Droids are also good for this. HK (lead), 88, 86, Poggle and the Geonesian Soldier often clear out my first 10 nodes all on their own (on rare occasion node 6 or 9 will give them trouble, especially if Yoda is present; being able to load up debuffs is pretty key to making this work) and then the rest of my crew usually manage to dogpile whatever is left on 10 or 11 where the Droids die and then finish 12 off. I still get stuck on occasion, but at least the days where I went weeks without finishing a GW are finally gone. June was good times, and then July/August and maybe part of September were a clusterfuck. My opponents were excessively difficult, sometimes I'd give up half way through because it was taking forever and I was hemorrhaging teams trying to wear out what was in the way.

I've got Biggs and Leia at my current cap (83, hoping for 84 before the next round of Sunday Challenges, but soon), Wedge is coming along nicely but fuck man, farming a Cantina character just takes forever. Even with a few energy refills (especially on Sunday for the extra tiers/ranking), it's a multi-month adventure. My next one might be the Super Battle Droid. Ugh.

Yeah I still fail occaisionally when you run across the perfect team of assholes.

Also they had a patch or something today and there is now a free biggs with his star fighter. Which was awesome for me since I have biggs leveled and ready to rumble.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

You must be on Android. I got Wedge.

Also had enough to go for the ship box. Got Ahsoka's Fighter, along with 10 Falcon shards.

Looks like that box gives you pairs, if anyone is curious.

Yeah I am on android. Damn this biggs wedge divide!!!

I got Wedge! Which turned into 32 shards, putting me a mere 4 from seven stars!

    O.O

WOOO SEVEN STAR WEDGE (still level 70, but that can be fixed soon enough) LET'S DO THIS THING!

Yeah, I already had Biggs (only 3*so the shards made me able to get him to 4*). So that was nice along with the unlocks for Mace, Tarkin, Ackbar and the pilots. As it is right now my top team is still a rookie-ish (Chewie, Luke, Jedi Consular, Luminara and Talia). Though I am working on getting the Royal Guard and others leveled and star'd up. Think I just need to try and focus on two teams for now so I'm not so spread out.

The ship battles are pretty long (I usually finish a 'normal' arena battle in 2-3 minutes, the ships are closer to 5), but they're juuust different enough to be fun. Especially running Tarkin with his big 'fuck off' wave of TIE fighters ability. I'm glad that you only have to do one for the daily, though I am finding myself high enough that I'm doing 3-5 per day so far.

I'm not sure how they split us up, but I'm hearing it's not by pvp shard, and given that I haven't been bumped 100 ranks overnight, I'm thinking the ship groups may be smaller than the ones we're used to (or a LOT of players are still getting their shit sorted out/aren't interested enough to do more than their single fight for the daily, if that).

One thing for ship arena be really careful at least currently when picking your opponent. Guys who have all their ships at level 1 but have level 83 7 star pilots for all of them make it a lot tougher to tell at a glance if you are picking a fight with a whale or not.

Yup most just have not gotten the auto update yet so we are only seeing the people who were paying attention and manually updated. So far its a pretty fun update to bad the default ships are mostly people I was not focusing on so going to take a lot of time/shards/energy getting them up but they did give a pretty huge chunk of shards to kick start that so I can't complain. My mace windu is now 6* so once I gear him up I think I can do the next yoda thing I had not been bothering with.

Getting 5 or 6 ships to 2 stars is going to take a little doing. I have the characters, but the RNG for getting the right shipments isn't always kind.

The initial burst of resources was nice, but the rate of accruing more is not great (not that I expected otherwise, just saying). I also wish I'd saved a bit more GW points for buying ships, I don't recall them mentioning ships being found in that store previously, but since I'd been building up tens of thousands of them with nothing to do, I'd started burning through 5k a shot on maxed characters (all of them) for shard shop points towards Grievous. Finally unlocked him, and almost able to get 30 more shards out of the 65 I need for another star, but I'd rather have those thousands of points back for ship shards than be half way to 5 stars on a level 40 character.

Oh well. I should've had more than a couple thousand saved up just in case anyway, just wanted to bitch about that a little.

Hopefully there's more coming (events, other stuff), or if this is just "Credit Crunch 2.0" they realize it in something less than half a year this time.

The initial swell to bump up some new ships was fine, but much like normal characters, getting ships up into the 80's is going to take some doing (read, giant piles of cash) and getting like 5k here and there isn't going to cut it in the long term.

Maybe it's just being kept low now while everyone is still figuring things out, but it's like the old setup; the longer that exists, the less likely people will be to actually try out your new modes/mechanics in interesting/fun ways, the price of doing so and not having it pay dividends is just too high.

I know I'm Preach(er)ing to the choir here, just hoping we don't see a repeat of this past year's "oh, getting the same credits in the high 70's isn't helping on the long crawl towards 80? Funny that" experience.

Entirely agreed on it taking too long though. The GW alone is enough of a timesink, and luckily we can now Sim a lot of the other crap, but add in the paired raids, two arenas, and other odds and ends, and it's a lot more than I'd like to spend just staring at my phone (or glancing at it once in a while).

We're well past 'pull out for 5 or 10 minutes here and there while waiting in line/on the bus/between commercials/whatever'.

I decided to give this a try over the holidays. Seems to be decently fun at the start though it's started getting a bit grindy already at lvl 31. Feel free to ally with me if you want 399-298-119

While I browse through the whole thread, is there any general advice? I keep seeing people complaining about credits at higher levels, so I assume I shouldn't just be buying out the credits items in the shipment menus and just keep grinding out shards for chars i want.

Since you're just starting out, here are a few tips:
    • Don't waste your crystals right now on energy. Stock pile them like a mad man. You'll level up so often that wasting them this early on will be counter-productive to what you'll need them for later.
    • If you are going to purchase crystals, go with the pack that awards 100 crystals each day for 30 21 days. It's hands down the best value there is for crystals.
    • For characters that you'll want to start out early with, pick toons that fit into multiple categories: ST (stormtrooper) Han is a Rebel and a Scoundrel. This will be important later on, as there are events for multiple categories (Rebels, Jawas, Droid, Empire, Resistance, Scoundrel, etc.). Having leveled and geared up toons that fit into multiple categories will help you out a ton in the long run.
    • Once you get high enough, always participate in Galaxy War (GW) and the PvP Arena. The rewards you get can be used on character shards, and are totally worth the time to complete. Don't worry if you don't perform well at first. The rewards are what's important.
    • QGJ can only be purchased via Cantina currency, but he is 241% worth the effort. Seriously one of the best toons in the game.
    • When able, join a guild and start participating in their events. Even if you do 0 dmg in a raid, you get ranked and thus receive rewards. Plus, you can request and donate gear to other members. Additionally, you can spend guild currency on other shards or gear items.
    • Don't go top-heavy with one squad. Try to keep a few squads all around the same toon and gear level. This will be of tremendous value in GW, as the difficulty is based upon your top 5 toons. Top heavy means you'll have a terrible time getting through it. I did this and have spent months trying to even it all out. Don't do what I did.

In regards to spending credits on items, those amounts are minuscule in comparison to how much it costs to level up toons. My general rule of thumb is to purchase any of those shipments that require currency if I have less than 200 of them. At some point, you'll have multiple toons requiring the same piece of gear and can burn through 100+ quickly. This way, those are covered.

There are a lot of other things, but I think those are good starting points. Keep asking questions in here, and people will be able to help. When you get into a guild, guild chat might be able to assist as well.

Just to keep him from going crazy, the 100 crystals per day is for 21 days, not 30.

Note, I don't use it anymore, but I've always thought that was dumb. It's a subscription fee that basically says "we want to charge $20 per month, but don't think people will pay $20 per month, but that they WILL pay $5 per week if we skew it a bit".

Another random note: As far as I can tell, the new ships game type is pretty much its own thing and has very little reward for the non-ship game. Participate in it, but don't spend non-ship resources (such as pvp currency) on ship resources as a new player. You can turn non-ship resources into ship resources, but you can't go back the other way, and for now you should focus on your characters.

Plus side you can use the ship arena currency for certain heroes who are pilots or ship crew so it is a boost for new players as long as you just concentrate on using that currency on building up characters first before doing anything much with ships.

I was going to go purely f2p and grind out those character and their stars, but I had the option for a Dark Side starter pack (random char unlock of Sidious, HK88, and I think some old lady Sith) for $3 dollars and change and unlocked a Darth Sidious. And he is now wrecking everything in the world, so I assume I need to try to star up this guy with pvp marks as quick as possible. I do feel kind of sullied, but grinding out dark side characters has been tedious. I have the feeling I've used up my luck on character packs, so I doubt I'll ever get another (especially since the other character packs I've seen are largely just shards and much more expensive).

I did pass on the laughably priced, one chance only, instant level up boost for Sidious up to level 40 and mk IV gear for $14.

One question, I've been sitting on a bunch of Ally Points because the description mentions being able to use them to refresh characters for some events? I don't think I've ever seen this option though. Are these points just for that random chance of one out of a bazillion things packs or is there some other event(s) that use Ally Points?

Edit: I guess nevermind on that last question as this Tie Fighter event is using Ally Points to refresh..

@Cobell - Just be forewarned that while Sidious is amazing at first, he tailors off and becomes no threat at all later on in the game, unless the opposing teams is all Jedi. His unique ability grants him a ton of evasion against Jedi. Even then, I just kill everyone else before targeting Sidious.

I honestly don't care for the ship update at all. I've got a lot of complaints against it.

First - ship battles just take too long. This is compounded by the fact that they allow reinforcements. There should not be reinforcements. There's no need for that.

Second - It's just more shards to collect, and just like the vanilla launch of the core game, shards are in short supply, money is in short supply, and the whole thing feels incredibly unfair and imbalanced for the average player. The entire distribution system is obviously designed to milk the whales. I don't have a problem with the F2P model, but I do have a problem when it is so very obviously tailored in the whale direction that it becomes next to impossible for the casual players to progress. Even if a person were to spend $20 on crystals, it would get them absolutely nowhere. We're talking hundreds of dollars are needed in order to get ahead right now.

    Third - There is not a clearly defined way of earning character shards like there is in the campaign and character side of the game. In the ship side of the game, the Fleet store seems to randomize the available shards each day and there are no missions you can run or spend stamina on for specific shards. I also made the mistake of spending 499 crystals on a pack. I wont' be doing that again. They gave me shards for Sun Fac's ship, which I don't even own the character so the ship shards are doing me no good at all.;

The whole thing is a poorly executed mess.

  • DarkewolfeDarkewolfe Registered User regular
I'm really just viewing the ships as a random side thing that can be safely ignored unless you just need something else to do.

Last ally point tournament event, I think I recall that they reset the ally point refresh cost midway through the tournament. Anyone have any guesses/intel on whether that'll happen again?

What is this I don't even.
  • LucascraftLucascraft Registered User regular
It happens on the daily reset of the tournament. At the top left it should say "Refresh in XX:XX" or something similar. That is your character cost reset. This will be found on the Tournament page itself

  • LucascraftLucascraft Registered User regular
These tournaments are so poorly designed though.

This Darth Vader one only gives enough shards to the top 25 players to actually get the ship. Everyone else will probably end up having to participate in the event 3-4 times before they get enough shards. And that's assuming the event ever comes back.

I had the same problem with Clash of Clans. Their distribution of resources kept the rich richer and didn't benefit the middling players at all. Once you broke into their super champion tier, the bonus resources you got from making attacks were more than your Silver/Gold tier players would get total from the entire raid. It created this massive power imbalance that essentially locked a person into whatever tier they were in, because tiers above them generated so many bonus resources that they were always able to stay ahead. It's a 1% kinda system.

And this Star Wars game is designed the exact same way. The top 1% prospers and everyone else mucks along at only about a quarter of the speed.

  • DarkewolfeDarkewolfe Registered User regular
Yeah, I'm not pulling for the vader ship, but it's still a decent number of ship credits. Ships, as we established, are pretty useless fun fuckery for your spare time.

To tie into the comments about buying the ship pack with crystals, and the fuckery with ships, I made the mistake of buying the 2500 crystal ship pack. I've been playing this for nearly a year, I *KNEW* it was probably a bad idea, but I decided to use some spare crystals and do it all the same.

    This is what I got;

    btpb3qrvreku.png

It's worthless to me. Maul needs crystals to enhance, and fuck that noise, so his ship is something I couldn't give less of a shit about (I have him at 4 stars, where he has been since the early days I picked up the game and bought a few character packs). TIE Pilot/Fighter/Resistance X-Wing shards are okay, but the former is way behind, and the latter I already have the guy himself at 7 stars. Fett; same deal, the shards are a drop in the bucket, and the character is already at 7 stars.

It was a waste. Basically saved me maybe 2000 GW points on 2 ships, and another 2000 on ships I won't be farming up anytime soon in the first place.

I walked into it knowing I'd regret it, and yes I did it all the same, so consider this a warning to others. Their "5-100 shards!" thing is the biggest crock of shit. Sure, I didn't get 5 anywhere, but 10/50 or 10/80 is nothing to be excited over.

I'm pointedly just buying shards for mostly the starter ships and a few others as I build them higher to unlock higher star capital ships. JC, Biggs, Wedge, GS, Resistance X-Wing, and FO TIE, 2 of which are already 3 stars.

But hey, at least they made the Jedi Consular relevant again.
