Hey, I got one of those crap AIM accounts too. I need to talk to some people that refuse to use anything else. But man oh man I mean we know that AOL is a crap company and is the bane of the internet. Their actual service is pretty much a ghetto, but people give them hope by sticking with their instant messenger. We really need to stop doing that.
Because today I get this email that pretty much says "HA HA LOL WII IS POPULAR LET US RIP IT OFF"
Like srsly. Gtalk. Not that hard a switch. If we get everyone off AIM then the world is a better place. (I mean sure we're still talking IM hegemony all I'm saying is let if someone needs to be king of the hill for god sakes make it not AOL.)
I was just at a tech conference the other day where WeeWorld was accidentally referred to as a Wii site, and one of the WeeWorld devs wandered up to the stage and grumpily insisted that their service was unconnected to Wii, and by the way actually came first. I haven't checked, but I'm guessing the WeeWorld site came up before the Wii came out, but after Miis were unveiled.
Either way, I'm guessing some sort of lawsuit is in the works.

Why? Avatars have been around almost as long as the internet. That includes little dumb cartoony ones.
Oh yes, let us rise up against AOL. Because as well all know, Nintendo has never taken another company's idea and incorporated it into their own product. Nope, never happened.
Why would she want to show a drawing (cartoon? ha!) like that if she can show her pic.
Also, nose and eyebrows seem to be missing. And the hair seems to have been a picture in it's previous life, before it was run over by photoshop to maim it into a drawing.

Nonono, not avatars, but the names.
Were they actually CALLED WeeMees before the Wii came out?

Were they actually CALLED WeeMees before the Wii came out?
In November 2006, WeeWorld sued Nintendo of America alleging copyright infringement of the WeeMee name by Nintendo's Mii avatars on their Wii video game system. However, in March 2007, WeeWorld moved to have the case dismissed without prejudice in order to focus on litigation in the UK, where WeeWorld has most of its business. However, Nintendo moved to have the case dismissed with prejudice in order to prevent further legal action. The result of the decision is still pending.

From wiki. The more you know.
Yes, but when were these Wee things first announced? Before or after the Miis were?

Exactly what does AOL gain from me using their servers to relay chat messages?

seriously, way before the Wii was, and further before Miis.
Define "around before the Wii." If they had that stupid name before Miis were announced, then fine. If they came up with that stupid name AFTER the Miis were announced in an attempt to drum up an attention-getting lawsuit, there's the rub.
We realize Nintendo did not invent the avatar. That's not what we're bitching about.

They've been around longer than the announcement of the Revolution, never mind the decision to rename it the Wii or to have Miis as part of their service. In fact, I'd say they came out around about the time the GameCube was launched, roughly (that might be a slight exageration, but yeah, fucking years).

Yes, the WeeMees were around well before the wii. The company is called WeeWorld, and they've actually sued Nintendo for copyright infringement.

Well, as long as WeeWorld wasn't operating under some other name previously, okay then.
So it's possible (given the similarity in name and concept) that Nintendo stole the idea? Hmmm.
yeah. Oh, and when WeeWorld tries to drop the lawsuit, Nintendo expects them to pay for their legal fees. Because, you know, Nintendo "broke"the copyright and WeeWorld having the audacity to call them on it is inexcusable.

Well, backing down from the lawsuit can be considered admitting that they didn't infringe copyright, and thus Nintendo is entitled to fees spent defending a specious lawsuit.

I doubt it. Miyamotos been trying to get Mii into a Nintendo console it off the ground since the NES days. I mean, they may have nicked the name but not the idea.

sad, but true. These things have been everywhere for some time.
They obviously copied from Nintendo reverse retroactively

how is this stealing Nintendo's IP?
WeeMee?
It isn't rocket science.

I did make an oversight. But it would be ridiculous of me to apologize for not being aware of such a totally retarded concept.
They should, like a good dog, just lay down and die in the ditch.
