Takes 28 days to grow. Then drops Ancient Fruit every 7 days. You should've gotten 3 Ancient Fruit from it, based on your timing. Did you forget to water it?

Grange points are awarded based on cost, quality, and variety. You don't have to have fish to win, but to have a maximized score, technically you would have to.

Yeah, I think I got 3 ancient fruit. But based on the ancient fruit seed recipe I also got, I was expecting to get a seed at some point. I was not aware of the existence of a seed machine, so I didn't keep an ancient fruit.

Oof. That sucks. I think ConcernedApe increased the Ancient Seed artifact drop-rate though. I had a helluva time finding my first two, but have gotten like 8 more since.

I haven't seen any since my first couple way back in year 1. Fortunately I've got a set of 8 outside that have been running most of the year and producing enough seeds to have a full set of 24 in my greenhouse, with another 10 seeds in storage waiting for enough seeds/room to start another plot.

@MadPen the recipe is basically so if you find any more of the artifact you can turn them into plantable seeds. You can rarely get the artifact seed from chopping bushes with your sword, and once you get the seed machine, a small random chance from any fruit you put in there.

I wish he'd do some tinkering on the music. There's some minor technical issues (like how the music is apparently hard-coded not to loop - WHY??), but also just some aesthetic stuff.

I rarely spend time in the mines because of this very reason. It's your one opportunity in the game to do some "adventuring", and you'd think the music would reflect that... but the soundtrack down there is so downbeat and depressing. The sections in the cold portions are particularly bad, it sounds like somebody just died.

I've looked into mods but haven't really found anything that tickled my fancy. If somebody modded in the Secret of Mana soundtrack I'd be all over it.

So about halfway through Winter 1, with about 30,000 gold. No greenhouse, and not super close to having one. Should I be planting trees outside? If so, should I do it now, or wait for Spring?

If you have the cash, go ahead and plant them, at least your spring ones. Fruit trees still grow during the winter.

You don't have to have a fish.
There are 9 categories, and the variety portion of your score is maximized by containing 6 different categories

Thanks for the tips, everybody. I know I could google all this crap, but I've ended up spoiling stuff for myself a little too much that route.

I spent some time trying to catch the last legendary fish I need today. It's really hard! I hooked it 4 times or so. I don't know if I'll be able to do it before spring ends, but the season is young! I can only do it on rainy days though. Hopefully I'll have a few more of those.

    Get you some +fishing food.

The legendary fish are ridiculous. Even with maxed-out fishing skills and the best gear if they really want to get away from you they will.

You basically have to get lucky and just hook them enough times to learn their general pattern and finally get them on an attempt where they don't move around too much.

Rank 10 fishing and a trap bobber makes it far, far easier.

I have both of those things, but this last fish is a pain in the ass. Guess I should seek out that fishing food.

I didn't have nearly as much trouble with the other fish.

  • Genji-GlovesGenji-Gloves Registered User regular
The legend was the hardest, I had max level plus fish soup and it still was tricky until I just got lucky with its pattern.

Fire eel was also a massive pain to try and catch.

Did it in the end, just keep at it.

  • SteevLSteevL What can I do for you? Registered User regular
I lucked out with the fire eel while I was working on catching all the fish I hadn't caught yet. All that's left is the legend and an octopus.

I've only got 11 days of spring left, though. Really hoping for another rainy day.

  • MuddBuddMuddBudd Registered User regular
Well, got to my third spring. Hadn't spent a lot of time making friends with the townsfolk, but had a couple of them in the 5-6 range, and a bunch at 2-3, which seemed to be enough because I got the Iridium statue.

Got my fields setup with a ton of strawberries and other crops, got blueberries going in the greenhouse until I eventually find an ancient seed.

Going to put my game on hold for now though. Until some more stuff gets added in.

I had to alt-F4 out because I forgot my inventory was full when I tried to buy some omnigeodes from the oasis vendor. I couldn't stack them on anything, and i couldn't sell them back, and I couldn't exit my inventory to manage it. Totally stuck.

Almost done with Summer Year 1 and having a blast! Debating on where to put my chicken coop...I hate that it is stuck wherever I place it and can't move it. I want to put it somewhere, but there's a log there that needs a Steel Axe and mine is only copper. Oh, first-year farm problems! :) I guess it sounds like money won't be an issue later on, so I can put it somewhere and build another one later once that happens anyway.

Fishing is by far the best thing about this game - maybe because it is the only thing that requires a modicum of skill vs. simply managing time/resources? I don't know, but I'm enjoying the mini-game (except when I hook a legendary fish and have no chance to catch it with my current fishing skill!). Though I just bought an Iridium rod, so we'll see how that helps.

Love the game. Hopefully by the time I push on towards end game, there might be some added features too.

Yeah, I really like fishing too. I'm glad he seems adamant about not making it easier, especially since there are apparently mods out there that already do that.

I didn't build a coop or barn until year 2. By then I'd upgraded all my equipment to at least gold tools. I had cleared out enough space everywhere. I ended up putting my coop to the left of my greenhouse, and my barn a bit south of there.

    --

So, what's the point in raising slimes? I built the building to raise them, and I have the ring that makes me immune to them. I have a bunch of slimes in there, and I fill their troughs with water every day. The only thing I seem to get out of it is more slime which I can use to make more slime eggs which hatch into slimes which mean I can get even more slime to make more slime eggs which hatch into more slimes.

  • MrTLiciousMrTLicious Registered User regular
The point is to slaughter them for their drops. You can get purple slimes in there eventually if you breed correctly.

At this point you probably don't need it, but that's the idea.

  • SteevLSteevL What can I do for you? Registered User regular
Ah yeah, at this point there's no way I need what they could drop. Seems like he could do a little more with that stuff, but I'm not going to complain. The game came out remarkably well for how much content is already in there.

If you want to make sure you're happy with your building placement, this is the tool I used to plan it out exactly:

I'm really glad I did, too, because I ended up changing it twice from what I thought I wanted, once I saw it on the screen. Very helpful!

Purple slimes drop Iridium Ore. Arguably at a better rate than you can mine it. Not sure how well it would work farming wise because of the necessary doubling rate, but it would be consistent and quick.

Edit: Also, multiplayer needs to get here already. Having an entire farm to plant in and I can't till and sow it all in a day by myself.

regarding slime breeding, supposedly there's hidden stats on the slimes, so you could theoretically breed a line of slimes that do one damage and drop iridium super often.

It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

I just got my first rainy spring day in 20 days! I immediately gathered my fishing supplies, headed to the mountain lake, ate my +3 fishing food and went to work. Caught the Legend before 10 AM!

Almost accidentally turned it into fertilizer! I'm not sure if you actually can do that with the legendary fish, but I didn't want to find out the hard way. All that is left for me to catch now is an octopus.

I don't foresee myself going for the "cook everything" and "craft everything" achievements.

So, I'm almost at the point where I can get married and I have woo'd my prospective wife (and everyone else in town) with nothing but surplus mayonnaise...

It's a good thing this isn't a coronary disease simulator because I'd be widowed really young.

Other than that I love this game.

I was laughing about this earlier because I've done the same thing. And let's be honest, if you lived in a small town and there was a person known for giving out homemade mayonnaise, no one would like that person. Everyone would be seriously creeped out, and it's even possible law enforcement would get involved.

It should be made out of nothing but slime. After you've bred enough slimes inside it, the entire hutch becomes self-aware as a giant slime, which starts rolling east and you have to destroy before it katamaris all of Pelican Town.

Bonus objective to steer it north the long way around and back down by the river so that it only destroys Joja Mart before you quell it.

Also depends on how good the mayo is - My dad still lives in the small town I grew up in, and there's a dude who loves keeping bees and just gives out gallons of honey to basically anyone that will take it. Often the same thing with extra eggs, goats milk etc.

So about halfway through Winter 1, with about 30,000 gold. No greenhouse, and not super close to having one. Should I be planting trees outside? If so, should I do it now, or wait for Spring?

Fruit Trees outside are mostly for show. Once you have the greenhouse you can get fruit from them year round.

Though if you're lacking the fruit from the trees for the bundles to unlock the greenhouse, then yes.
