Is there any difference between the fat and the lite version of DS? Could I just buy the fat one for less and have the same exact experience (albeit with an additional arm workout)? Also, is there a good place to buy DS stuff online for less than I would pay at say best buy?
I'm considering buying several of these for some kids I know (and myself obviously) so cost is an issue. Thanks!
Sorry if this belongs elsewhere, or is considered spam... I'll delete it if that is possible once I have my answer.
EDIT: Also, the search function doesn't seem to work very well, does anybody have any links to any of the "What ds games should I buy" threads? I don't want to make another one since I've seen them go by before but I can't find them for the life of me...
The old DS can't be played at all in many conditions because the glare makes the screen impossible to see. The Lite is so, so much better. Even under conditions in which you could play either one, I have a much better experience with my Lite than I ever did with my old DS. The difference in size is definitely not the point of buying a Lite; it's all about the beautiful screen.
Game Boy Color games won't work on any version of the DS. It can only play GBA games and DS games, unless someone's invented an adapter that I never heard about.

Eh, the phat DS isn't so bad. I do prefer the DS Lite, but the older model still has it's advantages. One, as someone else said, GBA carts don't stick out the bottom of it. Also, I actually prefer the feel of the buttons and D-Pad on the old model slightly over the new model.
To answer the OP's original question though, I'm not even sure if you can find the old-style DS anywhere new now. And even if you could, I'm pretty sure they're the same price as the DS Lite.
Has a larger stylus and a slightly more durable touch screen
The D-Pad is improved (at least I think it is)
Better battery life by at least a couple hours (but depends on brightness setting)
The biggest difference I noticed was playing certain games like Animal Crossing. Everything was so much brighter and the game popped a lot more visually when I made the switch to the DS Lite. That right there adds a lot of value to any game you play.
The only problem I have with my Lite is that my hands are apparently mutant sized. I'm not saying I could destroy the world or anything with them, but my hands get very fatigued being cramped around the square-Lite.
Also, can I say that that was the most useful set of reviews I have ever seen.
Heheh. Funny and informative!
Well, seriously. He covered the shit that most people actually give a damn about, rather than most console reviews that just spit out a bunch of hardware and launch titles.

True.
The d-pad has a more analog and soft feel on the Lite (this is the same for all Lite buttons) . It's also the same d-pad as on the Wii remote.
The original DS has "clicking" buttons, like the buttons on a cellphone.
I as well recommend the DS Lite. You can actually see what you're playing.
Beyond all of my expectations. I take the train every morning and evening, and I haven't found a glare that the Lite doesn't completely obliterate. It really is amazing.
This is the only (ONLY!) time I am glad I got a Bestbuy coverage plan. First I need to be sure a given Bestbuy does NOT have any Phats in stock and then I will find an excuse to need a replacement. I'M COMING FOR YOU DS LITE!!!!

The additional brightness doesn't seem all that useful when you hear it or read about it, but visually, once you get used to it it's nigh impossible to go back. It's like trying to go back to the old-style SPs after using anything after them.
The colors are so much more vibrant, it's fantastic. When I got my Lite I went back and replayed so many older games and noticed things that I never saw before. Metroid Prime: Hunters is actually playable because you can see what you're doing!

Not only that, but try going back to an old model SP. (not the ones with the newer, brighter screen) You wonder how we ever got along in 2003. The Lite is on par with the newer model GBA SP and the Micro, and they all outshine the PSP, which while glorious can't quite cut through the light of that accursed sun.
Hilariously enough, the absolute best system to play in the full light of the sun is the original GBA. Fucker was designed for that.
How does the friend code stuff work? Could someone please give me a brief run down on what this is all about. I'm playing ffIII and want to unlock the onion knight. any help would be cool. Thanks

Haven't done anything online with FF III, but here is the general idea.
1. Find your friend code.
2. Find someone else willing to trade friend codes
3. Give them your friend code.
4. Enter in their friend code.
5. Make with the online.
6. Write a letter or whatever. Happy fun times.

You need to be in game to do this? As opposed to Wii where you do it in the sytem menu.

Yeah, there are no system codes or internet applications on the system firmware. Everything is game-specific. If you didn't know this already, every game has its own separate code, so your code for one game will be different from your code in another game, and friends added in one game will no longer be there on another. Some people claim Nintendo did this because there is not enough system memory (or indeed any system memory at all) to hold the lists, but c'mon, the lists could have been stored online like every chat program ever does with its buddy lists. Nintendo made the online system this way by design, love it or leave it.

Unless you consider screen brightness "performance."
Phat = sexy grey, and GBA carts don't stick out to wazoo when in the system.

No, but you couldn't play them on the original DS either.

Nintendo usually prices it's redesigns at the same price as the original, yes.
And the Lite is a better pick for brightness alone.
- Lighter and more comfortable to hold
- Much brighter screen and adjustable brightness
- Looks more appealing
- Has a larger stylus and a slightly more durable touch screen
- The D-Pad is improved (at least I think it is)
- Better battery life by at least a couple hours (but depends on brightness setting)

Lite > Phat in many ways. Unless you're building a house out of DS systems.
Watch his Saint's Row video. It's awesome.

I really like the size and looks. And the screen is ridiculously bright. Bigger stylus too.
Heheh. Funny and informative!
Thanks for the advice guys

HOW!? I have a ds phat and a psp and have wanted to trade in both for a lite and thought even that wouldn't cover it. Am I mistaken?
You can't do a one for one hardware swap. If you could, we'd probably be looking at a slightly less wealthy Nintendo.

No, it saves to the cart. Nintendo isn't using their portable to sell some proprietary memory format, like some other company.
