OP, get Mario Kart, especially if you're buying multiple DS's. Everybody needs the Mario Kart.

I'm getting it soon. I just bought a DS, when do I set it up to work with my wireless router? I don't see any settings or anything in the booklets. I need to set it to connect and give it the password etc...

Its done through the actual game when you pick it up so don't worry about it yet.

Ah nice. You guys are awfully helpful. Thanks. I just bought the pokemon diamond and a DS to test it out. Eventually I'm going to buy a couple more (when I go back home) for the kids that I sort of adopted as siblings and we can all fight. I need a head start though...

    ha

    Mario cart looks awesome.

Any game that is wifi enabled will have an option to set up WFC settings. Once you set them up for one game, it's stored with the system.

Also, WFC info is unique to system + game, so if you plug the game into a different system, it could screw up things if you try to go online.

Edit: Diamond is a GREAT game to get started online with. Start a game, save it, and then reboot to the opening menu. You should see a "Nintendo WFC settings" option at the bottom of the screen. That's what you would use. I don't think Diamond came with a WFC setup manual, however. It's fairly straightforward though, and of course we'll help you. =)

From experience my favorite games have been the Castlevania games, Advance Wars, Animal Crossing, and New Super Mario Bros. Mario Kart is also pretty great and I have yet to get in on the Pokemon craze but I will certainly be doing that eventually.

Just to be clear - if you're playing Mario Kart or whatever in the same room as other DS's the DS's just talk to each other directly. If you want to play over the net then just about any vanilla wireless router will (so far as I know) work, and it's incredibly easy. The only potential PITA is that the DS isn't compatible with all wireless security protocols so you might have to switch/disable whatever protection you're using (if any) - or just leach of a neighbor with an unsecured network.

Oh, and if you're in the same room as the others, you only need one copy of MK to play a pretty good selection of basic tracks (you get more if everybody has a copy, but it's not bad with the default); the other DS's will spend a few minutes downloading game data then you're good to go. Unsure if this works over the 'net, but I'm sure somebody here can answer that if it's an issue.

Online requires a card per DS -- I've never heard of any game that does otherwise.

Yeah but he meant playing with other friends in the room not online.

Also, friend codes, if you have friends in close proximity real life and play Wifi matches with them (not over the internet) the friend codes get traded automatically for many games (or with one button press) so that there is no need to mess with trading numbers.

You may be still able to get a phat one at a store that sell consoles but not a lot of them.. ie Loblaws in Canada.. most people dont even know than Loblaws have a videogame section so their sales are very low, and the one in my town have like 50 DS lite and 10 phat in stock. The difference in price is minimal tough. The Lite are 147.77 CDN and the phat goes for 139.98

I got a Lite this weekend and I gotta say i'm very impressed by that handheld. I wonder how they managed to make it all fit in such a small space...

BYW what do you people use to clean your screens?

i used a lens cleaning cloth when i had my DSphat, then i got a Lite and Hori screen protectors, wich come with a cleaning cloth, so now i use that one.

BTW im impressed by the Hori protectors, the motherfuckers are in pristine condition, even after weeks of furious EBA sessions.

EBA did a number on my touch screen. But that's what EB warranty's are for, right?

The Phat has really crappy screens, to the point of being game-breaking. Stay away from it. It's even worse with newer games, which seem to be made with the glorious and wonderful screen on the Lite in mind.

Seriously, I hate my old Phat (which I sold to my mother-in-law). It's utterly crap compared to the Lite.

The only, single, sole thing it does better is sound. The speakers are louder. But then again, you can and should use headphones, so it's a moot point.

Which games are unplayable? I've had a phat DS for over a year and every game I've played has looked wonderful.

You only think they look wonderful because you don't have a Lite.

If you only ate crap all your life, you'd think crap is delicious :)

seriously, MPH is more like Metroid Prime Doom3 without the flash light, NSM loses 75% of it's visual appeal, Ouendan is just drab, mario kart is fuzzy, contact is a mess and Hotel dusk is blurry.

Every single game looks 10x better on the new screen. it's not just brighter, it also has better colors.

DSLite is fucking amazing, if not just for the screen, but also for the size, shape, style, stylus, and battery life as well... It really does make every game much easier to see and much more vivid. DS and GBA games at that.

My point is that that's not game-breaking. I've yet to come across a game I couldn't play on my DS. It may not look quite as nice, but to call it game-breaking is at the very least an overstatement and at most hyperbolic.

    Not really.
I just can't play MPH on the Phat anymore.

It breaks the game to me.

I'd rather not play DS games than play them on a Phat.

We have a Phat and a Lite as I haven't been able to convince my wife to upgrade (to be fair she doesn't play it that much, she's been more into the Wii lately). I have a hard time going back to her Phat, especially in any type of sunlight, but after about 10 minutes I forget about the difference.

Truthfully, the tiny stylus causes me more issues than the screen.
