Not quite, unfortunately. While you can make armors and weapons from monster drops, they aren't really monster-themed like your usual MH armor sets. Instead you'll probably be wearing level-appropriate Light, Medium or Heavy armor with not much room for visual customization. There are "Event Quest"-style quests and equipments that let you get things like a set of Onion Knight armor or a Buster Sword and I think late-game you can acquire class-themed armor sets.

One nice thing is that if you find an armor set you REALLY like, it can be upgraded to nearly match the stats of maxed out end game armor. Weapons and armor selections are largely based on the look and the secondary trait of the weapon/armor (STR +2, Crit Power, etc).
Most of the jobs are from story progression, but a couple are from activities outside the main quest, such as
creating x monsters or learning certain spells

Finally crafted the Onion Knight armor. Figured I'd hop back into the Knight class for a bit now that I've got new skills for it.
...Nope! I have completely forgotten how to do this. Back to Ninja and Ranger for me.
Also: my Cure is pretty weak even with eleven Healing mutations. Think it's time for me to upgrade to Cura? (Mind, I get better returns from Regen anyways...)

Mutations have diminishing returns. Severely, in some cases (I think for instance elemental damage is a giant bit on 1 point, and then at 8 you've only just doubled what 1 point gets you or something)

It's kind of easy to farm up mutations. Set Cura, Curaga, Esuna, and take three monsters (since it seems they give a bit more resonance when tagging more things?). Cactuars and mandragoras would be good here - things that will cast liberally without enemies around.
Just spam out heals until you clear 100, and then just check until the surge you want pops.
Now, that aside... aberrants are some kind of bullshit. Like, Fenrir just ate me alive.
I can't say I'm a fan of how the gear upgrading works either - the skills are fine, but pumping the stats is... ugh, on account of just being ridiculous amounts of mats for tiny boosts (It actually seems to scale up with gear level).

I might just do that. Maybe even plop the magics onto Chemist so I can use his free item ability for that item that shuffles Crystal Surges?

I got this before the weekend and just couldn't put it down, really enjoying it!

I also just picked up 2 copies for the gf and I to play together, it is pretty great so far. Call it heresy, but I could never get into Monster Hunter on 3DS because it just felt so obtuse/overwhelming/complicated and I just didn't want to deal with it. This feels more streamlined and easier to hop into and I appreciate that.
I think that means I'm getting old.

No, this is closer to PSO than MH. Much more forgiving. Hack and slash instead of dodge or die.
What struck me immediately (being a huge MH fan) was how much MH wastes your damn time. Being able to airship into any zone saves a lot of time... And so does reviving on the spot instead of the walk of shame in MH. I may have trouble getting into the next MH and I really hope FFEX sees a sequel.

? You still have to hoof it through a couple zones usually.

Oh, that's going to change.
The thing about the smaller monsters is that they pose basically zero threat. Killing them takes a few seconds, but if you're in a rush you can simply run past them. All they are is another form of gathering node. They ultimately have nothing to do with the challenging part of the game, and just serve to fill out areas that add a delay between actual fights that's comparable to the travel time in MH. MH sort of has the same thing, but at least in MH the areas that you've moving through might be used in a fight, while in FFEX they have no purpose beyond being filler.
Proceed far enough in, and you'll eventually start getting quests that require you to kill multiple bosses. This means that you'll have to travel through multiple areas of filler, fight a boss, travel back through the same filler (you can skip this step with a teleport stone), travel across the filler separating hubs until you reach the one you want, then travel through even more filler before you reach the boss. And that's just for two bosses, there are some quests that require even more.
MH is incredibly friendly compared to that, you can generally get from anywhere to anywhere else in less than two minutes or so.
Oh I'm finished the game, and the multi-boss quests really turned me off. I wouldn't have even done them if I wasn't playing co-op with my brother. That is definitely a big downside, but the Revive on the spot is just awesome. I also hadn't really thought about the fact that the connecting zones are completely worthless - MH definitely does utilize almost every zone.
I almost picked this up as someone who sort of likes monster hunter but is challenged by the deliberate obtuseness of it. But everything good I've heard comes from someone playing coop, and apparently it's assumed later in the game you'll play with friends?
I played dragoon myself. You hit really hard, and there's a ton of inherent regen. You do have the weakness of the block move only halving damage, but you make up for it with a self-heal and the ability to gain health back through all of your attacks.
The issue with the game requiring coop doesn't stem from the difficulty (a good build and good monster party will mitigate most issues) but with the later quests having you go from one end of the map to the other for multiple bosses. In coop you can divide and conquer to turn a painfully long quest into a tolerable one. You can save yourself time solo by buying Teleport Stones at every opportunity and using them but it only dulls the pain.

I've found it pretty hard to leave the Monk. Counter is just so good. Also teleport punch and kamehameha blast are pretty strong.
I just unlocked Dark Knight though so I might give that a shot
Keeping track of these Ability Mutations is a real pain in the ass

I'm definitely enjoying this as a more mindless alternative to monster hunter
even when I turn my brain off for an hour I come out the other side feeling a lot more ownership over my character cause of the mutations on my skills

I'm sorta back in the swing of things. Think I'll switch my gunner from Machinist to Alchemist so I can spam Oracles for them sweet, sweet Links.
EDIT: Eugh, now I remember why I put this down. Did a freeroam and brickwall'd against Dryad. Items are clumsy to use. Gun skills have massive windups, necessitating Link mutations. I only got one Endless Link in 45 minutes and one of the mutations I got from it is of use to me. And all skills are bound to the shoulder buttons, one of which is also your lock-on button.
I main Charge Blade in MH4U and my hands get nowhere near as tied up as when I'm playing this.

Actually, you'd be surprised, the bite-sized mission structure of FFEx works into a lot of schedules.

Then we did a kutku quest and they were all, 'aww it's cute.' and I'm like, 'yeah... We gotta beat it to death.'
Anyway I still pick this up every so often and clear a few more. Still haven't finished every quest.
Ninja still my favorite. Huzzah.
This game has very quickly jumped up the list. I enjoy it's relative simplicity and flexibility.

I'm sure they're are other classes that can do as good if not better since I didn't optimize much.
Grouping is definitely not required.
I've since specialized into the job (knuckle crit build with a bunch of support), and been knocking down five star bosses.
I just unlocked Dark Knight though so I might give that a shot
