I take back everything I said about competitive being fun and well balanced. Multiple 5v6 games tonight, full 6 man premades in the solo queue, teams so bad they they cant leave their initial spawn point, etc.
I think I'm done with competitive solo. It's just not worth the frustration.
PC, because the game is not in beta on PS4 and thus has a playerbase of 0 right now.
In addition, there are a few differences in how the game functions on PS4 and controls with a controller, specifically in the turn rate of heroes having to be modified for the D-pad by being sped up.
Blizzard is also a PC developer making their first forays into the console scene still; their only real previous game on consoles was Diablo 3. So ironing out Overwatch's above considerations for consoles while getting it more exposure and competing with other more established shooters is going to be a consideration for the success of Overwatch on that platform.
I really really really hope having Blizzard making this game means it will have a long lifespan. The fact that modern FPS games have gone over almost entirely to being the same game rehashed every year or two has largely killed the genre for me, because I think it's stupid to buy the game and then also have to buy all the content packs to keep up with a playerbase, eventually resulting in something that eats up over a hundred bucks only to get replaced in 18-24 months.
Titanfall was the last FPS I played with any regularity, and it being Origin-exlusive killed that playerbase within a few months. Really hope Overwatch ends up being something that runs 5-10 years instead.

Is there ever going to be a way to play this without either getting lucky or blindly buying this game?

There will be an open beta May 5-9.
Awesome, that is exactly what I wanted.

If I do not really enjoy playing League of Legends right now, would I enjoy playing this? After reading some of the comments here it seems like it will be another MOBA style game that basically means I cannot play it without friends.

I only mildy enjoyed TF2 and ended up quitting pretty quickly.
Is there a demo or trial I can do for this already or will one probably be available when it releases? I am not sure I want to drop money on this just yet. It looks cool but I can see myself not liking the playstyle of this game.

If you didn't like TF2 much then I don't think you'll enjoy this game. But who knows, watch some Twitch streams or something to see if it appeals to you. It does have a lot of very unique characters, so anybody who enjoys shooters should be able to find at least one or two that resonates with them.
man i love it when something clicks in your brain for specific character mechanics
like roadhog's combo
today i learned to speed boost ult as Lucio into control points. Makes sense, since healing is not really needed during the duration of the ult

I have no idea why, but while TF2 did nothing for me, I loved Overwatch when I played in the stress test weekend.
I used to love TF2 but I've soured on the game for the most part. I'm hoping Overwatch can fill the void it left in my heart.

I really do think Overwatch will shine more as a game when it has a lot more players. Right now it's just a whole lot of the same beta people and try hard teams that often ruin the experience in short succession, even in quick play mode.
Having gotten good with a few heroes and found genuine enjoyment and great comeback plays however despite the above really makes the game feel like it's still worth my time and not really akin to a MOBA where almost the entire experience usually ends up being frustrating.

A bigger player pool will be huge. Right now the matchmaker is doing its best to put these full matches together, but you end up seeing the same people constantly.

This is exactly me. I think for me it is probably the personality. The maps have personality and the characters have personality. I liked playing as Tracer less because I like Tracer's mechanics and more because I like Tracer.

Well, it certainly seems wrong to say TF2 lacks personality (I love basically all of the TF2 characters as characters more than any of the overwatch ones now), but it is true that the overwatch maps do have a lot more personality to them since they all have their own distinct art rather than TF2 have a set of themes and props every map is crafted out of until someone decides to take the plunge and model an entirely new theme (which happens like, once every two or three years).
The maps are so, so good in style and ambiance. God I love the maps.

I finally pre-ordered the standard edition of Overwatch today; it's sold me enough now that I feel confident I'll continue to enjoy it going forward and want to see where it goes, and I want to enjoy it with PA peeps at my side where I can.
I would say skip the Origin edition unless you play a lot of other Blizzard games as the rewards for those games may be more worthwhile then the skins you get in Overwatch itself, as I am of the opinion that the skins you earn via loot crates and the in game currency are much better then most of those skins.
If I could simply buy the Slipstream Tracer solo I would, but I don't much care for the rest of the bonuses and only play Hearthstone aside from this in terms of Blizzard games.

I've had the PC version pre-ordered for a while, and I'm going to pre-order for a console, I just haven't decided which, yet.

Agreed, but I'd add Strike Commander Morrison and even Blackwatch Reyes (though both of Reaper's loot-drop skins are equally as good if not slightly better) are also amaze-balls. Overgrown Bastion and Security Chief Pharrah are kinda meh.
Hell, I think Strike Commander Morrison is one of the best skins in the game.
I'm going to order the standard edition too. While the skins are cool they're for characters I don't play, and all the extra stuff are for games I also don't play (with the exception of Diablo 3). Even if I did want the skins they aren't worth $20 to me.
A few new skins and an informational update to how competitive mode works.
Competitive is still a total shit show as a solo queue. 3/5 games tonight were 5v6, playing defense with three snipers, zero communication. I thought I'd try quick play but it's more of the same. I think it's time to take a break again for a few weeks.
next level boop: boop as Winston, Reinhardt, Zarya, D.VA, Pharah, Junkrat
honorable mention: Roadhog hook into pits, icewall deny jumps as Mei
Also, this was added today:
Curved
Swords
and garter belt (stupid sexy genji)
Not a big fan of the goggles, same with that Zarya skin. Waiting for the recolor...
currently in a competitive game that loaded 3v3, and our third guy dropped
lol blizz
this is ouch after two complete blast losses before this game
It seems like competitive isn't worth the time unless you have a decent premade. At least, until the full game is out and there's a larger player pool.
It's super unlikely this game just dies in a year. Blizzard doesn't just "let games die" and will bend over backwards to improve it.
Look at Diablo 3 and how criticized it was, and then look at the lengths Blizzard went to in order to turn things around. They didn't have to do this: Diablo 3 still sold a shitton and they could have written the game off and rested on the fat stacks of cash it brought in. Shit, dead games like Warcraft 3 are still getting minor patches to fix things, so if you are worried about a game's longevity then Blizzard is one of the safest bets out there.
