The saloon is a fairly low-key place. It's not like some rowdy townie dive bar with people hooking up and picking fights in the parking lot. It's just a small-town pub.
Most of the people in there are obviously just there because there's nothing else to do in Pelican town after dark except have a bonfire or something. The only people actually there to get drunk are Pam and Shane (and honestly I can hardly blame the latter, his life sucks). Sebastian, Abigail and Sam don't even appear to be there drinking, they just hang out around the pool table/arcade (hell, half the time Sebastian's mom/stepdad is in the next room). Clint's just there because he wants to be around Emily. Leah lives outside town so she goes there to get some social time. Etc.
It is a bit depressing that the saloon is the only place in town to do something after dark unless you hang out in the graveyard like Abigail. Even if it's not just a place to fuel rampant drinking problems and Gus and Emily are good people, it shows just how in the dumps economically the town has become.
Actually, I wish that more residents would use the spa when it opens up outside of the few scenes for some villagers with it.
That's kinda the point, though, isn't it? Getting away from a hypercapitalist ratrace is the whole reason your character deserts the city in the first place, and "defeating" the encroaching representation of those values (the shiny, sterile, soulless new dollar store, which is putting Pierre out of business and making Shane's life a living hell, among other things) is one of the game's overarching goals.
And, now that I think about it, there's plenty to do in town after dark, that you see people doing, besides going to the saloon. They just don't involve spending money (beyond the initial investment for whatever items necessary to do the things they're doing).
Sebastian likes to hang out on the docks at night. Abigail likes to play her flute under a tree in the rain, or just play her Super Nintendo. Penny reads books from the library. Harvey talks on his ham radio set (or whatever it is). Maru looks through her telescope. Leah draws and walks in the woods. Haley's got her hobbies; Alex lifts weights, Sam hangs out with his pals, practices guitar, and plays with his little brother. Caroline and Pierre cook for each other. George grouchily watches TV, Evelyn cooks. Elliott writes, Willy goes fishing, Linus... does Linus stuff.
Really the only people who have no hobbies outside of pub attendance are Clint, Pam, and Shane.
The town would definitely be boring for a certain kind of person, but honestly I grew up in an area where we didn't even have the bar so PT seems like it could be worse to me.
As to the spa, whenever I go there I feel like I'm a kid again playing a game on my SNES. Not because of the obvious nostalgia triggers, but because it aggravates the hell out of me that there's that neat-looking solarium thing on the roof of it that as far as I can tell there is no way to access. I do wish the rest of the villagers used it occasionally, though. Seems like it'd be a neat dialogue trigger.

Re: Shane and Jojamart:
Driving Joja out of town and putting Shane out of work made me feel bad. Morris is a bastard but I like how various characters make it clear that Jojamart has better prices for the many townspeople on a budget and employs multiple residents whereas Pierre only involves people in Pierre's family. It was a nice touch given how I personally tend to despise shopping at Walmart but for some of my poorer friends their inexpensive groceries keep them from having to choose between eating and rent.
Uhm....
Wakes up...walks over, hugs the kid, tosses the baby in the air, maru isnt anywhere to be found in the house... I walk outside to find her on the porch. I give her a kiss, talk her up a bit, see i have mail.
"Why don't you come over at night, after 8pm...I have something to show you - Abigail"
*Glances up at maru.....This is a trap*

Do we get actual dialogue shifts and behavior pattern changes when that happens? I haven't gotten that far yet.
Unless it really drives him into a downward spiral I'm going to have a really hard time feeling bad about pushing Joja out of business, at least on Shane's account. He clearly hates his job so much, they pay him horrible wages with bad hours, it's causing him to hate his entire life and hugely feeding into his drinking problem. I rarely hear him talk about anything else. He might actually be better off pitching a tent with Linus at this point.

Yeah, his dialogue adjust to reflect being unemployed. He hates his life even more. I think he actually spends even more time in the saloon afterwards.
If time stopped upon entering the spa I'd probably use it but yeah as it stands it's not worth the time cost
Perhaps the worst thing about it is that slow walk you do after you pass through the changing room. I used the spa once and decided it wasn't worth it.
I have a mod that (among other things) freezes time indoors like Harvest Moon does. The spa is pretty great then, yeah. Otherwise I used it a couple times but once you get a few star drops its pretty worthless.

Started up a new file to leverage the knowledge gained from my first runthrough. I'd say I've done fairly well, got the greenhouse halfway through my first Fall.
Now I've got that done, I suppose it's about time to slow down and worry about things other than the pantry bundles.
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

I'm almost done with my second winter. The first person I got a 10-star rating with was Linus, and it looks like Wizard is next. I'm probably working towards courting Maru for marriage, although I definitely have to say that the relationships in this game interest me the least. Not that they're bad, of course; there's definitely some neat cutscenes in there.

Farm continues to progress nicely, need to start plopping down more artisan good processors at some point, probably stuff them into a barn there by my house or something.

Has anyone else run into a bug with watering since the last update? I've had almost a dozen single plots that very much got watered every day that lost a day of growth somehow.
I really want a mechanism for moving buildings. I've become pretty dissatisfied with the placement of my deluxe barn and coop and horse stable, but the cost and time it would take to correct this is just too prohibitive.

Yeah, I think Robin could stand to expand her services. My building placement is not great, but I also don't feel I need to do much more with it at this point. I guess I should make that slime building thing, but I feel like I've got a pretty good source of income with my current farm already.
Still need to get another dinosaur egg so I can hatch one, though! I feel dumb for selling the second one I had. I didn't even think about saving it for when I made a coop.
It would also be nice if animals weren't treated the same as debris in terms of where you can build. When I was building a second silo, I had to back out and wait a few seconds before trying again because a cow just happened to be standing where I wanted to build it.
What's the trick in getting non-fruit trees to grow? Got two space between them, haven't grown an inch in 15 winter days.
Maple, Pine, and Oak trees won't grow during winter.
This is true but I think they just don't visually grow. I had a forest spring up at the start of spring after putting down a bunch of those seeds during the last couple days of the previous fall after panicking because my wood supplies were low and I had nothing to cut down. Of course then I found out how cheap wood is to just buy :P
I thought that pine trees do grow during winter? I could definitely be misremembering, though.
Fruit saplings grow but oak/elm/pine don't visually change all season
Ah yeah, that makes sense now.
Also, I planted one of each type of fruit tree inside the greenhouse just as the last patch went live. That particular patch stopped you from being able to plant the trees there, but if you had already planted them there they'll still grow and bear fruit. I lucked out with that one. They all matured for me today. Trees growing right out of that tiled greenhouse floor!
It'd be nice if he let you upgrade the greenhouse to make more room.
Finally got some Large goat milk from my goats so i was able to unlock the greenhouse and at the same time i unlocked the bus repairs, went home to bed (with almost full energy) woke up with mail saying i was 'found by a joja member incapacitated' and short 1000g... but i went to sleep in my bed at like, 10pm and i also hadn't stepped inside the mine that entire day...

Sounds like a classic Joja shakedown. Consider it a warning.
The fair year 2 is coming up. Anybody know if there is a cap on the grange score? I'm tempted to see how high I can get it, just putting purple items in.
I think I should have some starfruit wine, ancient wine, and ancient jelly ready by then. I can toss in a diamond, and should probably have a truffle oil, maybe a pomegranate wine and jelly as well. What else can I put in?

There's an article on the wiki but it's basically variety, quality, and price that get you points. So, a high dollar fish, a gold or iridium bar, and a fruit and vegetable would give you more variety.

According to the wiki, the score caps out at 107. My last run through the fair I had 106, and that's purely because my fish was phoned in instead of taking the time to hunt down an actually valuable one.

I finished my second winter last night. Today I loaded up my save and was greeted by the ghost of grandpa, who basically said I did everything perfectly. When I visited the shrine, I got a statue of perfection. I think spending the winter giving everyone gifts really paid off there.
I still have to complete the museum. There's a lot of stuff missing there.

Hmm, probably won't bother then. Last year with just a gold ingot, a diamond, a decent fish, and an ancient jelly I hit like 98.
It will never a drop a seed on its own, but you can build a seed machine and throw the fruit in there. You'll get 1-3 ancient seeds from it. Or on rare occasion a mixed seed.

Hmmm, I don't have a seed machine recipe. Aaaand, I think I may have rid myself of my last ancient fruit. Ah well.
What's the deal with the ancient fruit? I planted mine in year 1 summer, it died in winter, and never dropped a seed for me.
Also..the grange thing...I'm seeming to understand it requires a fish to be optimal? Seems...odd.
Takes 28 days to grow. Then drops Ancient Fruit every 7 days. You should've gotten 3 Ancient Fruit from it, based on your timing. Did you forget to water it?
Grange points are awarded based on cost, quality, and variety. You don't have to have fish to win, but to have a maximized score, technically you would have to.

You will probably find more ancient seeds as you go. I definitely found a few. I don't have to worry about my ancient fruit plants dying anymore, though. Hooray for the greenhouse. I've got a ton of them growing in there thanks to the seed machine.
In barely-related real-life news, my wife and I have rented out a small garden plot at a local park and plan to grow some vegetables this year! My first time doing actual gardening. I'm fully expecting to mess this up. Hopefully we'll at least get some carrots out of it. If only it were as simple as the gardening in Stardew Valley.
