I've never been big on the competitive scene in Pokemon either (though I find it fascinating), but I did do a lot of PvPing during my play through of X/Y. The much improved multiplayer/online aspect in X/Y made it so dang convenient to fight random people without having to worry about min/maxing along the way.
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
I've also been thinking about getting into competitive battling with Sun & Moon. I'm not too fazed about the whole "set up" part of it since that has continuously been getting easier with each generation - what I am worried about is the actual battling part. The current meta seems so damn complicated that getting any good at it seems like a pretty steep challenge.
I have never done the battling thing before in Pokemon. I've always just played the story, collected them, and then stopped.
I'd like to change that in Sun/Moon. I'll probably try my hand at some EV training and whatever other min/maxing there is. I might try to actually put together some competitive teams and see how I do at competitive battling.
Every generation I tell myself "this is the one where I'll really put in the effort". It never works. I got close in x/y but the tedium of breeding and hell even the battle mansion or whatever it was called put me off it after a bunch of battles.
Given I have less free time than before, and I feel bad begging for other people to breed stuff for me I may just go with whatever I have and do the really simple stuff (aka readily available tms etc). I know the usual answer is to ride the bike in circles while doing something else but that isn't an option for a variety of reasons.
I've been playing through ORAS lately and really enjoying it. I have a strangely focused OCD that kept me from playing until I had a trainer ID# that I was happy with. The compulsions generally have not overlapped with my everyday life but after 1000 or more restarts to get a trainer number that my brain is content with... I can finally start playing despite buying the cartridge on day one.
My team is a Swampert (just got the mega stone, woo-hoo), Swellow, cosplay Pikachu, Linoone(pick-up forever and HM slave), and Tentacruel.
Now that I am getting further in, I'll start filling out my team with Pokémon of interest before the elite 4. Thinking maybe Starmie, Heracross. Taking Tentacruel and Cosplay Pika out. Linoone can stay for his utility. Might pick up a wheezing. Once I unlock the post game, all bets are off.
I need to find my copy of X. It has my shiny ideal nature Pikachu with solid IVs and a lightball hanging out.
My brother has a ditto farm for IV combos but I am not sure how much I really want to mess with that. I'll probably focus on pokedex completion and "good enough" stats.
Woot! For the first time ever, my Trainer Club account email worked properly and I got a shiny mewtwo code. My small harem of Mewtwos dating back to FireRed are going to be jelly of the new girl.
I wonder if we're getting a remake this 7th generation...
I don't really think Gen IV would benefit too much from a make over, unlike how the three previous ones did. minor bump in graphics and a few QoL improvements, maybe, but nothing awesome like firered or ORAS.

Maybe complete the Gen 3 remakes and do Red/Green again? Or just go the Gen 5 route and go with Sun 2 and Moon 2.
I remember really liking gen 4, and my oldest pokemon is from Diamond (a Torterra named Chelsup), so I'd be excited for remakes.
In other news, the Unova Classic competition has been announced. It's a Triple Battle tournament with a Zen Mode Darmanitan as the entry reward.
Oh! Also, ability capsules are now available on Pokemon Global Link for 5000 pokemiles a piece. I just got two and am Wonder Trading so I can get more.
Honestly, the main reason I hope they continue with remakes is so I get to play around in Unova some more. It's my favorite region in the Pokemon world so far, and the fact that Reshiram, Kyurem and Zekrom were once one Pokemon provides an obvious avenue for a new transformation gimmick.
I would like a huge game that includes the first several regions re-imagined. Same routes but different art and design. They could enhance a lot of older regions, tie them into each other and create a pretty big world. Only problem would be pacing it.

Hell, Gold/Silver had the original Kanto region for post game fun.

What I think we need to start asking isn't necessarily what will come after Sun and Moon, but what will be the first "mainline" pokemon game on NX. Would they do a Gen IV remake as that? Or new games entirely? Maybe they skip the remakes for this gen and do a Gen IV remake on NX after the true successor to Sun/Moon.
Or maybe they do Sun/Moon 2 on NX?
Lots of possibilities, but after Sun/Moon I don't think we'll get another "mainline" Pokemon game on 3DS.
I was under the impression that NX is not replacing the 3DS. I thought it was replacing the Wii U? I mean, using the new 3DS still gives room for improvement.
I'd expect them to either do Pokémon star/galaxy/planet/whatever unless they come up with an idea they like better than expanding the new region. I feel like that is what happened with X and Y. Z was slated for development but later replaced by Sun and Moon.

The rumor is that NX will replace both 3DS and Wii U. It will be a portable console.

and if Nintendo outright claims that NX isn't replacing the 3DS when they announce it I would be willing to put a lot of money on this being the same as the DS launch.
Remember the DS wasn't supposed to replace the Game Boy. It was going to be a 3rd pillar beside the Game Boy and Gamecube. (i.e. we want to see if this actually works before retiring the game boy name).

Why not? They've been perfectly happy to proceed as planned and not rush next gen upgrades in the past, which is why we got Emerald after the DS came out and Black/White 2 over a year after the 3DS came out, why would they suddenly change that now?

Those consoles were both backwards-compatible, though. Is anyone expecting the NX to play 3DS cards?

They have only ever done 1 remake per gen so I don't see how it would be skipping it exactly. Most likely whenever they have a successor to the 3DS they will follow the exact same playbook they always have. New gen when its appropriate, and a gen IV remake eventually with probably a third version though they have kind of thrown a curveball on that one this gen.

Was backwards compatibility the main reason why they continued to support the GBA/DS after the new hardware came out? I always thought it was because they'd get better sales on the old hardware and they just preferred to take their time on new hardware.
So, big thing here from the supposed new console is that it has the one screen? That's OK I guess but I'm not fond of the idea that I can't fold my handheld to cover my screen. The second screen is really nice for games like Pokemon but it's far from required.
I guess I will just have to see. I feel like the "new 3ds" just came out and don't know if I like where things are going.
I assume the pokebank is set up to evolve with the Nintendo market and work cross system since it is an account type thing.
EDIT: To be fair, I was in the "two screens lol" camp with the first DS. I didn't early adopt but the DS light had me sold and the library was robust by that point. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt I spose.
EDIT #2: Question about this Mewtwo event. I searched for play events and there are only a few pokemon league events going on remotely close to me. Do these still qualify?

Yeah, the downside about having so many events in Pokemon is that some of them are "blink and you'll miss it". Even though Pokemon posted about it on all of their social media several times, tons of people still didn't know that the Mewtwo distribution was going to be a reward for participating in the competitive season- there is only so much you can do*! The upside is that there's always another event just around the corner...
The moral of the story is never blink.
*A thing they could ACTUALLY DO is create an in-game method to find new events and register for Pokemon GL tournaments but that is crazy and too convenient and will never happen.
With all the Pokemon GO hubbub, I have been thinking of making a Pokemon GO team. Obviously, Snorlax and Vaporeon would be the stars. Perhaps an appearance by Lapras? And I believe Pidgeot is the obvious choice for the mega, but maybe I could run normal Pidgeot and have Mega Beedrill? There are a few options, but I want to really hammer in the Pokemon GO flavor by featuring the overpowered Pokemon and the omnipresent Pokemon. I'll report more as I think more about it.

No word on a 3ds bundle that I've seen so far.
As for the steelbook edition, I saw it as an Amazon exclusive in the US.
I'm pretty sure the Mewtwo event is over as they are starting the next year of events. I may be wrong, though.
