Aren't governments destroying any horns they confiscate? Is that having any noticeable effect on poaching frequency?

Governments have massive stockpiles of rhino horn and elephant tusks. They periodically destroy them. In the meantime some get lost and certain people get richer.

If this reserve had been able to sell the horns after dehorning all our rhinos they would have been able to kit out their anti-poaching team with the best equipment and fund them for the next twenty years. Instead the horns get locked away somewhere and we continue asking for donations to buy our AP guys food, fuel and handheld radios.

Probably a stupid question, and one I'm guessing that you don't have the information for more than an informed opinion on the subject, but I'm curious for your thoughts...
If those governments with huge stockpiles of animal parts were to open their stockpiles and flood the markets, would they have enough supply to tank the demand and kill the black market (and thus the profitability of poaching) for any length of time?

Today is my first day back at work after four glorious days off for PAX South. I had a fair amount of work to catch up on and a few new projects to get started. I brewed my pot of tea, put on a killer playlist, and had an amazingly productive morning. Took my lunch hour, which I spent a good chunk of reading in the lovely sunny, 72 degree weather, and had to pry myself out of my car back into the office. So much for productivity.

I think I've decided that I am gonna go back to school in the fall. Last time around I fucked it all up pretty badly so I'm sure I'll have to take a bunch of classes over again, but I think this time I can actually make a go of it.

My work ethic is better now than it ever has been, my head is in a waaaay better place than it was when I was 18, I know what's expected of me this time.

Look around for colleges that work with or cater to adult learners. It is a completely different environment then the programs they create for the 18 year olds playing with their parents money. A good one should help you evaluate what college level learning you actually have and verify it for credit.

    i live in wyoming.

there is one college here, the local community college i went to the first time around, and the state college (university of wyoming) is about forty five minutes away across the mountains

other than that it's, like, IBMC.

    i think that's about it...

I read that as ICBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missile) and was so confused.

So the snow outside is very wet and very heavy. The parts of the driveway I cleared earlier are already melted. I went back out to clear the large piles left from the city plows that cleared the street and was standing there contemplating how effective the snow blower would be when some old guy on an atv with a plow attached drove by, stopped, said he'd take care of it and 30 seconds later my job was done!

Thanks random bored old guy on an atv!

Strictly speaking, there are plenty of ICBMs in Wyoming, given that Warren AFB is there.

They didn't say why in the rejection email. Just that I didn't get it.

I now more than likely get to learn all about the exciting world of fucking firearms accessory manufacturing.

    Yaaaay.

Interestingly, perhaps a little ironically, I'd rather shoot myself in the fuckin face.

and for five dollars less an hour, too! fuckin hooray.

and looking at the job postings currently, it seems like the only things that make decent money that don't require at least a Bachelor's (which, haha, i don't have because i'm a goddamn idiot) is a couple of postings for a fucking correctional officer at the local juvenile detention facility

    and fuuuuuuck that nonsense

god... maybe i should go back to school or something

What do you think of a trade school, maybe?

I've thought about it, but I'm not sure what I'd wanna do, you know? I'm kind of at an impasse, it seems.

Welding is a good place to be if you wear your gloves, sleeves, and mask.

Less shit to deal with than a plumber, no monkeying around in attics like an electrician.

Maybe go HVAC technician since everybody loves their central air. Although that does have crawl space bullshit involved.

My uncle Dennis is a welder! Got his underwater cert a few years back, I guess he's been working on offshore oil rigs.

I dunno, it's something to think about certainly. I just feel like I gotta make a forward move, somehow. I've been making too many moves backwards or laterally and it's gettin mighty old.

You probably don't want to do underwater since it's dangerous as hell and right now oil ain't so hot.

Plenty of other trades to consider but if I had to do it all over again, I'd go welding or HVAC. Especially here in TX.

I went electrical, cause I'm small and can fit in attics! it's going to take a couple years to get back to what I was making in IT, but after that I will BLOW BY

and also probably get free tools, a truck, and a gas card

Hell yeah it's good money. As for tools, there is nothing quite like owning your own. A good drill, wire cutters/strippers, pliers, and screwdrivers are pretty much your basic set for electrician work, yeah?

Besides those important voltage meters and shit

    and a knife!

I'm freaking the fuck out a little bit: I'm supposed to leave for Japan on Sunday...but I have no plane tickets, no hotel reservations, I don't know the team there, I don't know where they're staying or how they even get to work, my apartment is a mess, I have to do all my laundry, and my best friend dropped his shitty project in my lap to take care of for the rest of the week because he's getting sent to Florida. I'm probably gonna be a fucking mess until the moment I get to whatever hotel I can get reservations at, and even then I will be panicking about traveling alone in a country I've never been to that is very far away.

One of the goals is to convince people to stop buying the stuff at all. Selling the stockpiles of it would be contrary to that. I don't think any short term gains from flooding the market would be worth the long term harm of encouraging the continued use of the materials.

Woof, I had a fairly busy day today

big event at the office, which meant breaking down the boardroom into a 'classroom setup' (taking the ten tables that make up the boardroom table and breaking them down into smaller sections), moving all the chairs out and moving other chairs in, setting up beverages, etc... And then breaking it all down after it's over!

I don't get as much exercise at this job as I did at previous jobs, but... I got a good bit today.

Also I don't think flooding the market would bring demand down. It would bring the price down. But of course nobody involved in the trade is going to want that.

Proponents of legalised trade would follow the De Beers diamond model, controlling supply to keep the price up. The idea is then that profits from legal trade would be used to fund security and prevent illegal poaching. But then demand will never go away.

It's a complicated issue and I don't know where I stand on it. South Africa recently lifted their ban on trading horn domestically, and some people are going to petition for the international ban to be lifted too. There are farmers here with hundreds of rhinos whose horns they harvest and store, waiting to be able to sell them.

I just want rhinos to survive in the wild. But they are being killed as fast as they breed and I don't know if they'll disappear before demand does.

eh pros and cons. we're pulling an aide that wants to advance into a teacher spot as the sub so to them it's a positive for their career. I'm also worried about a few students getting overly dependent on me being around and a month away could be good for building some independence. maybe.

QFC often discounts things in their store for fast sales. This includes the meat department. The stuffed chicken breast I bought made this intense work day palatable. Blanching potato slices and baking them at the same time further helped, as did those final spoonfuls left in the pint of ice cream.

The GS overlords are beginning to freak out about my departure. The TG bosses....not so much.

I had three phone calls yesterday and have two meetings today. All with names like "What now?" "Please don't." "Uh...tell us how you do what you do"

Motherfuckers, you had your chance. I MADE IT SO EASY. "I'd like more responsibility, a new title, recognition for what I'm already doing, and a few grand to reflect the additional workload." "Nah."

In related news: The pod-type moving company is booked, one-way ticket to CA is booked, hotel will be booked today, realtor is on the line and ready to start showing me around the minute I get there, half the apartment is packed, daily pep talks are being given to the cats, vehicle transport is arranged, and notice is given on the current apartment.
