Especially these two tracks
It's great.
If you like Bowie you should really watch it.
The whole thing was an ensemble piece, a lot of super short plays, and one of the plays called "Ashes to Ashes. Dust to Stardust."
One of the actresses walked on stage, put on a suit jacket, and blindfolded herself, and then just the vocal tracks to Under Pressure started up
And she just started dancing, in a dimly lit room, for the whole song
Like, really good, modern interpretative stuff, she was an incredible dancer
And man, I am glad it was dark in that theatre
It fucking wrecked me
Huh. Never really noticed how subtle Eno's synths were in that song. Beautiful.

This advice, man.
It's like, it's not BAD advice.
It's just
Not necessarily GOOD advice.

I'm not sure how I Feel about this. I mean, I like her but... Bowie.

I don't think she should be doing it, but mainly because I don't think anybody should be. It's nothing personally against her.
And it could be worse. Could've been, like, Green Day or something.

Well if there is anyone currently relevant that was clearly influenced by Bowie...it is her. So at least there is that,
Steam
I mean
I don't think that's true?
Like, yeah, she has some Bowie influences
But she's far from the only one

Still, I think there are much better options than her, but The Grammy's are kind of bullshit to begin with.
You'd have to find them first.
But anyway,
The best tribute to Bowie, or any other artist, is to explore their own work.
This kind of 'tribute' always feels more about those paying tribute than those being paid tribute.
He said:
Ideally, it would consist of Iggy, Eno, Carlos Alomar etc.
Who knows? Maybe it will
that's basically the pinnacle of tribute covers, I think
