Whoa! It's the newest Fire Emblem game! Or games? I dunno, but here's a quick FAQ to get you situated.
Three games? What is going on?
Fire Emblem Fates has three games: Birthright, Conquest, and Relevations. They are based on which kingdom your character aligns with (Hoshido, Nohr, or Neither), and are intended to be complete, standalone experiences. By buying all three you will get your money's worth: people have done the math and the raw chapters per dollar is about the same as Awakening.
So what are the differences?Conquest: Linear like old-school Fire Emblems, meaning experience and other resources are finite. It has also more variance in map objectives, and is all-around a harder game. Also, if you wanna be a gay dude, Niles is here.
Birthright: More open like Awakening, giving you the opportunity to grind for more XP and cash if you're tired of getting your ass kicked. Also the maps are simpler in design. If you want be a girl and kiss another girl, then Rhajat is in this game.
Revelations: The "true ending" game, it has the grinding opportunities of Birthright while having more complex maps like Conquest. In addition, a lot of the version-exclusive characters can intermingle here. Intended to be played after at least one of the other two versions.
How do I buy it?
Buy a version (via store or eShop) and then inside the game itself you will have the option to buy other paths at 50% the regular price. Every game starts the same until Chapter 6, at which point you choose the path that determines what game you're in. If you haven't bought a path then you can't pick it. Revelations is super special and releases March 10th unless you got the 3-in-1 Special Edition, which is sold out just about everywhere.
Do not buy the other versions from stores or eShop. All three versions cost $80 if you do it right, so if you buy both Conquest and Birthright at Gamestop you're basically pissing away 20 bucks. Are there babies?
Characters can have kids just like in Awakening, except kids are tied to dads instead of moms. Please note that marrying either gay character means no kid...because using magic to explain why Billy has Two Dads is haaaard.
Permadeath scares me.
Fear not, crit-haters! In addition to a casual setting that revives allies at the end of a chapter, there's a new Phoenix mode that brings back fallen allies every TURN. So if you just want to focus on your shipping charts instead of your war strategies, then you're solid. If you wanna try permadeath but hate to commit, then fear not: you can switch it off mid-campaign!
Anything else new?
Weapons no longer break, they instead have pros and cons to stats like Bronze is weak but accurate. Pairing up has been split into defensive and offensive versions, so you can pair up to gain defensive stats, or attack next to an ally for a chance at them getting a free attack. Enemies can also do this, so watch yourself.
There's also My Castle, which is a huge feature that has you plopping down buildings and fighting off invaders for goodies. You can also play dress up with characters now!
Do you fight for JUSTICE?

Well.
I'll just say goodbye to my thread, then.
From what I understand, you don't have to drop down to base classes to learn the skills if you just change to the promoted version? Like if you go from something to Paladin, you end up picking up the Cavalier skills without having to downgrade that low?
What's the right thread to post in
Pretty glad that I am playing in casual
This will be here until I receive an apology or Weedlordvegeta get any consequences for being a bully
This is amazing
which would have made sticking with classic mode a lot harder to bear
Yeah this is especially useful for my repeated attempts to play the DLC in Awakening
I can do it, I know it
I just need to actually be aware of what enemies are on the field, which I... really don't need to do for the most part in Awakening
This will be here until I receive an apology or Weedlordvegeta get any consequences for being a bully
best class, best outfits
This is correct, though you still only get skills at a rate of one per levelup, starting with the lowest-leveled one in your queue
If you can get through Rogues and Redeemers 3 even once at the end of the game, you'll get LIMIT BREAKER, which raises all your stat caps by 10

I really like the little camera turn when two characters are fighting
it's a small touch but a nice one
Iiiiiii don't know if this is true but I don't have the motivation to check
they're all just sorta "earnest friendly person" aside from kaze and rinkha
but then i'm not super far yet

Oh don't worry
Takumi breaks that mould with the quickness
Edit: you cannot hide your shame
I guess Sully is just destined to be the Ultimate Badass all the time with no off switch (like I didn't already know that).

Oh no Effie is Super Sully, like if Kjelle had finished growing up and then did the fusion dance with Oswin
Huh, thanks for checking for me
For some reason being told you have a weak swing and then Little Princess feels way worse than the dude version even though its the same line
What are you asking about specifically
I love Sully so much
they don't move the turn they show up

right now I'm at the point where basically all the kids are recruitable
... but I need to level up the parents so I make sure the kids have good skills
In the first scene where you meet Effie
She thinks this is probably because she had weighted down her armor with too many training stones
because she has no stat under 20 for me
