So i was just curious, now that the hype for this game is completely dead and everything, is FFXII any good? i really have only played 7, 10, and most of 9. i loved all three of those ones but i just really havent heard to much about 12. Any thoughts?
I'm going to go against the grain and say that it was great but nowhere near brilliant. The flaws are just too numerous to warrant a 'brilliant' rating from me (I'd list them but I don't want to put you off from playing the game). I'll just say that it's really hard to believe that the game took 5 years to develop.
It did do some things that I loved though, in particular the lack of a love story, the translation, the voice overs and the non-linearity (well, it was pretty non-linear compared to FFX anyway).
I used to love the FF series, and while playing this game, I thought something along the lines of "this game's combat system, presentation, and everything is simply one of the best I've ever seen in an RPG...but holy hell am I bored." It simply didn't catch me, but I think it might be my tastes changing against JRPGs.
Edit: But if you're sure you're hankering for some FF-ish goodness, by all means go for it.
I'll echo what Darlan said as well. Some really, really great things about the game, but I just couldn't drive myself to finish it either. I will tack it up to my own personal tastes and gaming preoccupations at the same time than the game itself.

But on the other hand, I played it for 150 hours and loved almost every minute of it.
FF12 is one of the best, if not the best game I've ever played. I'm only at about 50 hours, though, but that's been a pretty solid 50 hours of awesome, and that is 10 times more time than I put into most games. Hell, I'm so fickle, I often don't even make it an hour into a game.
Uh, just to be a dissenting voice, I really didn't like it at all. If you spent the effort to use Gambits, combat was uninteresting and completely unengaging. There basically wasn't a plot to speak of and most of the characters were just tagging along for something to do. There were a few nice parts and cool moments, but for the most part, it was easily one of the least engaging games I have ever in my life played. I would literally read a book while playing the vast majority of it.
But yeah. Great game. Fantastic battle engine, really makes games with random encounters look primitive. Many of the sidequests are maddening (did anyone get to Hell Wyrm without a guide?), but hey, that's what GameFAQs is for. The boss and mark fights are enormously cool. And the gambit system is a fantastic way to alleviate the tedium of the average JRPG.
For the bad, characters aren't heavily developed. Anyone can do anything with enough license points-- that irritates some people. The later dungeons are too damn long, and the puzzles vary between inexplicable and obvious. Still, the fantastic fighting engine carries it. Highly recommended.
I think it's a great game but it did get overtalked in hindsight. It's good, but not as good as many think.
You just described every game ever. Every single one.
Except Gears of War. Gears is just as good as it was on day one.
Oh please. Gears of War was one of the most (if not THE most) overtalked games of last year. Having played it and finding it good, I can say that it's basically RE4 + cover + shitty dialogue + rubbish level design.
But I digress, personally I save all my MP (and good items) for boss fights. I very rarely have to use all of it, but it's nice to have just in case the boss is insanely hard (or I'm under-levelled).
The story was a little light, but I'm having a hard time thinking of an RPG that's better, to be honest. For what was expected of a Final Fantasy game, it might be a bit disappointing, but comparing it to all the other stuff out there, I'd say it does pretty well.
the game started to drag near the endgame (50hrs in), but its still a really solid game.
if i were you, though, id wait for the inevitable Greatest Hits version and pick it up on the cheap. It was worth my $50 easily, but $20 would make it a no-brainer.
It's fucking fantastic. I loved pretty much every goddamn thing about it, but it's pretty much fucked my ability to enjoy the "traditional" JRPG, because I hate the goofiness, the shitty plot, the overacting, the predictable twists, etc.
But FFXII? Badass. I only hope other JRPGs can learn from it and stop doing so much stupid shit.
edit: As for why it's not greatest hits, IIRC, GH is usually something like a year after initial release, it's not even been 6 months.
You're welcome to your opinion, but you essentially just said "You can make special effort to trivialize the combat"
Whenever anyone complains that the gambit system makes things too easy, I always wonder why they don't just turn it off.
Yeah, it'd suck to have interactive games where all battles aren't identical like the Makai series, the Tales series, the Grandia series, the Baten Kaitos series, the Star Ocean series, the Valkyrie Profiles...
I mean, all you ever do in all of those is sit there and press X. They're all identical games.
And I hardly say spending 5 minutes to set up gambits that then last you for the next 40 hours of the game is particularly special effort.
Has to sell X number of copies over a nine month period. Then, after the profit dies off, it drops suddenly.
Ahh, I thought it was a total sales sort of thing. That's what I've always hated about Greatest Hits/Platinum/Player's Choice. They always wait until the last conceivable second to drop the price. I understand why, but it doesn't mae it any less annoying.
ok so you are saying go ahead and play it then. luckily i wont have to pay a dime since my roommate bought it when it came out. i beat super paper mario today so i think i will have to start FFXII tomorrow. thanks everyone
I'm going to have to say that it feels like every single aspect of FFXII was designed to be as lame as possible without actually being terrible, including the characters (especially Basche), plot, world design, license board, magic system (oh god action-delaying AoEs), and items. The gambit system does an excellent job of streamlining the hundreds to probably thousands of unnecessary battles you have to fight.
I don't feel like writing out a full explanation now, I'll do it tomorrow if someone wants it.
Edit: Seriously, Basche had the potential to be the best character in any Final Fantasy game, and all they had to do was stick with the introduction. But that wouldn't have been completely lame, though, so they clearly had to change it.
The game was good but aggravating. Aggravating in the sense that neither the plot nor characters were ever developed to the degree that they should have been. Plot was less a cohesive story and more a string of very loosely related but awesome events and for being the first ff where there wasn't at least 1 character I wanted to die in a raging inferno, they sure went without any significant developement over the course of the game. It sounds silly to basically be saying the game was good but not awesome enough, but that is basically what I'm saying. With better story it'd probably have been my favorite ff, as it is I'd place it at 4th on my list. That said though, deffinitely worth buying, even at $50. My completion time was 120 hours and I could have done 40 more finishing up hunts and sidequests.

XII is great, I'm playing it right now and having a blast.

Edit: I never do anything besides attack in RPG games, thats where this opinion comes from. MP = Overrated

Why isn't it Greatest Hits already?

I'm a sucker for stories that involve all aspects of a narrative, not just characters.

It was extremely refreshing. It was the Nestea of Final Fantasy, if you will.
Overall it was a pretty great game. I miss the turn based combat system, but it was still pretty great.

Jesus. Play some Xtreme Paint Brawl in between or your sensibilities are going to be completely fucked.
