I mean, video podcasts became a thing in the same way that talk radio became news shows. There's a format and a market for it in stuff like online panel shows, but much like how talk radio stuck around, it didn't supplant podcasts because audio-only formats fill a different niche. The one where people want something to listen to while their eyes are otherwise occupied, like long drives or tedious jobs.
I would also argue that a lot of Lets Plays are basically visual podcasts, albeit ones where you aren't watching the 'casters themselves.

My favorite Nick Robinson joke was him not knowing who John Candy was on the previous one. Not as a "ha ha funny" joke but as a "Nick Robinson is a" joke. (Just kidding, of course, Nick's fine, but Griffin's incredulity was both funny and gratifying as I also found it really frustrating on some visceral level).
