Really, the thing about Spark being able to be used as cover for the enemies isn't that big a point because Why are you letting them get that close?
Because you're a giant robot that cannot take cover(and as a low attack score) so you might as well put your gun right into their face? But then you forgot that enemies can use you as cover against yourself because the concept of having that happen is dumb?
Man, going for Exquisite Timing is weird. My usual plan is to hit max tech before I bother with plot stuff, unless Avatar is getting close. Now I'm back from the Blacksite before I even know what Avatar is.

Regarding the PS4 version of XCOM 2, is it possible to totally avoid the Alien Commander stuff? It doesn't sound well implemented, and goofy at best.

Leave the Ruler DLC enabled but don't do the mission. If you disable the DLC I think they just randomly show up?
Huh, so it's just like a DLC sidequest you can ignore? Sounds weird, but workable. Thanks!
Basically if the DLC is enabled you get a trigger mission. If the DLC is disabled the stuff just shows up...
Problem: "stuff just shows up" means absolutely nothing for Shen's gift(you can do a proving grounds project to get the robot). And absolutely everything for Rulers (alien rulers show up in missions semi-randomly)

This right here is the confusion. Those checkboxes aren't "enable / disable DLC", they are "enable / disable DLC-related story missions."
Disabling the DLC cannot be done from in-game. You can disable them in the Steam UI but I'm not sure how you'd do it on the PS4.

Semi-randomly means that once one shows up, they are in every mission until all three are dead. And they are God Damned awful to deal with. They seem to start showing up about the time you should be getting to the first Blacksite.
Also, seems that Beaglerush has finished XCOM 2: Live and Legendary.

Not every mission. Just most. I've had rulers skip a mission now and then, which can be a bit of a tease when you get all dressed up with DOTs, freezes, and free actions.

I can't remember a mission without them, but I'm not playing with it on this run through. Although I didn't deal with the Berserker at all since I killed it with a Repeater shot on overwatch as soon as it showed up the first time.
They definitely skip missions. And I don't believe they overlap, but I might be wrong on that one; you shouldn't be dealing with the Viper and the Berserker at the same time.
They are somewhat random in which missions they show up on but will never overlap with each other, one has to die before the next will show up.

Oh! Also, if you are on a mission where you extract (like a VIP or Facility) and you kill the ruler, you don't get the corpse, which means you can't make the special armour from it, so bear that in mind. I've not been caught out by this, but I imagine it might be particularly frustrating if it happens.

Actually, I think the game is kind enough to give you the corpse anyway.

I miss my flying Archangel snipers in this game.
Then again, my current sniper has 77 kills by himself.

I've killed the Viper Ruler, how and when do the others show up?
If it's like my game I rage quit out of b/c of them, immediately afterwards on a VIP extract timed mission with a mixed crew of mostly low-mid level guys due to massive losses/injuries caused by the previous fucking ruler.

I met the Berserker Queen Ruler just after mindcontrolling a Codex on a Raid the Train mission, she has been trying to punch the Codex for like 3 turns now, still unsuccessful.
Ruler armor looks awful though, my Ranger looks like this guy now.
EDIT: Gave my Ranger the R.A.G.E armor instead and handed the Serpent one to my sniper, after noticing you could change helmets and colors while using them, they look all right.
Yeah, always change the color and hat on the snake armor. The scarf still goes crazy half the time in the Skyranger, but that's more funny than annoying. The RAGE armor is kinda embarrassing, but it packs a heavy weapon AND a free action melee attack, so I'll wear the fucking thing anyway.
The Icarus armor is sweet as fuck, though. I drink the tears of panicked Archons.

If he gets away, is his health reduced the next time?
All damage done to rulers are carried over to the next time they show up, so yes.
And yeah, Archon Ruler sucks the most, especially since it's presence pretty much means everyone who came is going to be in the med bay for at least a week.

By the time the Archon ruler shows, I can usually cause him to flee in a round or so. I find that the Berserker Queen has the worst difficulty-to-gear progression ratio.
Yeah. When you meet the Berserker, you're probably in that awkward phase where you have a couple exo suits, some mag weapons, but maybe a couple of people are still on ballistics and you've got no real special weapons. When the Archon rolls up, I'm usually at or close to end-game team composition.

Also the Berserker Queen just LOVES to show up on 12 turn extractions for me; typically standing right in front of the evac zone. So not only am I low on juice from taking the rest of the map, she has a chance to knock each of my team unconscious AS they run to evac. Plus half the time one of my guys is carrying a Dark VIP and can't even shoot or take free actions.
Yeah, she pretty much always shows up on that first VIP mission. Just the way the timing tends to work out.
In other news: frig, Alien Cypher cost me Exquisite Timing. Had to go intel hunting to reach the territory with the gate, which put me two days over the limit with the remaining research needed. Most annoying.

The catch is you can't upgrade the special weapons without doing the mission, but that's small change if you didn't want to deal with them anyway.

Yeah the bosses have persistent health. Unless you put some mods in their health will be where you last left them.
