Having bought Genji: Dawn of the Samurai based on the same friends that told me about God of War, I reluctantly picked it up. From the back it seems like God of War and Prince of Persia and the cover seems cool. Not having played yet, could anyone tell me if it will be like God of War (which I didn't like very much) or more like Prince of Persia (which I did like) or a mixure of both?
I can't for the life of me understand why someone would buy a game then come on the PA boards and ask if its good. Anyone else think thats just kind of retarded? If you weren't sure about the game you should of asked before you bought it. However since you already own it put it in the fucking machine and try it. Then come make a thread.

I bought it since I wanted something to play after Shining Tears (which I am completing) that is more actiony. SInce they stopped making Prince of Persia I basically had nothing else except to replay it. GoW I was expecting to be similar but it wasn't so I bugged them and found out that this game was in thier collection. Since they are the ones who told me of Prince of Persia (since I only played the PC ones long ago) and are the FPS and Adventure players, I trusted them in thier judgement and saying that "so and so game is good". I am just asking the PA board whether or not they accept that or its going to be like another God of War, which I will keep in it its case until I would like to be tortured agian.
How is the PS3 version? Obviously if this is nothing like GoW and something I like, it will be another futher peg on me buying the PS3 now that I have both the DS and the PSP.

Not even the most loyal PS3 fans would ever put Genji as a reason to buy a PS3. It's decidedly meh.

It's just flat out mediocre in all respects. Gamespot gave it a 6.4.

Both Genji games are pretty average "press buttons a lot to kill guys" games, very much in line with Onimusha. The difference is that Onimusha is more memorable. The second Genji isn't that horrible, it just doesn't have the flair that the first did in spite of shiny graphics. It's a rote sequel.
If you like beat-em-ups with swords and some timing based slow motion stuff, you'll enjoy them, but they're not absolute must plays in my opinion. I own both of them, and enjoy them, but they're not so amazing that I have to play them all the time. PoP and GoW are both more technically sound, and more aesthetically interesting to me. And most importantly, more memorable.
All that said, just try the game! It doesn't suck horribly...and you might have some fun.

Not enough giant enemy crabs.
Orrr, too many giant enemy crabs, making it too difficult for the player to hit their weak spot for massive damage. Even with real time weapon changing.

Onimusha was fun and I did like it, so I guess is Genji is like that I wouldn't mind playing it. Thanks for you help.

No problem. Onimusha and Genji are quite similar in many gameplay aspects...however when it comes to story Onimusha's is a little more over-the-top and chaotic. Genji's is loosely based on an ancient Japanese story, and I quite like it actually. If you liked Onimusha, you will indeed have some fun.

The game is very Meh. Not bad, not great, has an awful camera, the Girl is too fucking slow, and you will always want to play as the main guy exclusively because he's the best character in the game. It looks nice I just wish I could have controlled the camera that would have helped a little.

God forbid a kid likes something that isn't cool.
What does whether or not he likes it, or if it is or isn't cool have to do with my post? I was commenting on the fact that the kid went out and bought a game off a friends recommendation. Then instead of putting it in his machine and giving it a try he came here to ask for some sort of validation of his purchase. I wouldn't have said a word if he would have made a thread saying, "I just got game X and it sucks/is cool because of Y. What do you shitheads think?"
All in all, Genji is a decent game. Well worth the $10 I paid for it.
I never saw the video that spawned the giant enemy crab phenomenon, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were supposed to say the game was based on an actual japanese legend, or something like that, but accidentally said "history" instead. And people would rather think that Sony honestly claims there were giant crabs in ancient Japan because, well, "lol sony!"

What they actually said was "Genji is based on actual, historical battles in ancient Japan. And now, here's a giant enemy crab!"
Even if you're not lol Sony, you gotta admit that's funny.
Yeah, Genji is a good game, just nothing special. Pretty much a straight-up beat-em up with good graphics (well, good for PS2... i'm surprised Genji 2 looks almost the same on the PS3).
And Rigor, to be fair, the topic title is "the Genji series," not Genji 1 or 2 specifically.
Genji 1 is a great game that is let down by its length. If you're looking for an Onimusha replacement (after Capcom decided to ruin the series with Dawn of Dreams) then you're looking in the right place.
The PS3 sequel though? It seems like they fixed the game length but then decided to completely ruin the camera.
BiggNife: Uh, most of the people I've heard from say the PS3 version is one of the best looking games on the system.

Who told you that? EB Clerks?
"oh maaaan, also, this game Genji. The graphics is crazy."
Have you actually played the game? Or are you basing your comments on "zomg crabs in japan olol"? Seriously, while I have heard the game has problems (namely, the atrocious camera), the graphics is one thing I've heard a lot of good things about (from a lot of people with PS3's).

I was pretty much agreeing with you. Why the hell WOULD you play a game and then ask if it was good unless you were making sure your own opinion agreed with the popular masses?

Having played the PS3 version quite a bit, I'll say that yes the graphics are nice, both aesthetically and technologically. The camera however, is pulled in much closer most of the time in order to show off the graphics, and as such makes things a little more difficult than they need to be sometimes. The camera in the first game, in general, has a wider angle on the action.
