Seriously, every fucking time. Every time conservatives fight tooth and nail against some aspect of social progress, shouting from the rooftops that the very fabric of the country will disintegrate if slavery ends/women get the vote/same sex marriage passes. And every time it finally happens despite them, and everything is fine, and they just blink for a few seconds and go "OK, but this NEXT thing, definitely this is the one that will set every square inch of America on fire."

They're like a three-year-old who has a tantrum when he has to stop playing and go to bed, and then zonks out in two minutes flat because he's so tired, and then throws the same fucking tantrum again the next night. Except in the case of the three-year-old, you don't hold it against him because his brain hasn't finished growing yet. I don't know what the Republican party's excuse is for being so blindly pig-ignorant of the entire course of history.

    It keeps winning them elections.

It's also my fault for bringing up the vote in response to someone mentioning it. I was trying to point out how far down the GOP is spiraling. My bad didn't mean to derail the thread.

I feel pretty nihilistic most of the time, tbh

but I don't really think my nihilism should apply to others either

and I still want to make sure my kids have a nice, happy life, and everyone else does too

like I guess basically I feel like nothing's really gonna change and a lot of effort is worthless

but at the same time that doesn't mean you shouldn't try

maybe that's not nihilism, I dunno

Nihilism carries an implicit "there's no point in trying". As long as you're willing to push for improvement, even if you believe actually achieving it is impossible, you're no nihilist (and you also have my respect, because that shit can be hard.)

I kind of have to believe that things are going to change if I'm going to keep living.

I've had to deal with a lot of this myself lately, and there really isn't any other conclusion you can come to but to keep going and believing in the future and your place in it. Especially when you have people like I do such as Mara in your life who support you and need your support in turn.

It's just really hard sometimes, between endless internal emotional and mental battles with anxiety and disappointment with one's self image, to the broader exterior conflicts we see play out in the news every day like the bathroom bills, to remain optimistic about anything. It's all very exhausting.

hey folks, I know that a lot of people (myself included) like to use humor as a response to shitty stuff but I think that we cis people should maybe consider that making jokes about things that threaten trans people's lives is not entirely appropriate or welcome, even if it's being done with good intentions

it's easy for us to take the piss out of ignorant transphobes because we aren't the people being targeted by their hate, but we should respect that trans people have to take this stuff very very seriously

You need to bring, like, four stomachs because there's so many good eats here. @rhylith and I could point out a few places, Niko Niko's stands out as probably the best Greek food in town. Ninfa's is pretty much Mecca for Tex-Mex (Tex-Mexxa?) and there's at least three Antone's Delis right inside the West Loop. I'd say try out the restaurants in the Galleria if you're looking to waste a ridiculous amount of money on the company credit card, but that may not be feasible.

    Places to avoid:

Grand Lux Cafe - their sanitation standards are abyssmal

House of Pies - they cut down their pie selection and their profits suffered as well as their cleanliness

Ruchi's Taqueria - it's the definition of shithole these days which is really sad because they used to be really good

    Places to Mourn:

Old San Francisco Steakhouse - damn good beef and that says a lot in beef country, it will be missed

59 Diner - so sad, so many years of service, so many deliciously unhealthy breakfasts; @Whippy did you hear they all closed down? Truly, a loss to the world of gastric delights.

There's actually a non-zero chance of that kind of thing happening

Like modern people with no sense of history crack jokes about the National Guard escorting someone somewhere but the reality is that the history of that is because racists were not only insanely opposed to integrated schools they were physically blocking black students from access, the governor was supporting the racists and actually initially used the National Guard to block black students.

It only changed when the President, in response, federalized the Arkansas National Guard, to make them escort the students to class and assist integration instead of obstruct it.

It was not an overreaction by the federal government. It was the state government being out of their fucking minds and literally using the forces of state to resist progress.

    Almost like... right now.

Yes, this is exactly the reference I was making.

I think the best food I had in San Antonio was from this place down on the Riverwalk called "The Original Mexican Restaurant" or something along those lines. I'm sure it's touristy bullshit, but the burrito I got was the size of my head and super delicious.

    Oh good.

Trudeau even attempting to do something positive for trans people has allowed me to recognise shitheads on my Twitter and Facebook who didn't previously express transphobic opinions but suddenly do now.

I've actually lucked out in not having seen anyone on my Facebook feed being a prick. Maybe I've finally pruned people down to an acceptable grouping of opinions? (That's a nice dream.)

On another note, I just read a pretty solid article on Time about the differences that Trans men have perceived about their treatment at work and in their personal lives post-transition. (They do mention a bit about Trans women, as well.)

Interesting to see Conservative leaders now apparently approving of the trans bill after shutting it down for the last like, five years.

But the conservatives in the senate are vowing to shit on it, and that's the huge problem because they still have enough power there to be a pain in the ass.

Ya there has been a whole huge breakdown with the GOP lately and I've had a front row seat for it.

I have gotten into it with them when I said Gay marriage is a right under the law, and Transgendered people have been going to the bathroom for years without incident and why are you complaining now.

The straw that broke the camels back was when I told a group i had no plans to vote for Trump and would stay home and got punched by one of the Trumpkins there.

I'm just so done with it all. Hopefully when this eventually reaches the SCOTUS they will give the right ruling and transfolk can use the bathroom they need to and everyone can pee in peace.

My cousin is a queer rights political activist in Toronto (his mother, my aunt, is a city councilor), and he's been really leading the charge in busting the chops of Rona Ambrose (interim leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, for those who don't know), since she is only now coming out in favor of Trudeau's bill after voting against protections and rights for trans and queer people three times in the past.

Like while it is nice and all that as the Conservative leader she is in favor of this now (and goes to underline how... different things are in Canada that the official leadership of our political right wing is publically pro-trans rights, nowadays), it's important not to let shitty politicians get an easy back-pat for being par humans at the right time in history after actively fighting social progress tooth and nail their entire career previous.
