Neiman is going to pee on you tonight, Malachi.

To be fair, Neiman was going to pee on him tonight anyway. ;-)

    Linus is pretty crafty.
    His desk is crates.
    The bookends are rocks.
And it looks like the bookcases are homecamp-made, too.

He could have enlisted other campers help, but still crafty.

I wonder if Neiman will feature in this or if this is going to be a Malachi/Linus storyline?

It looks like their last guest was in September: http://www.campcomic.com/comic/248

I would feel bad for Neiman's rejection if he wasn't just the worst.

I feel bad for Neiman. What if he just needs a friend?
Sure, he's kind of evil and attempted to murder the main trio, but maybe he just wants to be accepted.

"The jokes I make that you really like."
Poor Malachi. But Linus has been kind to Malachi even though he's kind of a jerk a lot. Maybe Neiman just wants the same, he's just a bit more crazy.

So does Malachi officially "work" in the library? If you notice not even his name is in the record book.

Why don't more people use the library?

In the town of Night Vale, it is because of the librarians.

"Visitors are also warned that should they be approached by a librarian, they should remain still and try to make themselves bigger than the librarian."

"Remember: if confronted by a librarian while looking for a book to check out, do not attempt to escape by climbing a tree. There are no trees in the library, and the precious moments it will take you to look around and realize this will allow the librarian to strike."

Also, the Biography section contains nothing but 33 copies of the official biography of Helen Hunt."

He is just this guy, you know....

This is such an allegory for Libraries today. They feel stuffy, old-fashioned and relics of an era when we all didn't have such excellent access to information. I'm not saying they don't have their place - but the paradigm needs to change for them to remain relevant.

When did he try to kill them? I don't remember him doing anything that evil.

Though, maybe he wasn't trying to murder them. Just maim them.
    You know. Like in Misery.
Then Malachi could be his friend forever.

You must not have been to libraries recently. They typically have plenty of computers for people who need to access the internet, and in my part of the world, they libraries are really busy. Sometimes it's hard to find a place to sit.

Libraries are curators of the wisdom of ages. In them you will find the best books from centuries, as opposed to a bookstore which has whatever is hot at the moment, and as opposed to the internet, where you will find a shallow overview and things often disappear after a few years.

    Libraries are still very relevant.

Libraries are still incredibly relevant, but most people don't know why they need them. Free information on the Internet has a wider breadth than anything ever invented by mankind and is incredibly useful for a lot of things. However, information on the 'net is often very shallow (it usually only covers enough information to satisfy curiosity or answer a specific question in layman's terms) and is often cross-posted from one or two sources over and over again with little attention to contradictory information. Libraries are not outright replaced by Internet sources, though many people have replaced their function with Internet research - which is a terrible mistake.

TLDR - libraries are still very useful if you need more than a few soundbites worth of information. There is nothing wrong with soundbites but often we need more.

Made an account just to share my thoughts on the whole debate of internet over libraries.
The internet has pretty much all the information you need for just about anything, from superficial topics to very detailed ones. There are many databases with papers that explain just about anything, unfortunately people often really don't know how to use them or they are not free. Point is, at least in my experience, there isn't anything you might want to research that isn't on the internet too and if there is then the information is probably very outdated.
Libraries are very important though, not only do they have access to these premium databases if they are big but they are also a primary repository for fiction and novels, the kind of thing you read for entertainment and can't find on bookstores. Also it's always common sense to have backup of data and, short of a fire or maybe water, books will last longer than electronics.

  • briguybriguy Registered User regular
    I can't believe there's even a question about libraries.
    Libraries are the best!

  • MendrianMendrian Registered User regular
Most people not having access to scholarly databases is sort of non-trivial when we're talking about information.

Information on the Internet is often poorly sourced and the average layperson using the 'net is far more likely to misquote information not even knowing where it originally came from then if they used a library. You have no idea how many times I've seen termpapers with 'Wikipedia' as a source. Wikipedia is not a source.

  • briguybriguy Registered User regular
Libraries have tons of stuff that you can't find either easily or at all online.
Rare and out of print books. Scholarly journals. Art references. Newspapers. All for free.
    They even have the Internet.

I seem to recall that the library used to have patrons... until Malachi showed up and started making jokes while they were trying to read. I love how oblivious he can be.
