Touch The Dead
2007-04-18-touchthedead-lg.jpg
Yes, that is the real title. And yes, that is Arthur Suydam of Marvel Zombies fame on box art duty.
So, uh....what's the game about?
Well it's a FPS for the DS. You play as Rob Stiener, the lone human in a jail full of zombies. Really, that's as far as you'll get in story. The game's on rails and you Aim/Shoot via the touch screen. You switch between weapons via the D-Pad. Oh, and there's multiplayer/co-op via Wi-Fi.

Zombie's coming up the hall! Tap gypsy! Tap!
Neat, when does it come out?
On May 15th.

I'll admit, it's not gonna be game of the year, but holy hell if it doesn't have the best name/box art in a long while.

I'm a little disappointed it's a rails-shooter instead of an FPS, but still...looks awesome. I'll never be able to get all of the DS games I want, there's just too many!

So let me get this straight. The top screen is the HUD, and the bottom screen is the game? And you touch zombies on the bottom screen to shoot them?

It seems like it would make more sense to have the zombies on the top screen, and touch the bottom one to shoot at them. Otherwise this is going to seem like Ouenden with huge targets.

I like how the hearts that you have as health are actual human hearts too.

Didn't see the on-rails part before. Nice that this and Umbrella Chronicles are trying to bring that genre back to the forefront though.

The formula's worked before in Point Blank DS (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ds/pointblankds?q=point%20blank#critics. From the sounds of the reviews it was a bit shallow, but light-gunning without a light-gun was apparently fun. It's cheap too, if you can find it in the Toys R Us clearence bin for $5-$10.

While I'm not a huge fan of the over-the-top gore presentation of Touch the Dead, I'm glad the genre is getting another look on the DS. I hope we see more of these types of games, since the system is well suited for them.

as much as i love zombies, lightgun games, and the promotional art for this game, i doubt that Touch the Dead will be very good. yes, initial previews have been positive, but the videos that've been released so far don't seem to indicate that there's any fun to be had.

I'm hoping this is one of those games that's only like 2 hours long, but has massive replayability. Where you can go through each level and say, "Oh, I love this part!" or "This part is really difficult." A lot of games become really repetitive and easy after you memorize them, but House of The Dead only becomes more fun.

Saw this on On The Spot the other day. Looks surprisingly fun, and even like it has different paths through the game as you can click on different doors and signs to go in that direction. I'll have to check it out...once I get through the pile of games I already own that I need to play.

Kinda weird to see a "Something the Dead" game not being made by Sega.

Haven't tried this yet. I heard something about the shooting being just tapping the zombies over and over and it was more like a first person stabber than a shooter. And when you're out of bullets you have to drag them across your screen and place them into your clip which gets awkward, but I guess is sorta suspense building to actually have to manually reload when zombies are coming at you.

    1. yes, you tap the zombies to 'shoot them.' This is meant to make the game like a Light Gun game. Thus, it is meant to be as hectic as such. It's not a First Person Shooter. It's a Light Gun game; of which all take place in first person. And on rails.

    2. Thank God they make you drag the bullets across to a clip to reload. What would be the alternative? One reviewer said you should have the L shoulder a 'reload button.' What then? People would constantly be clicking the L button throughout the game; it'd be like having an "infinite clip" of ammo, which would detract from the onslaught of enemies and reduce the intensity of the game. Making you drag/drop your ammo adds to the intensity required by good 'lightgun shooters.' It's not like they have the option of requiring you to 'shoot offscreen' to reload.

Anyway, this game looks kind of campy, which can be either good or bad. But it's possibly still pretty good in a hectic "stylus shooter" kind of way. I'll probably be getting this, but I'm not 100 percent sure yet.

I have yet to get too far into it but so far it is fun. Really hectic fun when when there are four zombies on the screen and you are blast blasting away and need to reload. The time it takes to reload adds an element of ... I dunno... suspense. The only problem I have thus far is the inconsistent headshotting. Whereas it might take one shot to the head to bring one zombie down, you'll need half a magazine to bring down the one right next to it. I likes it though, on rails but there are like...choose your path sections. I dunno if it is 30 dollars fun just yet though, maybe later on.

They misspell "penitentiary" in the intro.

That aside, it's pretty fun, if not incredibly repetitive. Sliding the ammo over to the clip makes a difference in terms of strategy and stress, which is half the point of a zombie game in the first place.

    It's good times.
