The weekend is the end of the week, Monday is the start of the work week
It makes way more sense to have Sunday end the week, the weekend, and have Monday start it off.

Why? You start the week off with relaxation and then finish with work. I like that concept better than working in the beginning and only getting to relax at the end.
Tuesday sounds like twosday, so it's the second day.
Wednesday starts with "wed", aka the wedding of the new holy trinity of Christ, Yahweh and The Holy Church when Jesus returns. Three individuals, so it is the third day.
Thursday was originally Thor's Day. Thor rhymes with four. It is the fourth day.
