SotFS play through continues, wherein I spend four hours in Iron Keep because the captains refuse to drop a hat.
(I got the Armor off the second captain I killed, and made the mistake of assuming that the hard part was over.)
By the time it finally showed up, there wasn't much respawning AND I'd passed 1 million soul memory so I went and opened up the Drangleic bonfire even though I only had two boss souls.
I really didn't mind the revamped Iron Keep, though I appreciate being warned in advance to bring a bow and a ton of arrows.
Then I went and killed The Rotten, as an aside the Gutter is still awful but at least it looked pretty once I got most of the torches lit, and the worms in Black Gulch were awfully generous with the chunks so now all of my armor is at +7.
Absolutely in love with the Drangleic sword move set. First Souls greatsword I've felt comfortable with and I didn't use it in my last play through because you get it really early and it has pretty heavy stat requirements.
Trying not to think about the Shrine of Amana coming up soon. La la la it isn't real la la la.
i was rolling in alonne armour by the time i'd finished that place, mostly because i wanted a blacksteel katana and RNGeesus was mocking me. i've skipped gulch and gutter while i try and power my way to ornifex for a curved GS, will back track one i've established whether it'll save my current build.
Hah! I had three katanas before I finally got the captain helm. RNGesus indeed.
Tempted to put main game progression aside and do the DLCs as I've never done them before. Those are from the snakey statues behind Old Iron King / The Rotten and in the Shine of Winter, right?
I depopulated Iron Keep looking for Captain armor, never got it. Will need asthetics or the champions covenant to get it now. Drake armor is doing me just fine though.
I attempted Sunken DLC @ SL112, having trouble putting enough dps in to one of the bosses, I'll be back soon.
I attempted Frozen area DLC @ SL118, got frustrated at something, but got the symbol of avarice, which was my main reason for going, so i'll be back.
Haven't gone to last area yet, but iirc, I was butting my head up against that area when I quit the game the first time many yrs ago. Sooooon.
In other news, got finished with Dragon Aerie, and dragon castle/keep/house of fucking 270 degree weapon arc and monster tracking huge knights. After my 4th death I just paid a visit to Gavlan and he's now 58k souls richer, I have 999 poison arrows and I revenge depopulated the place.
Managed to find my copy of Demon's Souls, buried behind a bunch of games and DVDs. Started it up and got all the way past Phalanx without dying.
I remember this being incredibly hard the first time and dying continuously. Two enemies at a time was a huge obstacle. This time I just mowed through everything without much difficulty. Knowing to pick Royalty this time might have helped, of course.
Now I just need to remember where all I can run around and grab free stuff. I seem to remember 4-1 has something good?
Demons souls stuff....
4-1 has the magic falchion up on the hill with the black katana skeleton. You bait his leaping double swipe, roll around it, and run to the falchion and bail. The demon from the tutorial is guarding the Uchi if you want a katana. Even a mild investment of 14 in INT will see nice returns on the sword until you find and upgrade something better.
2-2 has a fire longsword. It's reasonably well hidden though, you'll need to know where it is going in.
5-2 has the moonlight god-it's-just-amazing great sword. Pump faith, wield sword, win game. Other than evac, miracles aren't great in this game. But blessed weapons (for when you're not rocking the MGS) will give you hp regen and if you want a faith build. MGS and blessed Lucerne are a decent duo.
Be aware that crystal lizards only spawn a few times before they're gone forever. 1 spawn +1 spawn for every boss you've killed in that world. You can kill the same lizard multiple times unlike in Dark souls games, but if you miss the lizard cause it got away, then that's one chance missed. Your most important lizards for RARE stones are 3-2 and 3-3 for moonstone and 4-end boss arena for darklight stone. With that being said, if you don't intend on getting trophy or your don't need moon/dark stone for your chosen weapon path, then they aren't that big a deal. If you get a pure bladestone with less than 3 hrs of farming, we can't be friends anymore (seriously fuck bladestone and fuck moonstone).
Leave world 5 til later, unless you really really want the MGS. And if you want the MGS, make sure you get the black leather stuff from 3-1 for poison resist.
A little more in depth and progression, ignore if you want to look around:
The second you kill phlanax, go get your falchion, farm enough souls in 4-1 to get around 200 arrows. Go back to 1-2 and spend the next 20 mins of your life firing arrows in the red dragons face as he flies around 1 arrow per pass, going for more is a waste of arrows. Eat red dragon soul, level up, go kill tower knight at the end of 1-2. Level up, go kill armored spider in 2-1, level up, kill 4-1 boss, 3-1 boss. The falchion works wonders against them all. Go get your fire longsword from 2-2 and consider 5-1, die about 40 times and then go back to 3-2, 2-2 (use falchion for boss of 2-2). You'll be on your way to finishing demons in no time :P
@Dr. Chaos It may be sort of gauche but you're coming up on what I feel is the one genuinely weak segment of Dark Souls. In my opinion, it's better to tackle this area at your earliest convenience so that you can finish out the game by playing through better areas
If you want, it'd be pretty easy to point you in the direction of the less-good times so you can finish out with the stronger areas

I remember that the door/gate at the very beginning of 1-1, that leads to the executioner, should have opened now that I beat the boss. Or do I have to beat the second boss, too? I thought it was very early. I'm not really worried about maxing out weapons or getting trophies, so I'll just grab what lizards I can and not stress.
I've already got a bow and my 200 arrows, I was planning to take down the dragon next time I play. Then I'll probably grind skeletons for a few more levels, I think. I remember the MGS being in 5-1 and it being complicated to get, but not where exactly or how...I'll have to look it up.

Goddammit, game.
It caught one of the curves near the bottom but thats still bullshit.
did black gulch last night, f that place and its endless poison statues. also forgot to summon lucatiel for the rotten, leaving me 2/3 for her quest. this leaves straight murdering her for her stuff if she actually shows up again or using an ascetic.
gonna have to NG+ smelter anyway so i can have another shot at pursuer for the RoB +1, but is suspect that is a bad idea for her boss fight. what sort of SL am i gonna need to not get creamed there regardless?
Black Gulch was truly fucking awful because it's just fucking annoying and boring. It's just an endless clearing of statues to kill a few invaders and access the other bonfire so you can do the like 3 things in the zone that actually mean anything. None of it is actually interesting and there's no real skill to it so it's just a waste of your fucking time.

Don't forget that if you're on SotFS, you can clear all the way to the phantom summon for Old Iron King and walk her back to the Smelter Demon fog gate, which helps a ton.

Haha, I'm watching SBFP Demon's in my downtime at work, it's actually on the tab to the left of this one :P
Enjoy all 4-1 has to offer, but do the following if you don't want:
Next time you're in 4-1. Looking at the gate with the 2 skeleton archers on top of it, off to the right you can see an item on the other side of some rubble, at the bottom of the tower on the right. But you can't access it. Go to the top of the gate, where you kill the skeleton archers that are near the front. Walk over to the 2nd tower, where you get the copper key. From the very top, looking out over where the item that you couldn't access is, roll off the ledge towards the item you can't see now. Enjoy. Horrible video showing what I just tried to.
Depending on online tendency you may be able to open 1-1 gate right now, if not, kill the dragon and you'll be able to. Otherwise, kill the iron giant boss guy and THEN try . Typically if you're playing online though, you should only need to kill 1 or 2 bosses in any world to be PWWT.
The faith weapon in 5-1 is a spear, Istarel or something, and it's annoying AF to get to, a decent enough spear if spears are your thing. You need PWWT, and it's guarded by a bunch of the large troll guys, which are the real bosses of world 5. MGS is guarded by the slugs mid 5-2, and you can get to it sorta easy.
Magic is hilariously busted in this game, you're right, and if you have the falchion, or are going a magic build, then breezing through world 2 may be your thing Speed run down to the mercury rapier or estoc in 3-1 and then bounce back over to world 2 and have a good time. Falchion/magic for fat officials, rapier/estoc for miners (they take bonus damage from piercing).
Is Lost Izalith looked down upon because of the lava?
Not finding it that bad actually.
I liked the big dinoesque guys, I thought they were a pretty cool design. The boss of the zone gets a lot of flack because it's very weird and you can get worked over on pure randomness with it.

DS2 update:
Last night I managed to beat: Elana, the Squalid Queen (5th attempt of the night) - stupid multi fights. Sinh, the Slumbering Dragon (2nd attempt) - was 1 hit away on first attempt and got greedy tried for the kill instead of playing safe) The 3 Adventurers (7 attempts!!!) - I got rolled the first time, blitzed before I knew what was happening. 2nd - 6th time only managed to kill the archer, 7th time was the one where I managed to get the swordsman down, and then once it was 1 on 1, guy in havels set was easy. God damn multi fights. Burnt Ivory King (2nd attempt) - Same thing as with Sinh, got greedy, should have played it safe. Now to do the Burnt Ivory King another bunch of times for the Loyce souls. Wonder how many people are still running them for me to sunbro along to.
Off to kill the 2 cats tonight and start bashing my head against the Crown of the Old Iron King. Or bonfire intensity 2 and revisit all the bosses that drop new things on those intensities.
Is Lost Izalith looked down upon because of the lava?
Not finding it that bad actually.
Enemies are just kind of plopped around haphazardly and frequently in random clumps with no real thought or care given to their interaction with the level design. The statue enemies are basically nothing, like I've taken on over a dozen at once and come out on top with no damage. Then it just re-uses assets like crazy. Old bosses are generic enemies, the zombie dragon's lower half from the painted world is inexplicably an enemy type here, and the Asylum Demon makes his third return as the Demon Firesage.
It feels like they kind of ran out of time while designing and refining this area and just left in placeholder stuff.
So I just sacrificed myself to give the crummy status quo more time on the clock. Did the Chosen Undead know he was going to die by doing all this?
Damn, if I had known about that, the deception (apparently there is no Gwynivere and Anor Londo is actually dark) and the other stuff you can do with the lordvessel, I would have probably sided with the wraiths (never found/came across them though).

Well, I was thinking of it more from a purely selfish point of view and the idea of feelings of betrayal superceding my view of a bigger picture (which tends to happen a lot in video games, it seems).
Both options are terribly depressing and fucked up but that one in particular seems like it could end with me sitting atop a throne made out of skulls and drinking humanity out of a chalice which could be fairly entertaining.

If I understand it correctly, the proper choice is meant to be the wraiths. You want to usher in the era of dark, and be done with era of fire. You're a good guy in the sense that you're ending the overly long era of fire to get the balance back in order by bringing in the dark.

All well and good, except
Once you make your choice, you start off once again in your cell, sure with everything you had last time around, but you're still repeating the same story. Now, while I know some folks would say that's only a storytelling conceit, I choose to read it that the actual "soul" of the Chosen Undead is trapped in a time loop, due to make one of two of the same forked path decisions again and again, without end, never triumphing, always beyond the grasp of victory or defeat. Much like the rest of the game itself, really.
I make art things! deviantART:Kalnaur ::: Origin: Kalnaur ::: UPlay: Kalnaur
That everything just keeps repeating over and over. Down to you finding an empty house that you decide to use as your 'base' that has a skeleton in the basement. And when you go to NG+ it has two skeletons...and then three...

The game pretty clearly indicates from the way New Londo went that the path of the darkwraiths is a pit of fucking horrors.
I really don't think there is supposed to be a good ending. Both endings are melancholy and tragic. You either sacrifice yourself to let the age of fire limp on a little further or you flip it the bird and plunge the world into a dark world of terror but hey, at least it's a kind of freedom.

The wraiths are found in the hole you fought the four kings in, but only if you haven't already placed the lordvessel.

In addition,
siding with the wraiths is not bringing on the "Age of Dark" as much as it would be the "Age of the Abyss", which is different. I get the feeling the Age of Dark, the Age of Man, was poisoned by the kindling of the First Flame. That seems to be the reason for all the undead, the reason time isn't flowing correctly, the "Lords" (i.e. Gods) fucked up the chances of an age for Man. And then the evil serpent seems to have fostered the birth of Manus, and the creation of the Abyss. The wild, dark humanity of the Abyss seems to be a replacement for the fouled Age of Man in the wake of the Kindling.

Wasn't everything archtrees and dragons before the Age of Fire started? My understanding of things was that the darksign was starting to crop up everywhere, so Gwyn rekindled the First Flame in an attempt to stave off whatever was coming.

gonna have to NG+ smelter anyway so i can have another shot at pursuer for the RoB +1, but is suspect that is a bad idea for her boss fight. what sort of SL am i gonna need to not get creamed there regardless?
Don't forget that if you're on SotFS, you can clear all the way to the phantom summon for Old Iron King and walk her back to the Smelter Demon fog gate, which helps a ton.
Not finding it that bad actually.
Haha, I'm watching SBFP Demon's in my downtime at work, it's actually on the tab to the left of this one :P
Enjoy all 4-1 has to offer, but do the following if you don't want:
Depending on online tendency you may be able to open 1-1 gate right now, if not, kill the dragon and you'll be able to. Otherwise, kill the iron giant boss guy and THEN try
Magic is hilariously busted in this game, you're right, and if you have the falchion, or are going a magic build, then breezing through world 2 may be your thing
I liked the big dinoesque guys, I thought they were a pretty cool design. The boss of the zone gets a lot of flack because it's very weird and you can get worked over on pure randomness with it.
It was also heavily patched apparently.
Tell me all about it after BoC kills you for the 12th time due to bad jumps, or swipes you over the edge.
Last night I managed to beat:
Elana, the Squalid Queen (5th attempt of the night) - stupid multi fights.
Sinh, the Slumbering Dragon (2nd attempt) - was 1 hit away on first attempt and got greedy tried for the kill instead of playing safe)
The 3 Adventurers (7 attempts!!!) - I got rolled the first time, blitzed before I knew what was happening.
Not sure what they were thinking with that one.
The latter feels huge and empty in a really odd way even with the Hydra encounter.
The beast has been slain.
Alright then. Time to go hunt down those lore videos.
I can't imagine how they could have worked that in, which is why it was cut I suppose. Too bad, because it's rad.
Damn, if I had known about that, the deception (apparently there is no Gwynivere and Anor Londo is actually dark) and the other stuff you can do with the lordvessel, I would have probably sided with the wraiths (never found/came across them though).
Both options are terribly depressing and fucked up but that one in particular seems like it could end with me sitting atop a throne made out of skulls and drinking humanity out of a chalice which could be fairly entertaining.
All well and good, except
I really don't think there is supposed to be a good ending. Both endings are melancholy and tragic. You either sacrifice yourself to let the age of fire limp on a little further or you flip it the bird and plunge the world into a dark world of terror but hey, at least it's a kind of freedom.
