Aww darn. And I do recall seeing that Sectopods still explode when they die, so meleeing one has that fun potential.

"Really, Commander, you want me to stick my metal sword into the guts of a dying machine with a strong electrical power source? What could possibly go wrong with that?"

Not sure why, but both codes for my Digital Deluxe via GMG showed as "Resistance Warrior Pack" on activation. I've got XCOM 2 in my library, I just hope everything went through fine. Now to free space on the SSD prior to install...

If you preordered, you should have recieved an email from them with the codes. (remember if you bought the deluxe version you get to codes and you need to unlock the base game first)

It did the same for me. I just checked the Steam store page for the game, though, and both the base game and the Reinforcement Pack DLC are flagged as "In Library" for me.

It would probably be better for me to spend tonight and tomorrow grinding faction rep with the family so I can take the aggro hit when I stop talking to them for 48 hours. But it is tempting.

FYI if you ordered the Digital Deluxe version from GMG, you'll get two separate keys (one per line). If one of them doesn't work, then use the second one. You have to activate the full game before you're allowed to redeem the pack.

Also don't worry if it looks like you just got the base game+season pass instead of the deluxe, check your steam license list and it shows up properly. (I went and grumbled at GMG before this was pointed out to me)

FWIW, I did play Fallout 4 a day early from New Zealand. I used the VPN called PIA (it is a paid service).

I was never flagged for anything. Granted it was my first time doing it. I don't think Steam really cares if you play a day early.

I don't understand why in this day and age it's not just released at midnight Steam time and that's when people can play.

So I entered one code; it didn't work; I entered the second code; now it's preloading. Do I need to enter the first code again? Confused about what's going on here. Much like how confused this Support is about ramps.

One code is the game, one code is the dlc, so you'll need to redeem the other one as well. You just can't redeem dlc codes without something for it to attach to.

Rechecking some stats on swords vs shotguns, a Blademaster sword actually outdamages a shotgun of equivalent tier at the first tier, i.e. Shotgun vs Sword, where while the shotgun deals more base damage, the sword with Blademaster perk will always deal 1 more damage compared to the shotgun. The damage equalizes at Tier II with the Shard Gun, where a Blademaster Arc Blade deals equal damage to it. It's only at Tier III with the Storm Gun vs Fusion Blade that the damage balance shifts around in favor of the shotgun. Practically though shotguns at all tiers still have a higher damage potential than swords due to use of weapon mods like the Laser Sight (+crit chance) and special ammo, though of course those require luck or resources unlike Blademaster that comes for free.

Swords will still have their moments of course, such as when defending against melee units using Bladestorm, killing multiple enemies per turn with Reaper, or the ability to negate enemy cover in situations where the Ranger is unable to close the distance with a shotgun in point-blank range for an attack and has to use the sword to do so. For "optimal" play though, shotguns at the moment do seem to be the better weapon in terms of overall damage. Of particular note though is that in order to fully take advantage of point-blank shotguns, a Ranger must pick the Run & Gun perk to be capable of using shotguns after dashing, but that comes at the cost of not choosing Conceal, which is an ability that can be more effective than Phantom depending on the circumstances.

.... In fact, if you want to spec a Blademaster Ranger who still maintains the ability to stealth scout, then you can just get Conceal at Lieutenant Rank.

Then again, given my own playstyle, I've never been much for "optimal" plays since my time in Enemy Within was spent rolling around MECs and punching all the things.

Also, Xenonauts 2 was just announced.

    http://www.pcgamer.com/xenonauts-2-is-officially-confirmed/

Moving to Unity3D, gonna be a 3D game instead of 2D sprites. Air combat is getting redesigned and is gonna be turn based. Not a direct sequel but an alt-history sequel, kinda like XCOM 2 but not in the same direction. I'm really interested in seeing where they go with it now that they have the experience of making the first game under their belt. Apparently they're not going to restrict themselves to the design of the original XCOM as much with this, which should be a good thing. Gaming has come a long way since then. Anyway, I'm mildly enthusiastic about this, more games in this niche are welcome to me, as long as they're doing something interesting and distinct.

Are you taking into account that the damage on the sword will be lower due to the accuracy penalty? The shotguns primary attraction is that it's old reliable, so it gets its damage in 100% of the time. While 90% seems like a lot, as XCOM and every other game like it demonstrates time and time again, 90% =/ 100%. As a result once you take into account the sword can miss it does worse damage (on average) than the shotgun does, because the shotgun always gets its damage through. It's also not vulnerable to abilities like Parry.

Do we know if there will be Training Roulette in the new game yet, or are all of the rank perks more integral to the classes now?

I am kind of interested but at the same time it will depend on where they are going. I like the idea of a turn based interception mechanic, but if it's as heavily air war dependent as the original that's going to get tedious really fast.

Isn't it built into the game as a thing you can do to randomly give a soldier a perk from another tree? Could have sworn I saw that in there somewhere. It's one of the facilities that can do it I'm pretty sure.

The xenonauts site says they want to make air combat something that is of "less frequent occurrence but more tactically involved," so that may be exactly what you're asking.
