i wish you could reliable get rogue robots spawning and being told where they were, rather than having to travel all they way into the compound and talk to the quest giver, who says "sorry I dont have any" and then you ask again and they say "ok here they are" all for like one robot.
Do the new robot types spawn randomly in any regular locations that werent DLC?
Are the stuff like sentrybots and robobrains unlocked through the quest or are they gated behind perks?
Neither, those are parts you can't build until you've looted it off of an enemy robot at least once. So you're unfortunately at the mercy of RNG if there's one you really want.
(I still haven't found a sentry torso.)
To get all the schematics unlocked at once you just have to
beat the main quest for the DLC. I dunno if allowing the Mechanist to live is the deciding factor since I didn't kill them.
The DLC questline was kinda short and underwhelming, but I love the additions to the game, so it's all good I suppose. Building robuts is awesome, and the new robot armor pieces are rad as fuck. The Assaultron helmet I picked up was not as good as my legendary synth Mk2 helmet, but it looks too awesome not to use. It's like an Iron Man helmet. Open when not in combat, but once you pull out your weapon *shink shink shink* the little slats slide close over your face and it looks badass.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

Automatron is basically
About a one or two hour quest with two big new dungeons, two new armor sets, some new robot themed weapons, a new settlement/home area and the new robot crafting system itself
.
All of which is pretty cool but wouldn't suggest anyone get it yet unless you're just really into making your own bots.
The robots are awesome and theres a good deal of variety to mix and match. I'm looking forward to seeing the modding community gets ahold of it.
Particularly a mod that allows the building of eyebot companions rather than just scavengers. Its the type I wanted the most but they're not available to tinker with as a battle bot.
Are your robots protected/essential like settlers?
Seems like it.
I've yet to see them go down but rather fall into just a downed state that requires a repair kit (robot version of stimpak revive).
My last bot was demolished in a dungeon to the point where he was crawling on his torso and hands but just completely put himself back together after combat ends.

Yeah it's an awesome filler dlc for people with the season pass, but I can't recommend getting it separately, it's just too expensive, unless you really want to build robbuts and have zero interest in getting a season pass
So I just started a new game to play Automatron, and I just got to Sanctuary as a settlement, and I realized I was going to have to go scrap everything. This is something that I decided would be too much effort and went looking for a mod that will let me push a button to effectively scrap everything in a settlement. I haven't had a chance to test the 2 mods I installed to see if either has this option (home maker and spring cleaning). Anyone know if there is something that will do that? the effort to walk around and scrap tires/barrels/whatever else in a settlement is just so time consuming I'd rather skip it.

there's a 'scrapall' console command.
Be warned, it will scrap the crafting benches, so you better be able to remake them.

You can just console them back, too. That's what I do.

Hope people have been stockpiling their junk because the robot workbench goes through adhesive like a bloated glowing one at Chuck E Cheese.
Having done some experimentation, I think the Mister Handy template (Handy body + thruster legs) is actually the best in terms of raw damage. Being able to equip them with five weapons total just makes them absolutely devastating.
Supposedly the Sentry Bot is actually a major letdown with poor pathfinding and surprisingly lackluster combat capabilities. I would find it ironic and hilarious if the humble Mr. Handy was actually a much more effective combat 'bot.
Maybe it's intentional, given what we know about the Pre-War military-industrial complex in the Fallout Universe.
"Oh, sure, we could just buy a bunch of cheap Mr. Handys and strap five automatic lasers or rocket launchers to each of them; they've also got that frictionless propulsion system and we can easily swap out their arms to do medical work or manual labor when they're not in battle. And it's true the Sentry Bot is huge, has traversal issues, overheats constantly, and has a very prominent weak point on its back when it's venting.
Well, they did eventually make a combat variant of the Handy, the Gutsy. But they left on the completely redundant extra two eyes, for some reason.
Sentries are great bullet sponges and packmules. But my character needs someone who can kill.
On a related note, if you unequip Codsworth's flamethrower or Curie's laser, you will never be able to reequip them again. Of course, there's no reason why you would want to, as both weapons are terrible, and you're much better off just giving them a buzzsaw on every leg.
I went the path of doing the scrapall console command, I see what you mean about needing to rebuild all the crafting benches. Its a bit of a pain, but infinitely less painful than collecting all that garbage by hand

It seems if you attach arms you can't attach ranged weapons to there dangly legs.
Has anyone else tried a 100% melee non-stealth playthrough without using VATS?
I'm not a particular fan of VATS myself, so I'm curious if it's at all viable.
I have on survival and it's probably the toughest build you can do, you'll be struggling for a good while, and power armour is mandatory. The game desperately needs shields for non-stealth melee characters because bullets just shred you

This seems to bear out. My first non-plot robot was a Mr. handy with one eye, two arms and three buzzsaws on his lower limbs. I think the arms take the place of the two extra eyes, but I'll have to fiddle with it later. But let's be honest here, three buzzsaws and two lasers is pretty goddamned useful.

I wanna say, "that's what you get for bringing a knife to a gunfight."

i for one agree that functional real-time melee combat would be a bridge too far in this zany, robot- and mutant-filled post-apocalyptic adventure
Was hoping I'd be able to hop into the DLC this evening, but it isn't looking like I'll have the chance.
How's the new Buzzsaw weapon? I'm a big fan of the Ripper, and I've been curious to hear if its better or worse in comparison. How extensively can it be modded?
For anyone using a UI mod, try this to stop the CTD when you complete Automatron's main quest and leave the building. As I understand it, the DLC creates a new map icon that UI mods don't have and it just plain crashes whenever you're in the vicinity because it pops up on your HUD. The mod itself swaps the icon and is a quick fix until the mod makers get around to it.
p.s. Make sure to load it before any map-altering mods.

Beep-boop sentrybot is cute, too.

Why bother with recruiting people when I can just have a whole little civilization of eccentric junkbots?
You can just console them back, too. That's what I do.
Me: Here, grow all these veggies so I can make starch.
Settlers: That we can then eat?
Me: No.
Don't think I'll be going there a lot until mods can open it up abit more.
It's a junk bench mod that scraps all your junk. No 'store all' button yet, but it's in the works.
I think I saw a mod for that.

Dem gams!

Might be abit rough on survival in the early going though.

On normal difficulty it's no problem tho

thats not photoshop, you can equip them with bowlers.

These bots, at least on Survival mode, really, really aren't fucking around, lol. Wow.
No, it's photoshopped.
