So, I'm almost at the point where I can get married and I have woo'd my prospective wife (and everyone else in town) with nothing but surplus mayonnaise...
It's a good thing this isn't a coronary disease simulator because I'd be widowed really young.
Other than that I love this game.
I was laughing about this earlier because I've done the same thing. And let's be honest, if you lived in a small town and there was a person known for giving out homemade mayonnaise, no one would like that person. Everyone would be seriously creeped out, and it's even possible law enforcement would get involved.
Well no
If you lived in a city that would be true. If you lived in a small town they would happily take it and proceed to bitch about it behind your back :P
Also depends on how good the mayo is - My dad still lives in the small town I grew up in, and there's a dude who loves keeping bees and just gives out gallons of honey to basically anyone that will take it. Often the same thing with extra eggs, goats milk etc.
Honey is great! Honey is an appropriate gift. Mayonnaise....look, I'm not saying it's always an inappropriate gift, but you'd better be fucking sure.
I grew up in a farming town and friends/family giving each other produce is extremely common. We get most of our corn, potatoes and beans from my grandmother. My mother gives our garden produce (especially tomatoes) to all her co-workers. You really want people to like you, start giving out fresh beef and venison.
Mayonnaise, though... not so much. Even if you could make it at home.

When I was a kid we had older neighbor that would go out on his boat and catch salmon (I think off the Willamette). If he caught anything, he'd then bring it to a cannery that also did smoking.
And then he'd give our family a pound of fresh wild smoked salmon. I loved that old man.

So about halfway through Winter 1, with about 30,000 gold. No greenhouse, and not super close to having one. Should I be planting trees outside? If so, should I do it now, or wait for Spring?
Fruit Trees outside are mostly for show. Once you have the greenhouse you can get fruit from them year round.
I wouldn't even worry about the greenhouse for that. I'd rather have the space for whatever crop I want year round. But then I have 5 of each fruit tree planted so that's 140 of each fruit every season they produce.
Nah, although those of us who already were growing trees on the tiles got to keep them.
Oh good. I just wish I had more of them now. I planted one of each type, except the one I accidentally destroyed. I don't know which one that is though, since they haven't all grown up.
I'm role-playing a cider orchard and am just going to go balls out on Apple trees for my main income in fall 2 (gonna plant them in spring). Just wish Apple wine was correctly called cider.

Also, I'm using a mod that makes the greenhouse much larger and has an entire room dedicated to trees. I finally finished clearcutting my farmland just because i can grow regular trees and a ton of fruit trees to meet my wood needs.
I'm not sure if I can agree with the mods to increase farmspace. The greenhouse in its tiny glory is still more than sufficient to grow a good pile of star fruits to turn into wine for mega profits, and still have enough space for random discretionary plantings. I find it more interesting to have a limit and working within that limit to do what you want to do.
But yeah, play however you like to play. That's part of the design intention with the game isn't it? Hence the lack of hard goals and a 'end game'.

I do wonder if he'll patch in the ability to upgrade the greenhouse in the future. Seems like it would be a useful feature.
I've actually not played the game in a few days at this point. I just don't feel like building relationships at this point. All I really have left to do is that and completing the museum.
At 95 hours played, it puts the game at my #6 most played game on Steam. Sandwiched between Spelunky and Mass Effect 2. Not bad. I'm sure it'll surpass Spelunky.

Well, Once i get to the point that im running the normal sized greenhouse full of ancient fruit, and have a million bucks, it just seems kinda pointless to farm outside anymore, so i got the bigger greenhouse, clearcut my yard, now im working on turning my farm into Japanese Gardens and if i get the urge to plant, i have the huge greenhouse.
Yeah its a mod. Easy enough to install tho.
Your just backing up and replacing a few of the files in your game directory. you can put it back if you dont like it.
Heres the link to the one i used (There are several).
All of these mods sound really great, though I think I like the cosmetic ones more than the ones that give you more space, etc. Like, I'm interested in the one that make the horsey look like Epona
I'm going to have to check out how to do these. Knowing me, I'll end up corrupting my save files somehow. Are they relatively easy to install and use?

First one is easy. its just a matter of replacing one of the files in your directory and its usually just the visual replacements....like make a backup copy of maru.xbs or whatever the extension is, then copy the new version in place, making sure your in the right location for the file (like dont try putting the maru picture replacement into the characters directory, it goes in the portraits..you will corrupt maru's animations if you do it wrong but just putting the original back fixes the mistake.
The other one is more complex. There is a front end to the game called Storm that hacks in mods at the data level as your playing them. It's not really difficult to setup, but you have to put the program in the right location, which may be the version of the program in your SteamApps directory, or the version in your /usr directory...it took me a while to get it to work, and i did that just for a simple mod that let me change the chance to get stormy weather. Most of the mods on that page tell you how to set them up properly.
The Greenhouse one above is the easy type. Your just replacing the files in your game directory with the ones from that zip you download from the thread.

First, I’d like to thank you all so much for playing Stardew Valley. The game has been more successful than I ever imagined, and I’m very grateful to everyone for granting me this amazing opportunity. I can’t say it enough– the community that’s formed around this game is incredible… full of kind, talented people who have given Stardew Valley a life of it’s own. It’s really cool. heart
The last couple of months have been pretty wild for me. I released seven patches… with bug fixes, adjustments, and some new content here and there. In addition, I’ve been keeping up with interviews, business stuff, social media platforms, and helping people who are having issues with the game. In short, I’ve been extremely busy.
Toward the end of April the launch buzz had cooled off enough that I could afford to take a short break. It’s been nice… I’ve actually played some other games for the first time in a long while, which was fun (Final Fantasy IX, Factorio, Age Of Empires II) . I feel refreshed, and I’m ready to get back to work!
First, here is a list of what’s planned for the future of Stardew Valley:
Version 1.1 — A substantial content update
Co-op Multiplayer
Localizing for non-english regions
Mac/Linux Ports
Console Ports
Merchandise
Now, there’s obviously a huge amount of work involved to achieve all this… and I am just one person. I know in the past I’ve been very adamant about doing everything myself… and I still am, when it comes to game design and content. However, I’ve decided to seek outside help for some of the more technical things listed above. More specifically, I’ve accepted an offer from Chucklefish in which they will handle the porting, localization, and the technical side of multiplayer. This will allow me to focus on creating new game content for version 1.1, which I will continue to do entirely on my own.
This should result in faster overall development and reduced workload for me, while preserving my artistic control over Stardew Valley. I think it will be beneficial for everyone.
There’s no official timetable for any of this yet… Mainly I just want to let you all know that multiplayer, porting and localization are actively being worked on.
In the meantime, I’d like to give a little rundown of some things I’m planning for version 1.1:
More late-game content
New farm buildings
New crops
New artisan goods
New advanced farming/producing mechanics
Shane and Emily will be marriage candidates. They will also have more events and dialogue as a result.
More marriage content for all spouses
More events for the non-marriage NPC’s
Improvements/Additions to mining and combat
Ability to move buildings and other convenience features
More bug fixes
More secrets
More small, fun touches to the world
(note: anything in this list is subject to change)
Well, that’s all for now. Again, thanks for all your support and thanks for reading!
Oh well. Hopefully in further incarnations it'll have more going on there.
Funny story: I got bored post-renovation so I decided to start a new dude. I like fishing more than farming, and it's a decent source of money if you're good at the minigame, so I got my bamboo rod on day 2 and started casting into the beach.
I had been on Fishing Skill 10 with an Iridium rod, bait, and a boxful of lures for forever, so I'd forgotten how small your fishing bar is when you first start out and how much tougher it is in the early going. It's almost like a different minigame. I'd been fishing for a while and ended up getting one that kept getting away from me, but never so much that the bar crashed out. I probably chased after it for 2 or 3 real-time minutes and even picked up a treasure in the process.
Haul it out of the water and what had I been reeling in this whole time?
I just finished the community center on my file a few days ago... is it basically just an empty building nobody ever goes to after the cutscene?
I've seen Penny and the mayor visit it on occasion, but yeah, not much goes on in there that I know of.
Maru and Clint also visit, the children's room and the furnace respectively. I've also seen the ladies of the aerobics club gathered in there, but not for aerobics.

I think but have no good confirmation that villagers visit it more often in the winter. That's when I mostly saw them inside it.

A 1-inch sardine. Seriously.
Yeah, that was exactly my first experience catching a fish.
I was thinking of starting a challenge run while we wait for the next big patch. I did some searching around and didn't see any ideas that were either a) challenging or b) any fun.
except this one:
No Seeds Challenge
- don't buy seeds from anyone. ever.
- it's ok to get seeds from that seed doohickey or bundles or trash cans or whatever. just don't buy 'em.
- rebuild the community center.
what do you guys think? got any other challenge idears?

I'm not sure that challenge is even possible, can wild seeds get you plants that need a trellis?
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

Ah, that's right. I think the traveling merchant sells them occasionally. Random chance, obviously, and more tedious than actually challenging, but it is technically possible.
Yeah, I foresee this challenge requiring a lot of visits to the traveling vendor for all the crop bundles. Also i'm not sure if it's going to be easier to get the seed machine from the bundle or from leveling the farming skill.

I wonder if SDV will show up as an indie game title during the ms or sony conferences.
So my no-buying-seeds challenge is going at a pretty good clip. Money's tight, but I'm still making (slightly better?) progress in the first month than on my first (non-challenge) attempt. Just got basic coop and an under-construction barn.
Also I wound up doing a lot of fishing. Getting good at fishing pays off when you start a new game.
It's kinda surprising how much slack you have when you don't pay for seeds and watering can upgrades. Sadly, I was only able to complete 1 whole bundle in the first month. I'm hoping for better luck with the traveling shop.
I've made some more progress on my challenge run. Another month past and i have 10 (!) bundles out of the way. Sadly none of the crop bundles are complete.
I've had a bit of luck with the traveling shop. She sold me a poppy flower(which i can't grow at all) and a rabbit's foot. The problem I'm having now is I've planted 25+ mixed seeds and didn't get a single tomato OR a blueberry. This leads me to believe the table for random mixed seeds is smaller than implied... though I may have just had terrible rng rolls.
Also I've noticed it's possible for townsfolk to mail you produce if they like you. I'm not sure how easy it is to game that to my advantage.

Oh man, I'm a sucker for poster maps like that. I've got Bill Mudron's renditions of maps from The Legend of Zelda and Castlevania and could not be happier with them.
Also, my wife and I rented a garden plot in real life and I can confirm that this shit is way harder than Stardew Valley. I never really grasped how much of a pain in the ass weeds are until recently.
