Help with Stress (w/ secondary problem: Nintendo DS repair)

SkyEyeSkyEye Registered User regular
First, some background. I recently went on a run and my DS Lite bottom screen display stopped working after getting caught in a sudden rainstorm. I tried repairing it and that made it worse: now it powers off automatically half a second after the power button turns on.

While some help here would be nice, that is not the main problem I have.

The problem is that despite this being a relatively minor setback, I cannot stop stressing out about this-heavy breathing, difficulty concentrating, etc. I even said before I opened it up that if it breaks no biggie, but now that it's happened it isn't at all. I cannot stop thinking about it and am having trouble going to bed even though it's well past midnight now. I'm going to see my therapist this week but could really use some ways to cope until then.

It's difficult to offer advice without knowing what exactly you're stressed about. Is it the cost of replacing it? You should be able to find a replacement on eBay for under $75, or you can send it to the Nintendo repair facility and get it fixed. Are you mourning the loss? I don't know how old you are; are you concerned that your parents will think you're irresponsible?

In the future, if you get an electronic device wet, unplug it, remove the battery, and let it sit and dry for a few days. If it wasn't already dead, that should keep it from shorting out. I made this mistake once and it cost me my old GBA. The lesson did save a friend's notebook computer, though.

Sounds like a panic attack or at least anxiety. I would try meditating and/or deep breathing exercises, just sit or lie down and focus on your breathing. Like these: http://healthland.time.com/2012/10/08/6-breathing-exercises-to-relax-in-10-minutes-or-less/

It's difficult to nail down precisely why I feel this way. I think mostly it's that I made something worse by trying to fix it, and now I feel like a failure. The cost per se isn't the issue, but more that it was unnecessary cost I suppose? Also it had sentimental value; I've had it for a very long time.

EDIT: Also another big part is that I'm worried that if I'm having this much trouble with this minor setback, it won't bode well for bigger problems down the line.
