So I've been slowly collecting Bowie albums on vinyl over the last year or so - mostly picking them up from www.eil.com . Of course after his death all stock instantly dried up & prices sky-rocketed; an extra sprinkling of selfish-annoyance over the sadness of his death there.
Anyway after a night of frantic eBaying I managed to score Station To Station and "Heroes" (Ruining at least one person's night by putting in my first bid ten seconds before the auction closed) at a decent price - I'm unreasonably excited about them arriving. Now I just need to get Diamond Dogs and I pretty much have all the essentials (Though that likely won't stop me getting any more I can snap up).
Actually, I also have to buy Lodger to complete the Berlin Trilogy and to have this masterpiece:
this is in addition to the rock band killed alongside their manager by a wrong way drunk driver in the US, and the UK alt band that drove off a bridge in Sweden......so 2016.....

I really wanted to like it. I'm serious. It just didn't fill me with any of the emotion that Bowie's songs actually make me feel.
I completely agree with this.
I have a lot of respect for Gaga, and she was a good choice for this...
But it just fell completely flat for me. I get that there's so much ground to cover with Bowie, but they really did just try to cram way too much in, and as a result didn't spend enough time on any one thing.
I honestly think that something simpler would have been better.
The performance was okay. It felt a little jumbled.

I think the spirit was there. There was no way she was pulling off the emotion and some of the vocals sounded like her trying to do an impression of David Bowie and that seemed pointless and off.
But the spirit and character of David Bowie was well represented and I think that was the most important thing.
The responses to that tweet are sure... something. A bunch of people (who I have to assume don't know who his dad is) getting mad at him for daring to insult the Good Intentions of Lady Gaga.

I've watched it a couple of times and I like it less and less with each watch.
The intent was to honor but she almost comes off like someone intentionally doing a bad impersonation. I would have rather she sung the songs in her own voice instead of trying to emulate Bowie.
I still believe in the intent and the spirit of the performance and I'm not sure who would have done a better job. I think she tried too hard to BE David Bowie instead of being Lady Gaga honoring David Bowie

Some of them absolutely do even
It's real weird
Yeah, I shouldn't imagine that the internet's enraged would be bothered by a trivial detail like that.
Who is he to decide what is or isn't a fitting tribute to his father. Bowie belonged to all of us, man, which means mostly just me.

Ultimately, I find the whole thing very... drag-y?
Like, it's got these very over-exaggerated impressions, it feels
And seems to be much more about the pageantry than anything else
Obviously this was partially to be expected, it's a tribute number at the Grammys
The medley was way too much, and it didn't feel like it had a ton of purposeful design to it
Like, it's just a popular songs medley, in which case it didn't need to have nearly as many songs as it did, especially given the sloppy chop jobs some of the songs received
If it had been like, one song from every album, I would have been more forgiving
But there was nothing from the past twenty years in there
The Intel advertising all around that was very, very off putting as well.
Yeah. The first video I saw of the performance cut those bits off, so I wasn't aware of the Intel plugs until re-watching it just now.
Wow. That's pretty tasteless.
Was there a reason his tribute had to be an Intel commercial as well?
Money.

I think it would have been better if it hadn't been a medley
Medleys are the worst thing and seem more appropriate for superbowl half time shows than a tribute
edit I think my ideal might have been a couple full songs but maybe not all at once? Pepper the entire evening with songs from the different ages of bowie

Part of the problem with medleys is they don't typically have the depth to get sad
They stay poppy and upbeat the whole time by rapidly oscillating between songs
This is a tribute to someone who has died, it should be sad
I want it to be one damn song that can make me break down and cry

I'm guessing that exact phrase was uttered to DMX today as well.

Yeah I felt like if it was a 45 minute long dedicated tribute it could have been great.
It felt rushed?
edit: But I fully understand that they have time limits and stuff, im not saying "why wasn't it longer than it was".
Maybe they should have just chosen one song.
you could have done three or so and would have gotten enough out of each to really make it work, I think
but
picking just three bowie songs is borderline impossible
Ugh... Vanity passing away is fucking me up.

I'm not naysaying anyone who got something out of that.
I can't shake the feeling that he would have hated it though.
