So, I've discovered that concealment is a blessing and a curse.
Sneaking around is sooooo much fun, but what usually happens is I sneak and sneak and get to a point where I'm wedged in and there's no choice but to engage, and then all those enemies I've been sneaking around become clusterfucks of death.
I absolutely hate that they left in the mechanic that gives enemies a free movement when you see them.
I dicked around trying to make more upgrades before I took on the first blacksite and Advent's UFO intercepted my ship. Game Over. Time to start again.
So thats why my enemies only seem to know how to crit and not do standard damage.
How do you get Bluescreen Rounds? I have no research remaining. Do I just keep making Experimental Rounds until the Proving Grounds RNG it out?
EDIT: I wish the game would draw the tile lines for pod activation if I have Concealed observation on those units.
It's a specific project that gets unlocked to make them. They're not a random result of experimental ammo, they're something you can build on demand. I forget the exact requirements.
It pretty much took the last mission to land solid hits on my guys. Sectopod critting my sniper who was expecting a different angle (very poor cover selection on my part...) and a Muton sniping my rising star Ranger from beyond weapons range... bastard. His boss on the other hand teleported right between the two shotgun wielding Rangers...
I just wanted you to know that the first thing I said on seeing the screenshot was "Ooh, I like that" and I am glad I am working from home today because I wasn't very quiet about it. I really like this version of it.
I have submitted a alien fighting Texan commissar to the character pool. I think.
My participation in this game to date has involved me being murdered horribly by aliens in all my friends' games. It is surprisingly entertaining!

Can't say that I'm a big fan of, "Hey, look, we stumbled onto the secret of how to build these awesome Acid Grenades ! But then after we built the first one who forgot how to do it, so we need to start researching all over again. Sorry, boss."
Who the heck is running that Lab, Bunsen Honeydew and his assistant Beaker ?
I've been playing Ironman. And the game is way more cruel now for some reason:
The high price of moving a single square. That was not moving forward.
I was outside the facility, on the side. I had moved someone into full cover next to a window the previous turn as my scout turn. There was nothing, and I went save and Overwatched.
A pod walked into view, I got 2 hits in on it, though no kills. Ok sure.
Next turn, I move someone next to the guy at the window from 1 square away, and his sight just clips into a second pod.
And I'm potentially in trouble.
I am able to Haywire stun one enemy, I can grenade 2 mooks to death, but I miss all shots at the 1 hp Mec and he attacks with his AoE, which not only hits 4 people but also collapses some stuff and sets stuff on fire. The last mook gets a long distance crit on half cover. My sniper takes 8 damage, and I have to burn my medkit.
The rest of the mission was tense. I have was really really lucky with the Codex spawn, who took 4 Overwatch shots.
I have also had 1 disaster of a mission, where I was using my concealed ranger to scout ahead. I had previously spotted a Muton pod but they went out of range, so I moved after them to see where they went. And the camera zooms... and the pod has moved into another pod. But I'm concealed, I'm ok... I just have to move really carefully.
And the civilian I was next to was a Faceless. RAWR and now I'm facing 2 pods and a Faceless while my main dudes are far away.
So, I've discovered that concealment is a blessing and a curse.

Yeah, this is my life too. I don't feel like I've found the right balance between sneaking and fighting, at least on most maps.
So now I just try to get a really good ambush on the first two groups I see and fight through the rest

I always ambush the first group I see for a decisive one/half turn victory and then with that momentum I have more time to beat up the remaining pods.
I think this probably says a lot about my personality.

For me so far I sneak really aggressively and engage the first group I see. I'm usually engaging on my 2nd or 3rd turn at the latest. Better to kill the pod in the hand than to stumble on 2 in the bush.
Is there a mod that modifies the fog of war? I feel like I should have more of a sense of the layout of the map. I imagine xcom's briefings being all like "okay we'll insert here, then move to this position for setup/ambush, then extract 100 meters away once we've discovered what's inside this impenetrable mist."

You need relay comm research and build the relay tower as you make contacts to keep intel costs at minimum. I was paying 240 intel to make contact with Eastern Asia from my HQ in west US.
Ugh had to restart since I couldn't do black site mission and the counter went past 20 days...
When you hack a tower and get your guys +2 tile sight range, doesn't that just increase the range at which you'll activate enemy pods? Or do they hang out on the periphery not seeing you.
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKERS
Concealment traps are a bit of a double-edged sword early on and become kinda pointless later on.
I. E. At the start of the game, one escaped trooper will ruin one of your guys. Late game, killzone snipers and guardian supports are great, but you want everyone else on cleanup duty. Salvo and or flashbangs.
I haven't actually had a MEC get a shot off, now that I think about it... it's too bad, they're so cool looking! I want 3-MEC pods.
You can still see how they shoot. Hack it and use it against the remainder of the pod!
Spoiler alert, they shoot terribly.
Though running into the middle of a group and micromissiling themselves is always good for a laugh.
Yeah they're not great, but as you mentioned their micromissiles are great, and it's always a bonus to know that the rest of the pod will focus on the MEC for a bit.
Still haven't gotten a hack off actually, I need those damn +20 hack rewards so much! My Specialist is a terror, but 44% isn't good enough to risk when I can have her on reserve to finish off the MEC if things go south. Once it hits 60% I'm hacking everything though it's too fun when it goes well.
I had a VIP mission where I got the VIP to the evac with 3 turns to spare, and they called in reinforcements right next to the evac zone. So I figured I'd stick around and get some free XP for my dudes.
I dropped an Acid Grenade on the flare, and killzoned it.
When they dropped in they just refused to move. 2 went into overwatch, the 3rd just did nothing. Was kind of disappointed I had to kill them regular style.
I had a reinforcements flare appear behind my troops immeditaly after I killed the last enemy and then drop troops immediataly. If they had the turn I would have been fucked.

they really need to do reinforcements better
like no beacon so you don't know exactly where to fucking murder them or they come in instantly...
Went into it with a wounded soldier because the 3 man tower mission involved many bullshit rolls. Had to take him as he was the hacker. He gets his armour health +1 hp to start the mission, and he has a vest on to heal up. Not too bad. Fail the mission in the last room due to more bad rolls and restart - except now it gives him no armour and 1 hp total. It's probably unwinnable thanks to this.
The last room is a total bitch mind. No cover, tons of spawns and the damned avatar hides out of the way half the time.

maybe do that depending on difficulty level
Rookie - beacon and reinforcements won't shoot on first turn or land and assess/not move
Vet - No Beacon and reinforcements will take cover/ only shoot if wide open in LoS
Commander No beacon will shoot on landing
Legend - no beacon random # of reinforcements or pods
Is it possible to have more than one reinforcement drop in a turn?
Because yeah, it's easy to set up one killbox, but two would be way harder, even if it was the same number of guys.

I think it'd be almost entirely resolved by escalating from 1 pack to 2 packs to 4 packs each turn once reinforcements are called.
On Commander/Legendary, have them start at 2 packs. Keep the flares, but basically have reinforcements go from "free XP" to "ooooh, they're going to be on either side of us... maybe let's leave ASAP.
Also I'd maybe like to see an enemy that specifically calls down reinforcements as a skill? I think that'd be neat. Like they toss a flare toward you or something.

The problem with an instant spawn is they'd have to come from farther away or they'd just massacre your squad. You would lose at least one soldier guaranteed every time one of those fuckers dropped in. I wouldn't mind if they spawned roughly one blue move away on their turn, though. That would give them a decent chance of either running for cover or attacking, but not all at once and not all at the same guy.
I think it's alright as is in terms of how they drop in, it's just too easy to guarantee a total kill with 6 v 4. 6 v 8 you 100% will not get a total kill on Overwatch shots, at which point even the best case scenario of leaving two enemies alive is a bit more of a pickle than just 4 down, on to the next 4.
I'm on my tenth campaign attempt now with Ironman, but it's getting better every time. I've done the blacksite but then tend to get crushed immediately afterwards. I think I need to do it earlier while tech is still low or something. A lot of the enemies feel like they have so much health.
Now that we have really good mod tools though, do you think we'll ever see some sort of multiplayer campaign kinda thing?

I do the same thing. The last thing I want is for all my dudes in full cover to be suddenly flanked by the pod I snuck by 2 turns ago.
You can still see how they shoot. Hack it and use it against the remainder of the pod!
